Alice Hamilton, 17
I'm going to help the Forest Centre build new hiking paths in the mountains. It's going to be terrific—I'll spend the whole summer living in the tent and breathing the clean mountain air. I'm going to sleep under the stars. It'll be a nice sport, and I'll be able to do something good at the same time.
Jason Moore, 18
This summer, I'm going to volunteer with Special House Program. They build good, low cost houses and sell them to families that are not very rich. They'll teach me what to do, so I'll help people and also have a chance to learn how to build houses.
Trish Anderson, 16
I'm going to teach kids who have trouble reading. I'll work for a program called “Reading for Life”. Every day, I'm going to help kids choose and read books that they like. I want to be a teacher and I love children and reading, so this is going to be a great experience for me.
What is the most important thing in the world? I think it is health. You can take away our money, house, car, or even our clothes and we can survive. But if our health were taken away, we would surely die. That is why we always try to eat in a healthy way and exercise regularly. In order to eat healthily, I usually avoid(避免) eating food high in fat, like French fries or cookies. I eat little meat. I eat a lot of vegetables and fresh fruits. Taking exercise every day helps us build a strong body. Regular exercise is an important part of keeping me healthy. What's more, I think friends are an important part of our health. Many studies show that people with a wide range of social contacts(社会交往) get sick less than those who don't. I always feel better when I am with friends than when I am atone. When I am with my friends, I always laugh. Laughing is also an important part of health. I like to laugh with my friends. By eating properly and exercising regularly, I can keep my body at a proper weight and keep healthy. By spending time with my friends, I can keep my mind as well as my body happy. These things sound easy to do, but not many people can manage them. I think a strong will is necessary if we want to keep healthy.
Tom was an eight-year-old boy. He was sick to death of school because he didn't want to do his homework. He was always looking for excuses not to do it. When he sneezed(打喷嚏)or had a headache, he told his mom he was seriously ill and he couldn't do his homework. Though Tom's mom was angry, she didn't know how to deal with him. Most of the time, Tom went to school without finishing his homework. Even though he finished his homework indeed, he usually did it very carelessly.
One Thursday evening, Tom told his mom that he couldn't do his homework because he was having a fever. After his mom took his temperature, she realized that Tom didn't tell the truth. So he had to do his homework. To his mom's surprise, the light in Tom's bedroom was still on at midnight. His mom opened the door quietly and found Tom was already asleep. His homework was only half completed.
The next morning, Tom went to school as usual. He left his homework at home on purpose. When Tom returned home from school, his mom asked,“Did your teacher punish you today? I know you didn't finish your homework last night.”
“No, mom.”Tom answered.
“How did you make it?”his mom asked him.“What did you say to the teacher?”
“I told my teacher that an accident happened to me this morning.”
“What?”Tom's mom looked at him with eyes wide.
“The school bus fell into the pool on my way to school.”Tom continued.“I climbed out of the pool, but my homework didn't climb out of the pool.”
“______”Tom's mom said.
“Of course, I don't.” Tom said. “But my teacher doesn't know that.”
Everyone needs friends. We all like to feel close to someone. It is nice to have a friend to talk, laugh, and do things with. We don't always want people around. We will feel lonely if we never have a friend.
Friends sometimes don't get on well. Most of the time they will make up and become friends again. When friends move away, we feel very sad. Then we call them or write to them. We can even see them again someday. It's surprising to find out how much we like new people when we get to know them.
There's more good news for people who have friends. They live longer than people who don't. Why? It could be that they are happier. Or it could be just knowing that someone cares. If someone cares about you, you'll take better care of yourself.
A. Of course, we can also make new friends. B. We miss them very much. C. Being happy helps you stay healthy. D. It doesn't mean they don't like each other. E. However, sometimes we need to be alone. |

It was Jimmy's birthday, and he was five years old. He got a lot of nice birthday gifts from his family, and one of them was a beautiful drum. "Who gave him that thing?" Jimmy's father asked when he saw it. "My father did," answered Jimmy's mother. Jimmy liked his drum very much. He made a terrible noise with it, but his father didn't mind. He was working during the day and Jimmy was already in bed when he got home in the evening, so he couldn't hear the noise. But one of the neighbors(邻居) didn't like the noise at all, so a few days later, she took a knife and went to Jimmy's house while he was hitting his drum. She said to him, "Hello, Jimmy, there is something very nice inside your drum. Here is a knife. Open the drum and let's find it. ""No, I know there isn't anything in it, "said the boy.
