It was a Sunday morning. Lori was busy writing in her book. Marilyn was drinking cofe and I was reading a newspaper. Suddenly, Lori looked up and asked, "Why are there more pictures of Lisa than there are of1?" Lisa is our older daughter.
I stared back, not understanding the2. Lori left the room. I looked at Marilyn, "Are there more pictures of Lisa than of Lori?"
"I've never3them. I don't know, " replied Marilyn.
"But4would Lori ask such a question?" I asked. After a few minutes of thought Marilyn said, "When Lisa was born, you were taking photos. You hardly went5without a camera. When Lori was born, videos became6. You used a video camera to record nearly everything in our life. There must be hundreds of videos of Lori in the computer that Lori has7seen or doesn't remember. "
Late that night, when we were alone, I tuned on the computer and found the8about Lori.
"What are you going to do?" Marilyn asked.
"Her birthday is coming, " I said "Let's make an album for her as a gift. I don't know if the album will answer her question, but at least she'll know that we9enough to find her an answer. "
Over the next few days, we secretly10all the videos. We watched and selected until we were11. Marilyn had them made into photos. When the photos were retuned, we placed them into an album.
When we looked at the album, all the sweet memories came12. We hoped it showed how13she was to us.
On June 7, when passing Lori's room to leave for work. I opened the door and slipped the album inside. Attached to it was a birthday card with a note14why her mother and I had put the album together.
It was about eight o'clock when my office telephone rang. I picked up the receiver. A tiny voice spoke, "I love you, Daddy, " she said and disconnected. I knew our15had been received.

It is true that Americans and Englishmen speak the English language in different ways. But it is also true that an American and an Englishman can talk together freely and easily. The differences in the way they speak are interesting but they are not important. Far from dividing them, the English language brings them closer together. So Americans and Englishmen know that a language which two peoples use together builds a bridge, not a wall, between them.
_________ Radio, television, the telephone, the mobile phone, the airplane, and other things of modern science have made the world smaller. Quick communication is more necessary than ever before.
Around the world today, more and more people are learning English as a means (方式) of communication. They come from every country, and they come from every walk of life. Among them are farmers, students, teachers, scientists, officials (官员) and artists—in fact, all kinds of people.
English, second only to Chinese for the number of people who speak it and second to no other for the number of people who are lea learning it, is a language that anyone, and everyone, can use 10 communicate. It is a world language. And it is a modern language, a language equal to (胜任) the needs of today and tomorrow. Those are two of the reasons it is used to widely around the world.
What is the hottest English word these years? "Selfie" may be one of them. It was even named Word the Year by Oxford Dictionaries in 2013. The word was first used in an Australian online forum in 2009. Now, almost everybody knows it.
Selfie is a photo that one takes of oneself. People usually take selfies with a smart phone and send them to a social media website. Nowadays, more and more people are taking selfies. From your best friend to your favourite pop star, selfies are taking over Renren and Sina Weibo.
What makes people love selfies? Selfies can help to remember what's going on in their personal life. "Almost every day, I take a photo of myself at school, and save it in my Qzone. These photos record my happy and sad moments. "said Huang Xu, 16, from Hunan. Another usual reason for taking a selfie is to share online. They hope to make friends and share their feelings with others. "During summer vacation, my classmates and I shared many selfies online. Through these photos, we got to know each other's holidays and feelings, " said Wang Lin, 15, from Henan. "I'm too shy to ask someone to take pictures of me, but it's easier to do it by myself. "
Although taking selfies is popular among young people around the world, they should be careful at the places where they take selies. People are warmed (警告) not to take lighthearted selfies in serious places, such as in some traffic accidents. In order to protect art works, selfie is banned in some museums and galleries, too.

Letting kids learn more about science at an early age is easier than you think. It is happening all around us, and you can use everyday things to encourage your children's interest.
But you don't need a high scientific degree to teach your children science. All you need is that you're willing to try to see the world, and to take the time to encourage their natural curiosity(好奇).
You can help by having an active attitude towards science yourself. And then listen to their answers without judging (评判) them, which will improve their confidence, and help you decide just what your children know or do not know.
So they need different kinds of science projects. Collecting rocks may interest your young daughter, but your elder son may need something more to deal with it. Knowing your children is the best way to find enjoyable learning activities. Here are some pore pieces of advice:
Choose activities that are the right level of difficulty.
Read the suggested ages on any projects, books, and then make sure that (he activity is proper for your child.
It's easy enough to ask rather than force him. Suggest choosing 2 or 3 things your child can do. When a child picks something, he is interested in, he will enjoy it and learn more from it.
A. If you are not sure, pick something easier. B. Different kids have different interests. C. Most parents believe it is difficult to help their children with science. D. Then start simply by asking your children questions about the things you see every day. E. Let your child choose the project or activity himself. |

A. Can you tell me something about it? B. Have you sent books to them? C. I helped them with their lessons. D. She raised some money for them. E. Is it your first time lo join in such activities? F. It was a wonderful experience! G. What about you? |

W: At three o'clock at the school gate.
M: Three o'clock? The park closes at 6 p. m.

Peter has two kilos since he gave up smoking.
He be a problem child.
In order to late for work, you'd better lake the subway.

Food waste has been a big problem around the world for a long time.
According to a study, Chinese restaurants waste 17 to 18 million tons of food a year. That could, 30 to 50 million people for a whole year. Many people think they just throw away a little food, but they don't realize how much work goes into the food. Let's take a look at the life of a tomato. You'll see it's than we waste when we throw away food.
Farmers buy seeds (种子)and plant them. They take care of the tomatoes every day. It takes 13 liters (升) of water to grow one tomato. When tomatoes are ready, they are picked and put on trucks (卡车). The truck may travel hundreds of kilometers them to supermarkets. Every100 kilometers of travel uses up about 15 liters of fuel. In the supermarkets, people buy "ugly" tomatoes, so they will be left and thrown away.
China is taking action to cut down on food waste. Many restaurants are joining in. They advise people to order food using the "N-I" formula (公式). And "N" stands for the 一the people at a table. If there are six people at the table, you should order just five
If people can't finish their meals, they are take the rest food home. "It works. There is much less food waste these days, "said a manager of a restaurant.
We all hope that food waste will disappear soon not only in China but also around the world.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Thanks for attending the graduation ceremony(毕业典礼) at our school. Firstly, I'd like to congratulate all the students here today. I remember meeting all of you when you were just starting Grade 7. You were all so full of energy and thirsty for knowledge. And yes, some of you were a little difficult to deal with! But today I see a hall full of talented young adults who are full of hope for the future. You've all grown up so much and I'm so proud of you.
Although you've all worked very hard over the last three years. None of you did it alone. I hope you'll remember the important people in your lives who helped and supported you—your parents, teachers, and friends. Please consider what they've done for you and what they mean to you. Never forget to thank the people around you.
Lastly, I'll give you some advice on how to deal with your future. The life in senior high school will be harder and you will have many difficult tasks in front of you. You'll make mistakes along the way, but the key is to learn from your mistakes and never give up. Along with difficulties, many exciting things are also waiting for you. Behind each door you open are chances to learn new things and you're able to make your own choices. Choose wisely and be responsible (有责任的)for your decisions and actions. Although you have to go your own ways, I hope you'll come back to visit our school in a few years.
As you set out (启程) on your new journey, you shouldn't forget where you came from. The future is yours. Good luck!
Look around you, how many of your classmates and friends are wearing glasses? A study by Australian National University, which was reported by the BBC, says that Asia has the most shortsighted students in the world; nine out of ten graduates of schools in Asian cities were shortsighted. The main reason: they weren't getting enough sunlight.
According to the study, primary school students in Singapore spend only 30 minutes outdoors every day. In Australia kids spend about three hours a day outside. As a result, fewer children in Australia are nearsighted—only 10 percent, compared to 90 percent in Singapore.
Eye experts believe that a person is shortsighted if his or her vision is blurred (模糊的)beyond 2 meters. People become shortsighted because their eyeballs grow out of shape and light entering their eyes cannot focus correctly. The body can produce a chemical called dopamine (多巴胺) to stop eyeballs from changing shape. Sunlight can help our bodies produce more dopamine.
"Children in Asia basically go to school, go home and stay inside, " Alan Morgan of the Australian National University told AFP. "They study and they watch television. "
But being a bookworm or a couch potato does not directly harm the eyes, he added. "As long as they get outside, it doesn't seem to matter how much studying they do, " he explained. "There are some kids who study hard and get outside and play hard and they are generally fine. The ones who are at major risk are the ones who study hard and don't get outside. "
Experts say children should go outside for two to three hours every day. This can include time spent in the playground and walking to and from school.
