The back door of the ambulance(救护车) was suddenly shut. The driver ran to the front, jumped into his seat and1 the engine. Inside were the worried parents, Mr. and Mrs. Green. The mother was holding2 baby daughter, Ellen. The little girl had some food stuck in her throat(卡住喉咙) and3 hardly breathe.
The driver, Mr. White, turned4 his siren(警笛) and flashing light, and started speeding towards the 5 hospital. The cars ahead of him pulled out of the way as he drove through the busy traffic. From the back of the ambulance, the parents were shouting at him to hurry, since Ellen had almost stopped breathing. Mr. White knew he had no time 6, so he drove straight past the traffic lights.
Coming towards him from his right was a taxi. The driver who was listening to his radio didn't hear the ambulance. The lights were green, and he drove straight on into the path of the ambulance.
Mr. White tried to stop his ambulance, but it was too late. It hit 7taxi. Everyone was shaken, 8no one was hurt. Mr. White looked back to see 9little Ellen was.
"Look!" cried Mrs. Green. "She is breathing again."
"It must be the crash," said her husband 10. "It knocked the food out of her throat. The accident turned out to be a blessing."
I know Catherine who is smart, educated and interesting. But I avoid her because she never1 complaining! For years, I fought against my feelings, because I really like and admire her, but I've found I just can't be her friend. Her world is full of "buts…" The trip would have been nice, but the drive was too long. The food was good, but the light of the restaurant was too2 . The hotel was too hot, the bed hurt her back and the room service was too slow. Her complaints were3 changing me. Months ago, my best friend Daisy was listening to me complaining about Catherine4 she just became really angry. "Either break up with her, or leave me alone." She shouted at me, "I'm tired of 5your complaining." Her honesty surprised me, and I began to keep myself away from Catherine. Later, I did6 her.
Now I try to remain happy and positive about life, and find friends of the same. There's been scientific research lately. It shows that people who find7 to be thankful for their life are actually happier, and I believe that is true. Endless complaining seems to control your life if you let it come into your brain. And too much complaining will actually make your life8 .
Some people take "gratitude(感激之情) walks" every day, where they9 their life in a positive way. By developing a grateful attitude, you can be turned away from what's troubling you, and 10 what makes you happy. Then you will have a beautiful life.

The traditional Chinese Lunar Calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. Major Heat(大暑), the 12th solar term of the year, begins this year on July 23 and ends on August 6.During Major Heat, most parts of China enter the hottest season of the year. The following are some things you should know about Major Heat.
A season of harvesting and planting
During Major Heat, the sunshine, high temperatures, and heavy rainfall are good for agricultural crops. But like Minor Heat, many natural calamities such as floods, droughts and typhoons also happen during Major Heat. Therefore, it's important to harvest and plant in time to avoid setbacks caused by natural disasters.
Sending the Major Heat ship in Zhejiang
The ship is filled with various animals for sacrifice(祭品) such as pigs, sheep, chicken, fish and shrimps. More than 50 fishermen take turns carrying the ship as they march through the streets. Drums are played and fireworks are lit. Both sides of the streets are filled with people praying for blessings. After a series of ceremonies, the ship is finally carried to the wharf(码头).Then, the ship is pulled out of the fishing port and burned at sea. People carry out this ritual(典礼) to pray for good harvests and health.
Eating litchi and Mizao in Fujian
On the day of Major Heat, there is a custom of eating litchi, Mizao in Putian, Fujian Province, as a celebration of Major Heat. Litchi is a nutritious(有营养的) fruit. People usually soak(浸泡) litchi in cold well water first and eat it. Mizao is made of fermented (已发酵的)rice. On the day of Major Heat, people cook them with brown sugar.

A female swimmer once set a goal for herself. She decided to swim across the English Channel before she retired. If she could succeed, she would be the first person in the world did it. On that day, she into the sea without any hesitation (犹豫) and swam towards the opposite bank without any protection. On the journey, she met with heavy fog, heavy rain and heavy waves. Though she was , she didn't stop and kept on swimming. But in end, she gave up. And she didn't know that the opposite bank was only one mile when she gave up.
Later she asked about the reason. And she said, "The reason why gave up is that I could not see the place which I was going to reach completely." It was a great. that one mile broke her dream.
we were young children, too many success stories have been telling us about courage and persistence (坚持). But they never told us where to find courage and persistence. You can only have courage and persistence when you know where your goal is.
A life without a goal is a ship without a compass. It goes nowhere. There is no courage or persistence in a life without goals.
Calligraphy(书法)is one of the most traditional forms of art in China. It's part of our culture. Since Sept. 2019, more than 20 schools in Rongcheng District (区), Jieyang have given calligraphy classes to their students. The new course is now popular with the students. Here is what they said about it: I think the course teaches us to write standard Chinese characters(汉字) in a proper way, using the right gestures. I advise making calligraphy a necessary subject in the primary school so that we can start to learn it at a young age. —Li Yuhui Although we are in an information age when many things can be done on phones and computers, still we should go back to handwriting by using brushes and ink. The lesson not only provides me with a good chance to learn Chinese art, but also makes me pay more aattention to my handwriting. Calligraphy is well worth learning. —Xiao Ronglan I am glad to find my handwriting improves after taking the lesson. Now I spend about half an hour practicing calligraphy every day and it has become one of my hobbies. One thing which surprises me is that I also become more patient. That's out of my expectation. —Wu Duanhua Our school sets up the course mainly to carry forward the traditional art. I don't consider itboring or useless. Instead, it's interesting and meaningful. I really enjoy the beauty the Chinese characters bring us. — Mo Linwei |
