Long long ago, there was a swan (天鹅) with golden feathers. She lived in a lake. A woman lived in a small house 1the lake with her two daughters. They were very poor. They worked hard all year round,2still, they lived a hard life and sometimes they even didn't have enough 3to buy food.
The swan was 4to see that. She said to herself, “I'll give one of my5to them each day, then they can live a happy life with the money selling my feathers.” That evening, she 6to the poor woman's house and left a golden feather on the table without saying7. From then on, the swan came every day and gave them a feather. The woman was very happy because their life was much8than before.
But day after day, the woman became greedy(贪婪).She said to her9. “The swan may fly away one day. If so, we will be poor again. We should take all10feathers if she comes next time.”
“Oh, no, Mom!” cried the daughters, “This will 11the swan. She helps us a lot!” But the mother wouldn't listen. When the 12came as usual, the mother caught her and took all her feathers. But suddenly, the golden feathers 13chicken feathers.
Then, the Golden Swan said, “Poor Mother, I came to 14you, but you wanted to kill me. Now, I am leaving and will 15come back. Never be greedy!” With these words, the swan left.
I Don't Have to Be Like Them(保持真我)
All students have to face their own problems when they are growing up. You may not think that having a good family is a problem. But for me , it was. I had to face the problem of being the youngest of the Smith girls.
We live in a small town in Pennsylvania, US. There are three girls in the Smith family, Amanda, Theresa and me . People often say things to me , like “ Oh, the three of you , you're such nice girls. Your sisters are so pretty and so thin! You're really nothing like them .” That made me sad.
At school ,all of my teachers had taught my sisters . On the first day of school ,they said , “Oh , the youngest of the three! I hope you're just like your sisters. They're such wonderful students.”
People always compared(比较) me with my sisters . So I couldn't help comparing myself with them ,too. Theresa was smarter(更聪明的), Amanda was prettier . I began to work hard to be more like them .What my sisters did , I did , too. At last , I became drum major(主鼓手)of our school 's marching band . Both Amanda and Theresa had been drum majors . I became editor of the school's newspaper . Theresa had been the editor two years before.
But last year, Amanda went to college(大学) , and Theresa went to high school . Now I'm by myself at junior high . Everyone knows me , because I'm the drum major and the newspaper's editor .
Now I don't feel like a Smith girl any more , I feel like myself . I'm proud of doing all of the same great things that my sisters did . But the best thing I did was to learn to stop comparing myself with them .
A young man went to a car shop. He was wearing rubber boots(橡胶靴子) and a dirty jacket. He needed a haircut(理发) very much. The young man looked at an expensive car carefully and then asked the shop owner(店主), “How much is this car?” “Nine thousand two hundred and eighteen,” the owner answered. “I want sixteen of them,” the young man said. The shop owner smiled coldly. He showed the door to the young man.
In another shop on the other side of the street the business was done(生意做成了). The young man took money out of his pocket and paid for the cars. He said the cars were for himself and his friends were. Each of them wanted to get one. He said that he and his friends were working on a fishing-boat. “We have got much money this season,” the young man said, “and we want to buy cars. ”

Over the years I've been teaching kids about a simple but powerful spirit—the ant philosophy (哲学). I think we should study ants.
Ants have an amazing four-part philosophy, and here is the first part:they never give up. That's a good philosophy. If they're headed somewhere and you try to stop them, they'll look for another way. They'll climb over, and they'll climb around. They keep looking for another way. What a neat philosophy to never quit looking for a way to get where they'd like to go.
Second, ants think winter all summer. That's an important view. You can't be so naive (无知的) as to think summer will last forever. So ants are gathering their winter food in summer. An ancient story says, “Don't build your house on the sand in summer.” There is some reason in what it says. It is important to think ahead. In summer, you've to think about the storm. You've got to think about rocks when you enjoy the sand and sun.
The third part of the ant philosophy is that ants think summer all winter. That is so important. During the winter, ants remind themselves, “This won't last long;we'll soon be out of here.” And on the first warm day, the ants are out. If it turns cold again, they'll go back, but then they come out again if it is warm. They can't wait to get out.
And here is the last part of the ant philosophy. How much will an ant gather during the summer to prepare for the winter? All that he possibly can. What an incredible (难以置信的) philosophy, the “all-that-you-possibly-can” philosophy.
What a great philosophy to have the ant philosophy! Never give up, look ahead, stay active and do all you can.
