A gift in a wrongplace brings unexpected happiness.
Since I came tomy new neighbourhood, I have had the pleasure of meeting a few neighbours. Theyseem to be quite1 people. For Christmas, I thought I would do something nice for each of the neighbours thatI know. I sat down and2. There were nine neighbours, and I alsoknew which houses they lived in.
However, I decided to3 one more person to my list, the lady I met everymorning walking to work as I drove down the street. She always managed a sweet smileand a hearty wave(挥手),4I had no idea which house she lived in.
My gift idea was to make small5 baskets and leave them on eachof my neighbour's front porches(门廊) the night of Christmas Eve. I kept the last one for the friendly lady, since I was still not exactly sure where she lived—6 the house down about where I met her each morning. Finally I decided to put it there. My neighbours really enjoyed the baskets anda couple even came by to7me.
This morning on my way towork, I placed my mail in the mailbox and noticed a Thank You card. I opened itand read the8 whichreally caught me by surprise.
The card said, "Thankyou for those lovely apples and strawberries you left on the porch of Tod. He9 on January 19, but he never stopped talking abouthow nice it was that someone10him in his time of illness. He really enjoyedit."
I was very11.I had no idea who Tod was or that he had been seriously12.I had left that nice lady's basket on Tod's porch by accident. I believe that Todnever expected to have that basket. I feel13 that the nice lady did not get a basket from methis Christmas, but I believe that if she knew what had happened, she would14 me.
I feel lucky tohave helped Tod be more cheerful in his last days. This just makes me further believethat sometimes15 inlife are beautiful.

Everybody makes decisions in daily life. They can be as important as what you will do in the future or as simple as what you will eat for breakfast. Any decision could be the turning point of your life.
I made an important decision when I was in Junior 3.
Before I made that decision I wasn't a good student. I didn't listen to my parents or teachers, and my grades became poor. Then came the high school entrance exam.
At the turning point of my life, my mom wanted to have a conversation with me. I felt impatient but when I looked at her eyes, I felt I couldn't refuse. Instead of asking me to study hard, to my surprise, Mom just asked what I wanted to do in the future. Without thinking too much, I just said I would like to study hard.
Mom smiled and asked again, "I asked: what do you WANT to do?"
I had never seriously thought about the question before. So, I kept silent.
"Whether you want to go on studying or enter the society," she went on, "it is your own decision. It should be made by yourself, not anyone else, including me." After saying that, she had tears in her eyes.
For the first time in my life I was asked to make my own decision. I sat in my chair and thought about my life, my future and what kind of person I wanted to become.
It took me what seemed to be ages to make the biggest decision so far in my life—I wanted to be a man who makes a difference in the world. To achieve that, I needed to study hard.
The path to my future became clear to me. I didn't act rebelliously (叛逆地) any more. With passion (激情) in my heart, I studied hard.
Now, I'm 17 and I'm in one of the best schools in my city, in one of the best classes at the school and I am one of the best students in the class.
Thanks to that decision, I have become what I am today.
Rob Frenette had problems with bullies(欺辱) at school for eleven years. He was often lonely and scared. When he was fifteen, however, he decided to do something about his problems. He walked into a newspaper office and told them about the bullying. His story went into the newspaper and soon all the TV stations in Canada wanted to talk to him about his experiences. They also wanted to hear his ideas to stop bullying.
After that, Rob continued his studies at school, but in his free time he helped other people with bullying problems. With a friend Katie Neu, he made a website called www. bullyingcanada.ca. Visitors to the website can find advice, stories and poems about bullying, in both English and French. When people are upset, they can talk on the phone or online to Rob and his team. Every weekend Rob has to answer e-mails to the website. He also speaks to children, teachers and members of government around the country about bullying.
Rob's most important message is: "When bullies are unkind to you, it isn't your fault. There's nothing wrong with you, so you should try to keep trusting yourself. And remember that people care about your problems. You just have to find those people."
One of Rob's ideas is "Blue Day", a special day for stopping bullying in schools. Students have to wear blue clothes and in class they learn how to stop bullying. More than 150 Canadian schools now celebrate Blue Day, but Rob won't stop until there's a Blue Day in every school in Canada.
a. Rob and his friend made a website. b. Rob was bullied at school.
c. Rob created "Blue Day". d. Rob told his story in public.
It's rare to see a team earn 11 straight wins (连胜) in a tournament (锦标赛). However, the Chinese Women's volleyball team has done it!
On Sept 29, China took the Women's Volleyball World Cup Trophy(奖杯) in Japan. The team didn't lose any of its games during the tournament. It was also the team's 10th world title (冠军).
"The trophy is the best gift to celebrate the 70th birthday of New China," People's Daily said in an article.
The Chinese Women's volleyball team has long been the pride of Chinese athletics. In the 1980s, the team won five world titles in a row (连续), which raised people's confidence at the time. Since then its fighting spirit has encouraged generations (一代代) of people, both within the team and across the country.
Working hard was the key to the team's success. The World Cup was played in several different cities and the team didn't have much time to train. The girls had to squeeze in (挤出) training time when they could. On Sept 25, for example, they arrived in Osaka at 2:30 pm and started training only an hour later.
Never giving up, especially during difficult times, is also the key to getting success, according to head coach Lang Ping. Many of the team's members kept on playing even after being hurt.
With their latest win, the girls are ready to prepare for next year's Tokyo Olympics.
In ancient Egypt, women did not go out to work. They stayed and worked at home. Many Egyptian men were farmers. Some men were builders or fishermen. Other men worked as artists. Some other important people did not do any farming.
The weather in Egypt was very hot. Ancient Egyptians did not wear many clothes, Men, women and children often wore simple robes made of thin cloth. On their feet they wore light open shoes. People, including women, shaved(剃) hair from their heads to keep cool.
Children in ancient Egypt grew up to do the same jobs as their parents. Girls stayed at home with their mothers. They learned to look after the home. Boys worked with their fathers. They learned to do the jobs their fathers did. They only went to school to learn to write if they wanted to become a scribe (抄写员).
Many of the games played by ancient Egyptians are similar to games we still play today, Children played racing and jumping games. They also played ball games and with wooden toys. Older children played a game like chess.
The kings of Egypt (the pharaohs) had enough power to master their country. The people thought that the pharaoh was a god. He owned everything. Everyone had to do what he told them to do. The pharaohs built huge tombs. When a pharaoh died, he was buried in the tomb. The tombs were often in the shape of pyramids. When a pharaoh was buried, he was surrounded by treasure and by things to help him in the next world, such as food, clothes, furniture and weapons.
