When Henry came home from the office last Thursday night, he saw a note from his wife on the kitchen table. "Henry, "the note said, "my mother isn't well and I am going home to be with her for a few days. There are a few things that ought to be done while I am away. First, would you please stop at the shoe repairman's and get my brown shoes? And go to the supermarket and get some coffee, milk and butter. When you get home, please telephone Mary and tell her I won't be able to go to her party tomorrow evening. Tell her why I can't come. There are three things that must be done before you go to work tomorrow morning:Leave a note for the milkman asking for just one quart of milk, not two; put the garbage in the backyard; give the dog something to eat. On Saturday, cut the grass in the backyard. The newspaper boy will come on Saturday afternoon. Be sure to give him money. ”
Mrs. Weeks was reading a newspaper story to her class. The story said: Were you ever in a hospital when you were small? How did you feel? The doctors in Children's Hospital are asking for money for children's toys. Some children in the hospital must stay in bed for many weeks, so toys are needed to keep these sick children happy and quiet. Money for them can be sent to the hospital.
After Mrs. Weeks read the story, she said, “This story gave me an idea.”
“You want us to bring some money for the toys.”“We could bring some of our own toys for the children in the hospital." said the boys and girls one after another.
“Well, your ideas would be nice,” Mrs. Weeks said, “but mine is different.”
“We could make some toys,” shouted one of them.
Mrs. Weeks smiled. “Do you think you could make toys?” she asked.
“Yes, yes,” the whole class answered.
“Great! Let's begin to make toys tomorrow, said Mrs. Weeks.
On Saturday afternoon, Mrs. Weeks took the children to the hospital with the toys made by her students. The children in the hospital felt very happy to see the toys. The children in the class felt happy, too.
Dangerous situations called for help on Tuesday when rainstorms hit Phoenix, Arizona. The storm brought several inches(英寸) of rain in a short time. The National Weather Service reported the rainfall was more than the area had all last summer.
Rain season in Arizona runs from June to September, bringing with it terrible storms with heavy rain and heavy winds. Because the desert around Phoenix experiences little rain most of the year, the water had nowhere to go when heavy rain started hitting the area on Tuesday.
Up to 8 inches of rain fell by midday in some of the mountain areas along the main north-south freeway in Arizona. The town of New River which is outside of Phoenix, got hit with nearly 5 inches of rain from the storm. Places were flooding fast, and people tried to avoid the dangers that followed.
"We had many calls about the flooding of roads, buildings and homes, asking for help. We've got our men jumping from one car to the next. We worked all day and night without a break," Phoenix Fire Captain(队长), Benjamin Santillan said.
A helicopter(直升机) group saved two women and three dogs from a home outside of Phoenix that had been surrounded(包围) by moving water. Some drivers in cars were pulled out and saved by firefighters. People in schools and parks were sent to safe places.
A famous scientist made some great inventions. A newspaper reporter asked him why he thought he was able to be so much more creative than other persons. What made him so successful and different from others?
He said it all came from an experience with his mother when he was about two years old. when he lost his control on the bottle and it fell, pouring the milk all over the kitchen floor — a sea of milk!
His mother didn't shout at him, instead, she said, "Robert, what a great and wonderful mess you have made!. Well, something bad had happened. Would you like to get down and play in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up?"
Indeed, he did. After a few minutes, his mother said, "You know, Robert, whenever you make a mess like this, you have to clean it up? We could use a sponge(海绵)or a towel. Which I do you prefer?" He chose the sponge and together they cleaned up the spilled(溅出的) milk.
His mother then said, "You know, what we have here is a failed experiment in how to carry a big milk bottle with two small hands. and see if you can find a way to carry it without dropping it." In the end, the little boy learned how to carry the bottle without dropping it. What a wonderful lesson!
A. Let's go out and fill the bottle with water B. What really have you done C. He tried to move a bottle of milk from the refrigerator D. So, how would you like to do that E. I have never seen such a huge pool of milk |

Have you ever been to Thailand? And what did you learn about Thai people? After traveling Thailand for over a month, I've seen and learnt quite a few things not just about the country, but also about people. Here are some things that I've learnt about Thai people.
They always give you the warmest, friendliest smile if you smile first.
Thai people are often very , and many of them smile at you in the street. But most of the times, they look at you. If your meet and you smile, then they smile back right away. If you don't smile, however, do they. My experience is that they smile more brightly than you when you smile first.
No matter(无论) early you get up in the morning, most people are already awake and working. It's true that I'm an early bird. But no matter when I get up, it feels like Thai people have been awake for just a little than me. They are already in their shops, at the markets or in the factories I get up. It's not that Thai people never sleep; they just don't sleep the way we do.
When it comes to transport, there's no such thing as “full”.
The buses are always in Thailand. Even if some kids have to hang (悬挂)off the end of the bus, there is still space more people. Once we had about 33 people in a very small bus. It was crazy!
What has two wheels(轮子), runs on human energy and is red, pink, blue or any other color? A bicycle.
①In the US, the number of people who bike (骑自行车)in and around the city has increased. More people bike to work, to the store or to go to the movies. There are more bike lanes(车道),bike signs, bike shops and there is even a popular bike idea, Capital Bikeshare, which allows people to rent(租用) bikes to get from place to place.
• Kids also like biking to school.
②"In winter we walk, and in the rest of the seasons we ride our bikes, " Olivia Steckler, 8, said. She studies in a public school in Northeast Washington.
"It makes me feel happy," she said about biking. It takes her about 15 minutes to ride from home to school.
Olivia is one of many kids in Washington, especially in the Capitol Hill area, who bike to school with an adult.
Malia Weedon, 8, a third grader at Maury Elementary School, likes to bike because it's faster than walking. It takes her about five minutes to get to school on her bike. She's been biking to school for several years now and likes to race her little brother, William,
Jennifer Hefferan, whose job is to make sure kids in Washington get to school safely, said that more people are calling her to ask about bike safety for kids. She also said that schools ask for more bike racks (自行车停放架)almost every day.
