Easy to make and cheap to buy, instant noodles (方便面) are popular in China. But sales of instant noodles continue to fall these years. So what's going on? Here are some possible reasons.
People want better food.
Instant noodles are very easy to cook. However, Chinese people's lives have improved a lot. More and more people are interested in life quality instead of just having a full stomach.
Trains
About 20 years ago, people usually ate instant noodles during long train journeys in China. But now trains run faster and faster and people have more choices about food on the train.
Ordering food online
Many apps on the phone can offer food delivery (递送) to your home, school, office or wherever you are. These meals are more delicious than instant noodles.
Last weekend, I took Lucy to a park, where she discovered a track (小路) with large bumps (凸块) and sharp turns. At first, I thought Lucy was able to ride her bike along the track, but she quickly found that her bike was too low to the ground and kept getting stuck on top of the bumps.
Lucy looked at me with fear because she was still a biking newbie (新手). I tried to encourage her too, but really, I was thinking—this is going to be terrible. Not because I thought she would get hurt. More because I thought she wouldn't be able to pick up enough speed to balance, then get really discouraged, and give up quickly. I imagined her throwing her bicycle to the ground and then crying all the way home.
But I was only half right. Lucy did have a lot of trouble riding the bike. She couldn't find her balance. She fell many times. At one point, she almost started crying because other younger kids were getting angry that she was slowing everyone else down. But she did not give up. She kept picking herself up and trying again. She even took the bike off the track and into the main park in order to practice pushing off and picking up speed on a flat (平坦的) ground. When she felt more confident, she came back. Then she did it over and over again until she finally reached her goal of going around the whole track without falling once. Then she didn't want to leave, and everyone was cheering her on.
This was not a day that ended terribly. It was a day when Lucy learned that holding-on spirit pays off.

Phone |
The first telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. It made communications easier. But the telephone were only fixed in post offices. People had to go there to make calls to faraway people and the fees were very high. Later, a cell phone was developed in 1973 in America. It was one of the most useful inventions. People can use cell phones to communicate with others much more easily. They can take them anywhere to make private calls, even vision calls(可视电话), cell phones have many other functions, such as sending messages, taking photos and reading online. |
TV |
The first TV set was invented by an English scientist, John Baird, in 1926. The invention helped people watch films at home instead of going to the cinema as before. At first, TV sets only broadcast black-white pictures. Several years later, colored TV sets made the pictures lively. However, they were heavy and thick, so it was difficult to move them. Then, digital TV sets came into being. They are light and thin. Many TV programs are available(可获得的) at any time. At present, people can use the IPTV(网络电视) to record and replay programs. |
Computer |
The first modern computer was invented in America in 1946. It was as big as a room. It improved the speed and exactitude of calculation(计算). In the 1950s, desktop computers were invented in the same country. They became smaller and could be put on the desk. Since then, they have become very important in many fields of work and leisure. Before the 1970s, the computers were single. It was the Internet that joined the computers into a big family, so they could share information with one another. Around 1985, laptops were developed in Japan. They were much smaller and could be put on people's laps. They were light and easy to take. |
What's the Deal with Sleep
You go to bed at night, close your eyes, and go to sleep. Actually, when you fall asleep, you go through the four stages of the sleep cycle. Let's explore what happens.
Stage 1. When you feel yourself becoming sleepy. Your muscles begin to relax and your brain activity slows down. Your eye movements are slow. It lasts several minutes and you can be woken up easily.
Stage 2. you won't wake up easily. The slow eye movements continue and your brain waves slow down even more. Your body temperature goes down and your heart rate slows down.
Stage 3 is known as deep sleep. It's more difficult for you to be woken up. So all those sleepwalkers out there may not actually remember doing anything strange in their sleep the next day.
Finally, you move into REM( rapid eye movement). This is caused by certain brain activity. You may have vivid dreams during this stage. Your waves are more active, and they're similar to when you're awake. It's easier to wake you up, but you may feel sleepy.
Once your REM phase is over, the cycle starts all over again. Stage 1 and 2 are considered light sleep, while Stage 3 is deep sleep. You'll go through about four or five of these cycles each night, depending on how long you sleep.
A. This is when your sleep becomes a bit deeper. B. Have you ever wondered how exactly sleep works? C. A complete sleep cycle lasts between 90 and 110 minutes. D. During the REM stage, your eyes move quickly beneath your closed eyelids. E. Although you are sleeping deeply, this is when sleepwalking or sleep talking occurs. |
The Silk Road is the name of different roads that long ago connected Europe, Africa and Asia.
People reached these different places along these roads. Scientists believe people began to travel along the Silk Road about 3,000 years ago. By the time the Chinese silk trade became important in the world, the Silk Road had covered almost 6,500 kilometers. It stretched from Rome to China, which is from the West to the Far East.
Merchants(商人) travelling along the Silk Road carried silk, of course. They also carried and traded spices, cloth, gold and so on.
During its busiest period, the Silk Road allowed people from many different cultures and countries to meet each other and mix. It also allowed the sharing of precious goods and new ideas. These included people and trading goods from Armenian, Indian, Chinese and other areas. All these people travelled the Silk Road, and they shared goods, stories, languages, and cultures.
In modern times, the old Silk Road routes are still used, but now they are crossed by trains instead of camels. There is even a Silk Road Museum in Jiuquan in China. It has over 35,000 objects from all along the Silk Road. In this way, China protects the history of many countries and peoples.

If L. A.(Los Angeles) is the movie center of the world, Universal Studios (环球影城) is the movie center of L. A. They have many things for visitors. We took a little train to go on a trip in the studio. We saw many famous characters in the movies there. It felt so real that I was even scared when the 3D monkey came for us. We also learnt a lot about how Universal Studios made the movies there.
When you are in L. A., you must go to Disneyland. With lovely animals, exciting shows and fun buildings, Disney is the best place for children and their family. I tried many interesting rides there. The best part of the day was the Aladdin show. It's about the story of the young man Aladdin who got a magic lamp to help him realize his dream.
Our last stop in L. A. is Kodak Theater. That's the place to have the Oscars. So there are many things about famous movie stars. It was exciting!
At the end of the day, my mom sadly fell ill, so we spent the night at the hospital. We couldn't go on our trip, but I've seen the best of L. A. It was a wonderful trip!
