The weather is getting hotter and hotter. You are thirsty playing basketball or riding home from school. A cold drink may be just the thing. But be careful what you are drinking. Something that looks cool may not be good for your health.
There are plenty of "energy drinks" advertisement on TV. Most of them have beautiful colors and cool names. They tell you they are helpful to your health. Sounds great and lots of people believe them!
But after a careful check you may find that most energy drinks have lots of caffeine (咖啡因) in them. These drinks are especially aimed at young people, students, busy people and sports players. Makers sometimes say their drinks make you better at sports and can keep you awake. But he careful not to drink too much.
Caffeine makes your heart beat fast. Because of this, the International Olympic Committee has limited (限制) its use. Caffeine in most energy drinks is as strong as that in a cup of coffee or tea. Possible health dangers have something to do with energy drinks. Just one box of energy drink can make you nervous, have difficulty sleeping and can even cause heart problems. Scientists say that teenagers should be discouraged from taking drinks with a lot of caffeine in them.
Few parents can hear the words "What can I do to help?" from their kids. Teenagers spend more time on video games, computers and mobile phones, so they help less with housework.
Students at a primary school in Fuzhou, East China's Fujian Province were required to clean the school toilets to help them develop good habits. But some parents are strongly against the idea. They can't see the advantages of students doing such chores. They think that the school should provide students with a proper education, not the chance to be school cleaners.
In fact, parents, schools and society play an equally (同等地) important role in developing the character of students. It is good for schools to give students such tasks, because few of the students will do them at home. Their parents want them to do homework only.
In recent years, some parents will make mountains out of molehills when students are asked to do some chores in schools. Some will complain the teachers if their kids get hurt in schools; some will even challenge the schools' teaching methods and management. As a result, many primary schools, especially those in big cities, do not let students join in outdoor activities during breaks, fearing that they might get hurt. This is bad for the development of students' best qualities.
What the primary school in Fuzhou doing is worth praising. Doing chores can put a sense of responsibility (责任感) into students' minds and teach them the spirit of rules as well as teamwork. Also, it can make students' in-school experiences more meaningful.
From the Other Side
Lara and Tara are twins. They look like each other, but they are very different in everything else. For example, hot food is Lara's favorite, and Tara has a sweet choice.
However, this isn't the problem with the twin girls. They always argues that the opposite one was wrong. , while Tara thought mornings were fresh and it was difficult to stay up till midnight.
To put an end to their fights, their parents decided to create a small drama. They wanted the girls to understand that they were both correct from their own point of view. Their parents covered the girl's eyes with black ribbons (带、条), and brought them to the dining room. Lara was asked to stand on one side of the board and Tara on the other. They couldn't see the other side of it. When the ribbons were taken away, they were surprised to see a huge board between them.
Now, their father asked Lara, "What's the color of the board?" She replied, "It's black!" She replied, "It's white!" The two girls began to argue again. While Lara was confident it was black, Tara was sure it was white. Then, they were asked to exchange (交换) their places. They couldn't believe their eyes. Tara, who insisted (坚持) it was a white board, saw a black one. Similarly, Lara, who argued the board was black, was surprised to see a white one. They understood that each of them was right in her own view. Most of us are like Lara and Tara. We are right most times, but insist that others are wrong!
A. They have different ideas. B. For years, their arguments continued. C. Their mother asked Tara the same question. D. In the room, a big board was placed in the middle. E. Lara thought it was terrible to get up early in the morning. |
It's early in the morningand the alarm clock has already rung several time. You have to pull yourselfout of bed and rush to school because you're afraid of being late for school.
As a school student, this is probably a commonexperience for you. But thanks to new rules, students in Zhejiang andHeilongjiang provinces can now stay in bed longer than before.
On Feb 23, the Zhejiang Department of Educationannounced (宣布) a new rule that asksprimary schools to start school later. According to the rule, start times couldbe different among different grades, with students in Grade 1 and 2 starting noearlier than 8:30 am.
A similar guideline (指导方针) was announced by the education department in HeilongjiangProvince on Feb 24. Students from all primary and junior high schools in theprovince have been required (要求) to arrive at school noearlier than 8 am.
According to a 2016 study by the ZhejiangDepartment of Education, half students in Grade 4 slept nine hours or more anight, while the enough sleep time for primary students in 10 hours.
"I welcome the new rule so much. It is sucha wonderful rule that gives my son enough time for breakfast, which isnecessary for his health and growth", a mother named Xu Li said. She isfrom Hangzhou and his son is in Grade 1. These changes have received muchpraise as they make students get enough sleep and enough time for breakfast.
Pushing back school times isn't unique (唯一的) to China. In the United States, schools in at least 21 statesbegan to start school later in 2017, as studies have shown that later schoolstart times could be good for students' development.
