"See you at Open House tonight, Amy," Evelyn shouted from the school bus.
"Don't forget to ask your mom if I can come over tomorrow!"
"OK!" I called back. I wished 1 could feel excited about my first Open House at my new school, but I was1. What will other kids say when they find out my parents can't hear? Would Evelyn still like to visit my home2she knows that?
Dad drove us to school at night. As we walked down the hallway to the3 , my mother stopped in front of the bulletin board "Look at Amy's picture!" Mom said4. She always does that when she's excited because she can't hear5Some older kids turned to look at us for a while and I wanted to6in the corner.
Then I led my parents into my classroom and7, and I didn't see Evelyn. Ms Jennings walked towards us. I8my parents to her and told her that they were deaf*. Then I helped Ms Jennings explain9she said to my parents with sign language*.
During our10conversation, some of my classmates were watching us and speaking quietly. Then I noticed Evelyn and her mom standing by the door.
"You can talk to them with your11? That's so cool!" she came over and said to me.
"You think so?" I was not12of her words.
Evelyn13. "It's like a secret code*.Would you teach me some words sometime?"
I smiled. "Of course."
"A woman in my dad's apartment building uses sign," she said. "maybe I can give her a14with such a special greeting next time I visit my dad".
"Your dad doesn't live with you?" I said.
"My parents have got separated for many years."
"Oh, L... I'd been so worried about my family being different from everyone else's that I had15thought about Evelyn's family. "Hey, if you come over tomorrow, we can practice some sign language then."
What can you take in Shanghai? Subway must be your first choice!
Why is it called Mars? You might have asked yourself this before. Well, Mars is the name of the Roman god of war. People have seen the planet as a symbol of war for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks called the planet Ares after their god of war. Chinese people called it the "fire star" for the same reason.
Scientists have been interested in the planet since long before any space tasks. Egyptian scientists first saw Mars in the sky more than 4,000 years ago. Since then, people from all over the world have studied the planet.
Over the years, scientists have continued to study the planet and learned some basic things about it.
Mars is 10 times lighter and about 6 times smaller than Earth. Earth is 93 million miles (about 150 million km) from the sun, while Mars is 142 million miles away. That means it is much colder on Mars. In fact, the average temperature on Mars is - 62℃. Scientists found water on Mars long ago, but because of the low temperatures there, it is frozen. One day on Mars is called a sol and is about 40 minutes longer than one Earth day. The Red Planet's surface gravity* is only 37% as strong as Earth's, meaning you would be able to jump nearly two times higher on Mars.
A book cover that attracts you to read, an app that keeps you exercising, a search engine that is easy to use ... these all need good design. Good design makes our lives easier and better. But what makes good design?
Fortune magazine recently published* a list of the 100 greatest designs of modern times. The list shows a clear change in design idea over the past years, according to Fortune. In the 1950s, design mostly referred to the aesthetics* of a product, such as the beautiful design of a sports car. But today, the key point is how it can solve problems and change society in a good way.
One example is the Chinese app WeChat. It offers many kinds of functions*, including messaging, video calling and online payment. It's a "one-stop shop" that makes our life much easier.
Mobike is also on the list. In big cities, many people have to travel a long way between the bus or subway stop and their homes or offices. Thanks to China's Mobike, people can solve the "last mile" problem by riding bikes, Fortune said. Mobike's bikeshare service allows people to find a bike almost anywhere in most Chinese cities. Its online payment allows people to easily open a bike lock with a smartphone.
Here is another great design called OXO Good Grips Peeler. This peeler* was designed by American designer Sam Farber in 1990. When he found that his wife had trouble holding her peeler because of the hurt of her arm, Sam decided to create a more useful tool that would benefit everyone. The peeler has a wide handle* that is easy to hold and control. He also used a special material to make the handle, which is soft to the touch and non-slip even when it gets wet.
An elephant and a crocodile were once standing beside a river. They were disputing* who the better animal was.
"Look at my strength," said the elephant. "I can pull up a tree, roots and all, with my trunk*."
"Ah! But your skin is not nearly so thick as mine," replied the crocodile. "No knife or tooth can cut through it"
A lion happened to pass.
"My dear friends!" said the king of all animals, going up to them, "Let me know the cause of your disagreement."
"Will you kindly tell us who the better animal is?" cried both at once.
"Certainly," said the lion, pointing across the river. "Do you see the metal hat on that wall?"
"Yes", replied the beasts.
"Well, then," continued the lion, "go and get it, and bring it to me, and I shall be able then to decide between you."
Upon hearing this, off they started. The crocodile, being used to the water, reached the opposite side of the river first, and was soon standing beside the wall.
Here he waited till the elephant came up. The elephant, seeing that the crocodile had no way of reaching the hat, raised his long trunk, and took down the hat quite easily.
They then made their way together back again across the river. The elephant was trying to keep up with the fast-moving crocodile in the water and became careless. The elephant dropped the hat and it fell to the river bottom. The crocodile noticed the accident, so down he dived*, and brought it up in his huge mouth. They then returned, and the crocodile laid the metal hat at the lion's feet. The king took it up, and turning to the elephant, said:
"You, because of your size and trunk, were able to reach the hat on the wall. But having lost it, you were unable to get it back. And you," said the lion to the crocodile, "although unable to reach the hat, were able to dive for it and save it. You are both wise and able in your own ways. One is no better than the other."
