Now and then we get ill. Then we usually go to a doctor. Doctor knows a lot about what can makes us ill. They may give us some medicine to take. The medicine often makes us well again.
But sometimes the doctor's medicine doesn't work. A sick person does not get well. The pain will not go away. This happened to Jimmy. He was in hospital, but he was not getting well. Then he found a new "doctor" inside himself. This "doctor" was his own sense of humor (幽默). He saw funny films. He read funny books. And then something wonderful happened. Laughing took away his pain. Then he was able to sleep and rest. His own happy feeling helped him to feel well again. He said laughing was his best "medicine". His doctor thought so, too.
Another man, Mario, was ill. And he had a terrible pain in his back. The doctor could not stop it. So the man began to "picture" his pain. In his head he "drew" a picture of a dog. He imagined it was a real dog. And he made friends with the dog. And his pain went away!
These stories may surprise you. But more and more people are getting well in this way. So visit the "doctor" inside your own head and you can stay happy and well.

You are the only child in your family. Your parents, grandparents and relatives all love you. How would things be different?
You could play with him or her. You could talk about lots of things and tell your secrets to them. But there could be hard times, too. You may fight. You may pull each other's hair. You may compete for your parents' attention, food, the bathroom and even TV! Life with a sister or a brother may be colorful!
US psychologists (心理学家) Kevin Leman says the birth order helps shape children's personalities (性格). According to Leman, parents are usually nervous and strict with their first child. They set high goals for them. They are also often confident (自信的) people.
But for late-born kids, parents are usually more relaxed. They are often more creative. They also try to be funny, so they can get attention from their parents.
A. Even the birth order can make a difference. B. So the eldest child in a family wants to be perfect and successful. C. But what if you had a sister or a brother. D. So the younger children have fewer rules. E. You may even take care of each other. |
Here is the story of how the teddy bear was born.
Nearly 100 years ago, President Teddy Roosevelt (罗斯福) went on a bear hunt. He enjoyed (hunt) in the woods. Because he was the president of the USA, the people who organized the hunt wanted to make him (succeed).
But after three days of walking and climbing and riding, no bears (find)! The next day the hunt guide and his hunting dogs finally found an old bear. The dogs and the guide followed the bear for quite a distance until the bear was too tired (run). The dogs attacked and hurt the old bear. To stop it from running away, the guide tied the bear to a tree and called for the President. Here was a bear for him to shoot! President Roosevelt came, looked at the poor old bear and said "No". He ordered that they should let the old bear (go).
Mr. Berryman, a cartoonist (漫画家), heard of this story. He drew a cartoon showing how the President refused to shoot the bear while hunting. Mr. Michtom, owner of a toy store, (come) up with an idea by the cartoon. He and his wife made a toy bear and put it in his toy store window. Next to it was a copy of the cartoon. To his surprise, many people showed great interest in the toy and hoped to own one. He asked for and received President Roosevelt's permission to use his name for the bear, and the teddy bear was born!
Since then the toy bear (be) famous around the world and popular with children!
No one knows who invented the pencilsor when it happened. A Swiss described a pencil in a book in 1565. He said itwas a piece of wood with lead (铅) inside it. Pencils weren't popular. Then, in 1795, someone startedmaking pencils from graphite (石墨), and they became verypopular. Today, people still make pencils in the same way. They put it inside apiece of wood. One pencil can write 50, 000 English words or make a line 55kilometers long.
Before the pencils were widely used, people used bird feathers (羽毛) as pens. When people wrote with feather pens, they had to put thepoint into ink after every few letters. Next, someone invented a fountain pen(自来水笔) that could hold ink inside it. A fountain pen can write a few pagesbefore you have to fill it again.
Two brothers, Ladislao and George Biro, invented the ballpoint pen (圆珠笔) that we all use today. They left their country Hungary (匈牙利) and started making ballpoint pens in England in 1943, during WorldWar II. Later, a French company called Bic bought the Biro brothers' company. Some people call the ballpoint pens "Bics." Australians callthem"biros." Whatever we call them, we use them every day.
