How are you feeling today? Do you have a sorethroat? Are you coughing? Sneezing? These are all very common1 that tell your body is fighting a disease. Yourimmune system(免疫系统) works to protect you from diseases, but when it is weakened, you feel sick. The illness that you feel could be2 by one of two things: bacteria(细菌) or viruses(病毒).
Bacteria are things with just one cell( 细胞). They can be3 outside the body, but we also have trillions ofbacteria living in our bodies,4 thereare more bacteria than human cells in our bodies.5 don't worry: ninety-nine percent of these bacteriaare good for us. They6 usto feel happy, protect us from disease, and help us digest(消化)food. Your7 aloneincludes more bacteria than there are people on earth!8 , there are also bad bacteria that cause illnesses. We can treat these illnesses
with antibiotics(抗生素).
Viruses are9 than bacteria. They are little in size. They cannotexist without a host—a(n)10 or plant to live in. That person next to you who'ssneezing is the host of a virus. So, watch out! With each sneeze, he or she11 you over 100,000 virus cells, traveling at a speedof over 160 km/h! Once those cells get into your body, you become the12 . The virus then changes in order to make moreviruses in your body. If you get a virus, you can't13 it with antibiotics. You simply need to wait14 your body gets rid of it. Of course, you can protect15 from viruses such as the flu bywashing your hands. Over eighty percent of viruses are spread by touching an infectedperson or thing, so be sure to take care of yourself and stay healthy.

There are many advantages of becoming a professional( 专业的)musician. The biggest advantage is being ableto do something you love. You will have the chance to travel to many different placesand meet a lot of different people. That will open up your eyes.
However, there are also disadvantages of being a professional musician. One of the biggest disadvantages for most musicians is that they don't always haveenough money. Most of the time, you will be looking for jobs. Sometimes you won'tbe able to find a good job. Another disadvantage is the place you live in. If youwant to be a musician, you usually have to move to an area that has a lot of jobs, such as New York City. The cost of living in these areas is usually very high. Thethird disadvantage is that you can't have asteady family life. Differentjobs will take a musician to different places, so most musicians are unable to havea regular family.
Every day, people may touch thousands of chemicals(化学药品).These chemicals are said to be harmless to humanhealth. In fact, the chemicals are considered so safe that we may wash with them.We put them on our bodies and even our faces. Other chemical products are used aroundour homes. Each chemical seems harmless on its own. But when connected with otherchemicals, they may become deadly. That is the finding of a two-year studyby a high-profile (高调的) task force of scientists. The taskforce was told to find the cancer-causing(致癌)possibilityof chemical mixtures.
Linda Gulliver was one of the 174 scientists on the task force. Theirjob was to study the cancer-causing possibility of 85 chemicals. All 85 are saidto be common in the environment.
Ms. Gulliver explains that chemicals have the possibility or abilityto form dangerous mixtures. Even simple minerals(矿物) can become dangerous when mixed with chemicals found in plastics orbeauty products.
She says the latest way to find whether(是否) chemicals cause cancer is to test them one ata time. This method leads to a long list of "safe" chemicals. She alsosays, "We need some researches to find out what mixtures of chemicals wouldbe more harmful than others; what groups of chemicals, when together, would producemore harmful effects(影响). But at the moment, that is notknown."
Many people have argued about which is more important—reaching our destination(目的地) or enjoying the view along the way. I agree with the second opinion.
Nearly all of us know the saying, "All roads lead to Rome." However, few of us know the second half of this saying, "though some are born Roman." What does it mean? The first half of the expression explains that there are many ways of achieving the same goal. However, the second half forces us to acknowledge (承认) that in fact someone will always achieve it more easily than others in the life.
So does it mean that the efforts spent in reaching Rome are a complete waste? I can get a lot from the journey I take to reach my goal.
Is it because we like challenges? Do we do it because we want to meet new people and visit new places? Do we do it to follow others? Or do we just want to have an unforgettable adventure?
All in all, whatever our original motivation(原始动机)is, we shouldn't miss enjoying the view along the way. I believe sometimes we should slow down to enjoy the wonderful view along the way before focusing on reaching our destination.
A. So does it mean nothing to us at all? B. Actually, I don, t feel any worse about myself C. It might just be as important as reaching our goals D. They stand right there where we try our best to get to E. No one will remember the joy and sadness on the way F. But we should also understand why we want to reach our goals G. There is nothing more important than enjoying the beautiful sights on the way. |
A. What about you? B. It will begin at 6:30. C. I'll find it on my cell phone. D. But can you do that anyway? E. What kind of music do you have? F. I think he wants us to bring some CDs. G. Is there anything else you want to know, Mary? |
A: Hi, Mary. Are you going to Bill's birthday party tonight?
B: Yes. He sent me a massage. But I deleted(删除) it by accident.
A: Well, I got a message, too. Wait a minute.
B: Great. Thanks! What time will it start?
A:
B: Oh, I thought it would be later. And do we have to take anything?
A:
B: Sounds good. I've got lots of different ones.
A:
B: Hip-hop mostly. Will that be OK?
A: Of course.
B: No, thanks. See you then.
A: See you.
