A gift is necessary whenone is invited to visit friends in China. After greetings, the gift should bepassed immediately to the host. Remember that usually Chinese people will notopen the gift in front of the person who gives1.To show the respect, it may be2 to explain what the gift is. Bringing somenutrients and tonics (营养品、补品) to the elders in the family is a goodidea. You can3prepare some small gifts for the spouse (配偶) or kids of the host. The host usually makes full4by carefully tidying up the house and5 alot of delicious dishes.6themeal is well prepared, the host may say to the guest politely, "Mypreparation is not enough, please excuse me for my poor treat. " As aguest, you should make the host believe that there is plenty to eat by praisingthe food.
While eating, the elderswill use chopsticks to7foodfor guests as a tradition and ask them to eat8.As a guest, you should accept their goodwill readily. But nowadays, the youngerpeople do the traditional way less.
After dinner, tea andfruit are usually served. When the guests are to leave, the host may stillpolitely ask them to stay. They don't have totake it9 and they can try to find a good time to leave. This doesn't mean that leaving early is alwaysa good idea as the host may feel that the guests are not satisfied with thetreat. Finding the right time to leave10thesituation.
It was a Christmas night. I was an unlucky nurse who had to work on such a beautiful festival. When I was complaining (抱怨) about it, three people appeared at my desk—a tired woman and two children.
"Are you all sick? " I asked doubtfully because they seemed all right.
"Yes, " the woman answered weakly and lowered her head.
But when they started to present their problems, things became unclear. One child had a fever, but his temperature was OK. The other child had an earache, but she could not tell me which ear hurt. It seemed that the mother was pretending (假装) to cough.
Something was wrong. But I only explained that it might take a while before a doctor could meet them. "Take your time, please, " said the mother. I checked their charts—no address. Suddenly I knew, they were homeless while the hospital was warm.
The family huddled (蜷缩) together under the Christmas tree, smiling and taking with each other sweetly. Quietly, I went back to the nurses' station and told them what happened in the waiting room. It was just like the God sending us a gift on Christmas Day. The nurses' station suddenly came back to life. All the nurses went into action for " a Christmas emergency (急诊) ".
We took out our meals for our Christmas "patients". We also put together oranges and apples as presents. We tired to exceed the needs of a family who only wanted a warm places on Christmas night. Later, the little girl kissed me and said, "Thanks for being our angel (天使). "

Starting high school means many changes in your life. Most teenagers look forward to the first day of high school, but still feel a little bit nervous. In order to make your high school life easier, you can follow these tips.
Learn all you can about your first day before the first day. Take part in some activities that are held at the school for new students to know the school better. If parents are invited to these activities, take yours with you. Carefully look over all the materials you receive. Be sure you know where the school's buildings are.
Get the things you will need for classes. Buy the things suggested on your teachers' supply lists and place your materials for each class separately.
Keep up with your high school workload(工作量). If you find you're not doing well in a subject, make use of after-school study groups or ask your teacher to help you with your schoolwork. Consider private tutoring to get you through a difficult time.
There're more extracurricular(课外) activities in high school than in middle school, such as clubs, music and theater groups, student government and sports teams. Make friends and be seen at such school activities. Join a club or other organizations to meet people and develop friendships. Ask someone in school activities if you don't know how. This is a good time to do what you like doing and an opportunity to try new things. Who said school has to be all work and no play?
Since you'll attend more activities in high school than in middle school, you'll have to learn how to manage your time.
In nature, you may see manyinsects (昆虫) and animals of different colors. Have youever wondered why?
Locusts(蝗虫) are super delicious food for birds, but it is not always an easyjob for birds to catch them. It is neither because locusts are good jumpers orrunners nor because they are smarter than their enemies. The reason is that thecolors of locusts change with the colors of crops. When crops are young, locusts look green. But when autumn comes, locusts change to the yellow andbrown color as crops do.
Brown bears, tigers andother animals move quietly through forests. They can't be seen easily by their enemies. This is because they havecolors similar to the trees. For the same reason, polar bears that live on aland of snow and ice are white. Butterflies(蝴蝶) and bees living among the flowers are colorful like flowers. Soilinsects are mostly dark-colored and they live under the soil(土壤) in a dark and wet environment. However, insects with colorsdifferent from plants can easily be found and eaten by others. So in order tosurvive, they have to hide themselves in the daytime and appear only at night.
Have you ever noticed someeven stranger acts? The ink(墨) fish in the sea can sendout some very black ink when it faces danger. As the ink spreads over, itsenemies will find themselves suddenly in a dark world. At the same time the inkfish immediately swims away. That is how it keeps itself safe though it is notstrong at all.

One day in class, the teacher held up an apple. She stood on the platform(讲台) and said, "Please it in the air, and…"
One student his hand and said, "I can smell it. It is the smell of an apple. "
The teacher stepped the platform, passed by each of the students and said, "Smell to see if the smell of the apple is still in the air. "
Half of the students put up their hands to show that they could smell it. The teacher returned to theof the classroom and asked again who else could smell the apple. The rest raised their hands except one boy. The teacher came to the boy and asked. "You really can't smell the apple? "
The boy answered. "No, I can't smell it. I don't think it's a apple. "
The teacher at the boy and said to the class, "He's right! It's not to get the apple smell from this apple.
All of the other students had been tricked. Some may have thought that perhaps the apple didn't have the apple smell, they didn't dare to speak up. They just the first student blindly and went along with him.
