Li Qinmei lives in Zhucheng, Shandong Province. She lost her 1 at three. Four years later, her father couldn't 2 after an accident. After the death of her grandmother, 12-year-old Li Qinmei had to support her broken family.
Qinmei learnt to 3 and live a life with 24 yuan per month from the government. The most 4 things she had to deal with were to 5 her father wash, dress and use the toilet as he could hardly move.
During most of her junior school years, she went to classes 6 once a month as her father was seriously ill at that time. “I taught 7 at home and asked teachers for help on my school days,” she said.
Though she had a hard life, the difficulties taught her to be 8. “My classmates have both Mum and Dad to 9 them. How happy they are! However, I don't feel 10 as I still have my dear dad and many kind people with me. I believe I will go to college,” she said.
Dear Tommy,
I'm writing to you on your third birthday. I want to tell you something about your grandma's time. I was born sixty-eight years ago in a small village.
Transportation used to be a big problem. When we travelled from village to village, we used to walk or ride horses.
Shopping was not an easy job, either. There were no supermarkets in the neighborhood. We used to grow most of our own food: rice and vegetables. We kept things cool in a special underground room.
The biggest difference is that you have electricity. We didn't have electricity until very late in our small village. We didn't have any televisions of course. We used to perform our local music and enjoy it very much.
Life used to be very hard, but I was not upset. I would like you to know about the old days and be happy about what you have. Remember , feeling good about life is the key to happiness.
Love
Your grandma
A young lady was driving alone through the street. It was dark and rainy. Suddenly she saw an old woman by the side of the road, holding up her hands as if she wanted a lift(搭便车). “I can't leave her out in this weather,” the young lady said to herself. She stopped her car and opened the door.
“Do you want a lift?” she asked. The old woman nodded and got on the car. After a while, she said to the old woman, “Have you been waiting for a long time?” The old woman shook her head, “Strange” the young lady thought. She tried again, “Bad weather, isn't it?” The old woman nodded.
Then the young lady noticed the old woman's hands, which were large and hairy. Suddenly she realized the woman was a man! She was frightened at first. Then she stopped the car. “I couldn't see out of the rear screen(后挡风玻璃),”she said, “Would you mind cleaning it for me?”
“The old woman” nodded and opened the door. As soon as “she”got out of the car, the frightened young lady drove off as fast as she could.
When she got home, she noticed “the old woman” had left her handbag behind, she picked it up and opened it. Inside there was a gun.
Once there was a parrot on sale in a pet store. It was a beautiful red and blue bird. It sat on a perch in the middle of the store, so that everyone could see it when they came in. The owner was very proud of it and asked a high price for it.
One day a man went into the store. “That's a beautiful bird,” he said to the pet store owner, “But why is it so expensive? Is it unusual bird?”
“No, it's not very unusual. It's expensive because it can talk,” the pet store owner said.
“I see. How can I make it talk?” the man asked.
The pet store owner asked him, “Do you see those string tied to each of the bird's legs?”
“Yes,”the man answered.
“Well, you pull those strings,” the pet store owner told him. “That will make the parrot talk.”
The man asked, “Do you mind if I try?”
“Not at all,” the pet store owner said.
The man walked up to the parrot and pulled the string on its left leg. The parrot said, “Good morning.”
The man pulled the string on the parrot's right leg. This time the parrot said, “How are you today?”
“That's not very interesting, ” said the man. “Any parrot could do that.” Then he laughed, “But what would happen if I pulled both strings at the same time?”
“I'll fall off my perch, you fool!” the parrot said.
A new research on students' sleeping habits says that more than 70% of students do not get enough sleep.
Researchers found that primary school students get 9 hours and 10 minutes of sleep a night, junior high school students get 8 hours and 6 minutes, and senior high school students get 7 hours and 9 minutes. None of those hours are enough for each group. Not enough sleep can cause many kinds of problems in children and teenagers.
In 2007, Shanghai Municipal Education Commission asked primary and middle schools in the city to adjust their timetables so that students could get more sleep. Two years later, a research found that students at schools that adjusted their timetables got more sleep than in 2005.
The researchers hope that the government will take measures to make students have enough sleep. Students in other places may even less sleep than those in Shanghai.
In Shanghai, students at schools that adjusted their timetables got less sleep in 2007 than in 2005.
