Today our class visited the Museum ofNatural History. We went to see the1show.At first I wasn't2 in seeing dinosaur skeletons (骨骼). Why would anyone want3 about something that's not around any more?
First we walked4 a big room. I saw the skeleton of a largeanimal. It almost5 the room. Two huge, dark holes6 its head looked at me. It was Dinosaur Sue.
Our guide told7 all about Sue. He told us to look at her8.Sue had 60 teeth. Her teeth were long and sharp. One tooth looked as9 as my school ruler. The guide said thedinosaur's teeth showed that she was a meat eater.
As I looked at it, I wondered what thedinosaur had looked10 when it was alive. No one knows what11 dinosaurs were, but I pictured it as brownish grey.I could see it going through the grass and trees searching for food.
Suddenly I realized that the skeleton had12belonged(属于) to a living animal that used to live on Earth. It made me think aboutother13. Now I14 why people want to learn about these animals.15 would be very exciting to find a dinosaurskeleton.
Traditional foods also show a new year of good luck and good health:
An English Christmas dinner has a meal of turkey, and it also includes pies and plum puddings(李子布丁). In Germany, Christmas is celebrated with bread, cookies and cakes, which are made like Christmas trees. In France, Christmas dessert is a cake filled with butter cream. In southern parts of India, there is a three-day festival in mid-January called Pongal. It includes rice and a dish of rice cooked with sugar that is shared with families and friends. Japan celebrates New Year with a seven-day festival. It begins from January 1st. Food is prepared before the festival so people don't need to cook during the festival. On New Year's Day, various dishes called Osechi ryori(御节料理) are served — each dish is a wish for the New Year.
In most Asian countries, the New Year begins with the first full moon of the first Chinese Lunar month. Each place has its special food to welcome the coming year: People in China prepare their food ahead of time to avoid the possibility that using a knife during New Year's time might "cut luck", Foods with lucky names are popular, such as fish, which sounds like "surplus(剩余)"
As Amy rounded the corner across the hall from her classroom, she met with a tall boy from the fifth grade running in the opposite direction.
"Watch it, dwarf(矮子)," the boy shouted, as he moved quickly around the little third grader. Then, the boy took hold of his right leg and imitated(模仿) the way Amy limped(跛行) when she walked.
Amy closed her eyes for a moment.
"Ignore(忽视) him!" she told herself as she headed for her classroom.
It wasn't as if he were the only one. It seemed that ever since Amy started the third grade, someone teased her every single day. Kids teased her about her speech or her limping. Amy was tired of it. Sometimes, even in a classroom full of other students, the teasing made her feel lonely.
Back home at the dinner table that evening, Amy was quiet. Her mother knew that things were not going well at school. That's why she was happy to have some exciting news to share with her daughter.
"There's a Christmas Wish Contest on the newspaper," Amy's mom said. "Write a letter to Santa Claus and you might win a prize."
Out came the pencil and paper and Amy went to work on her letter. She wrote:
Dear Santa Claus,
My name is Amy. I am 9 years old. I have a problem at school. Can you help me, Santa? Kids laugh at me because of the way I walk and run and talk. I have cerebral palsy(大脑性瘫痪). I just want one day where no one laughs at me or makes fun of me.
Love,
Amy
The next day, a picture of Amy and her letter to Santa Clause made the front page of the News Sentinel. The little girl's story spread quickly. She asked for such a simple, yet unusual Christmas gift just one day without teasing.
Many people thanked Amy for being brave enough to speak up. Others encouraged her to ignore teasing and to carry her head high.
Amy did get her wish of a special day without teasing. Teachers and students talked together about how bad teasing could make others feel.
What's the most important thing for athletes (运动员) to win? Training hard? Having an excellent coach? Never giving up? Probably these are all very important, but according to a new book, the most important thing is getting enough sleep.
This book is Sleep to Win! by Dr. James Maas and Haley Davis. In this book, you can find out how getting more sleep helped fifteen-year-old Sarah Hughes win an Olympic gold medal. She said the biggest change she made in her training for the Olympics was getting more sleep. Sleep to Win! also gives examples of other professional athletes as well as student athletes becoming faster runners because of getting more sleep. For example, after Amber Way, a high school student in Michigan, changed her sleeping time from seven to over nine hours each night, her running speed increased a lot. She finally became the state champion (州冠军) after breaking five school records.
Dr. Haley Davis explained, "Why is sleeping so helpful? The reason is that teenagers whose bodies are still growing need to get about 9.25 hours of sleep each night. That's about two hours more than most American teenagers are getting. Enough sleep helps the brain work properly. While teenagers are sleeping, their brains are preparing for the next day. A good night's sleep can help them pay attention, make decisions and be creative."
There is a sign at a Korean university asking tourists not to step into the grass to take photos. The sign is not written in Korean or English; it is written in Chinese.
These signs, and signs in other countries warning Chinese tourists about their behavior, have shamed many Chinese who worry about the image(形象) of the country.
Over 70 million Chinese tourists made overseas trips last year and spent $102 billion, more than the $84 billion spent by American and German tourists. For many Chinese tourists, it was their first trip abroad and they didn't know about foreign ways. And some of these tourists took their bad habits from China with them.
Wang Yang, a Chinese deputy prime minister(国务院副总理), said, "They(the tourists) speak loudly in public, carve words or numbers on tourist attractions, cross the road when the traffic lights are still red and spit anywhere. It damages(毁坏) the image of the Chinese people and has a very bad influence."
Before you travel to a foreign country, it's important to learn some things about the country and its culture. You are guests in the country and it's important to respect(尊重) your hosts. As more and more Chinese visit foreign countries, their behavior will certainly change and those shameful signs will, hopefully, disappear.
