Have you ever really looked at a tree? All trees are big plants. Like all plants, trees have roots. The roots hold trees in the ground. They keep trees from falling over. They bring water and food that trees need to live on.
A tree has a fat stem. We call the tree's fat stem "trunk". Inside the trunk, a tree holds water and food. The water and food go up through the trunk to the green leaves. The leaves use sunlight to make more food for the tree.
Trees help us. They help clean the air. They give us food. Fruits, nuts and chocolate all come from trees. Paper, chairs, beds and houses also come from trees. Trees are also important for other living creatures (生物). They provide a home for birds and other animals. Many animals eat part of trees. Be friends with trees! We need trees and trees need us! Often young trees need special care. They need water and protection (保护).

Her smile was so sweet that Mike wanted to see it again. She seemed to understand him, so once again she smiled. Mike was very glad.
They sat there all the afternoon, eating and talking. As it grew dark, Mike got up to leave. Before he left, he hugged(拥抱) the old lady and she gave him her sweetest smile.
When Mike got home, his mother was surprised by the look of joy on his face. "I met a granny in the park. Her smile was like the kind of smile I had seen on Grandma's face."
The old lady also returned to her home happily. She told her son that she had food and drinks with a little boy. "He was as lovely as Brittany." she said. Her son was surprised, because he had never seen her so happy since Brittany, her grandson, died weeks ago.
Mr. Jones and Mr. Brown work in the same office (办公室). One day Mr. Jones says to Mr. Brown, "I will have a small party at our house on Monday evening. Would you and your wife like to come?"

The largest dinosaur on the Earth— Seismosaurus (地震龙). People found the fossil (化石)of Seismosaurus in New Mexico of America in 1979. It lived 145-155 million years ago. It was about 90-120 feet long. It weighed 25 to 50 tons. It had a long neck and a long tail. It was so heavy that it had to walk slowly. Seismosaurus ate plants. It needed to eat lots of plants every day to provide energy for its large body. Because its mouth was very small, it had to spend as many as 23 hours eating every day. |
The world? s most unusual fish ——Sea horse Sea horses live in warm ocean waters all over the world. Because the top half of this fish looks like a small horse, people called it "sea horse". Looking at the sea horse's tail, you might think "sea monkey" is a better name. Its eyes are very special. When one eye looks ahead, the other can look back at the same time. It isn't good at swimming, so it swims slowly. But it is the only fish that can swim straightly. Sea horses feed on live food, such as small shrimps (虾). In just one day, a sea horse can eat 3000 shrimps! Sea horses keep safe from other fish by staying in plants and grasses that grow under the sea. They can also change colors to protect themselves. |
The earth is about 4,600 million years old. Human beings have lived on the earth for several million years, but during this period we have changed our planet a lot in many ways.
All over the world, people have cut down millions of trees, so more and more kinds of animals and plants are disappearing. In big cities, cars and buses have polluted the air. Factories have also polluted the land and the water.
It is important to the earth. But now air pollution is destroying it and that has made a very big hole in the ozone layer (臭氧层)
Carbon dioxide (CO2) in the air has increased a lot.It has formed a "blanket (毛毯)" around the earth. This makes our earth become warmer and warmer. Therefore, this causes the level of the ocean to rise.
All these problems are very serious. We must do something to stop our earth from being polluted.
A. The heat from the Sun can't escape, so the temperature is rising. B. Too much harmful light from the Sun passes through it and reaches the earth directly. C. Some things we've done are very good for the earth while some are bad. D. Around the earth, there's a special kind of oxygen called “ozone”. E. It mainly comes from different kinds of burning materials. |
