Last Friday, I agreed to meet some friends at 6: 00 p. m. in a coffee shop. The weather was sunny, so I decided to walk there. I arrived ten minutes early. I ordered a cup of coffee and sat watching people. There were some boys playing football on the street, and a small boy was running after the ball as it rolled across the road.

Suddenly (突然), there came a car. It was going very fast. When the driver saw the boy in his way, he braked (刹车) hard. But it was too late. The small boy was lying on the street without moving. To everyone's surprise, the car didn't stop. It drove away quickly.

People ran to the boy. There was a cut on the boy's head and he lost a lot of blood. The coffee shop owner (主人) telephoned the police. Soon an ambulance (救护车) arrived and took the boy to the hospital.

At 6: 30 p. m. the police arrived and started questioning people. About half an hour later, they asked me to go to the police station because I saw everything. I gave them all the information I knew because I really wanted them to catch the driver. I didn't leave the police station until 8: 00 p. m. After that I went home because I didn't feel like talking to anyone.

The next day, the boy's parents called me to say thanks. They also told me their boy was fine and the driver was in the police station now.

"Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. " This is an old English saying. It means that when we go to bed early, we can get up early the next morning. Then we will become healthy. We will also become rich and clever.

This is true. To keep healthy, we must have enough sleep. Experts (专家) say that adults should get seven to eight hours of sleep a night. Teenagers need nine to ten hours. And schoolaged children may need more than ten hours of sleep. Children who do not have enough sleep can't do their work very well. They won't be wise and they may not become wealthy!

We also need exercise. Walking, running, swimming and playing games are all exercise. Exercise keeps us strong. It also helps the blood to move around the body. This is very important. Our blood takes the nutrition (营养) from food to all parts of our body.

The head also needs blood. So exercise that moves the blood to our head helps us think better!

    1. (1) If we want to keep fit, we'd better ____.
A . go to bed late B . get up late C . stay up late D . have enough sleep
    2. (2) Who need the most hours of sleep to keep healthy?
      A . Adults. B . Teenagers. C . Experts. D . Schoolaged children.
    3. (3) A child ____ when he does not have enough sleep.
      A . can't study well B . will be wise C . will be wealthy D . will be active in class

I was cycling (骑自行车) and saw a man about 250 meters in front of me. I could tell he was cycling slower than me and I decided to catch up with him and beat (打败) him.

I started cycling faster and faster. After a few minutes I was only about 100 meters behind him, so I tried harder. Finally, I caught up with him and passed him. I felt so good. I won, but he didn't even know we were racing.

After I passed him, I found that I had missed my turn.

Isn't it just like life? We often race against others, trying to beat them or show that we're more successful or more important. We spend so much time and energy (精力) running after them that we miss out on our own paths (小路).

The problem with unhealthy competition is that it's a neverending cycle. There will always be someone in front of you. What you should do is just run your own race and wish others well.

    1. (1) When the writer saw the man, he decided to ____ him.
      A . ride past B . follow C . make friends with D . stay away from

A . Competition is important in life. B . Get better grades than others. C . Try to catch up with the winner. D . Follow your own paths in life.
