It was so close to noon on December 21st 1943, in the Tanana River Valley of Alaska, not far from the Arctic Circle, when Crane on the Iceberg Inez was preparing to jump out of his plane. Wind cried and he was in the fall. Before Crane realized what was happening, he found himself1on a frozen stream. The plane that he had to2was burning, two miles away, which would be good3a rescue. However, the fire also meant the supplies-food, sleeping bags, signal flames, a gun-were lost. Still, he shouted out for any sign of life.4 , there was nobody else. Crane tried to take a few steps, but the thick snow made his walking hard. And to make things5 , a broken foot made it nearly impossible to reach the crash site before nightfall. He knew he mustn't lose his6and began to think of the things he could do.
It was minus60 degrees Fahrenheit. Crane knew he needed to start a fire and get it going,7he might not last the night. His fingers were dead, but he managed to light a match. The little flame wasn't enough to catch. He tried another three matches but they did nothing except burn his fingertips. At that moment, he remembered hearing from his father days ago. So with the help of the8 , a fire rose up. The 9match worked. The journey back was unexpectedly difficult. One of his feet became so large that he could hardly put on his shoe. He walked at the best speed that he could manage although he was in great pain. Luckily, the 23-year-old10who had a strong will succeeded in keeping himself away from varied kinds of danger until help arrived 81 days later.
Mick Polly, an owner of a toy store, lives with his teenage daughter Carolina in Kentucky. He is known as the Bike Man. Over the past five years, Mick has built hundreds of bikes for needy kids.
One day in 2012, a 13yearold boy with a broken bike walked by Mick's house. "I was working in my garage, and he asked if I could fix it," says Mick, now 53.
The boy's bike had a broken wheel. Mick sent a post on Facebook, asking his friends if they had the needed part. One friend saw the post and gave away two used bikes. Mick took parts from each to build a new set of wheels for the boy.
Soon after, Mick repaired a bike for the boy's brother and fixed one for his sister. Word spread, and during the year, he had fixed up lots of bikes for local kids whose parents were not able to afford new ones.
"People are throwing away bikes day and night," says Mick.
Mick puts the bikes and bike parts in his garage. "I take off the good tires or the handlebars or the seats and use them," he says.
Up to now, the bike man has repaired hundreds of bikes and given away nearly 700 newly repaired bikes. They're free, but the kids must agree on two things: They have to learn how to put waste things to good use and they have to try their best to study in school.
If a kid's grades are low, Mick requires a teacher's note "saying that you're doing your best". Mick also hopes the bikes will get kids off the sofa. "When I was growing up, we all rode our bikes," he says. "Hopefully, these kids can get some exercise."
①To have a rest in the sofa. ②To study hard.
③To recycle waste things. ④To get high marks.
⑤To exercise more. ⑥To learn to repair bikes.
Have you ever wanted to achieve a goal and ended up doing lots of research on how to achieve it? As you learned more and more, it seemed you knew less and less. That is because when you learned a new concept, you found that there was a lot more to know about it.
Usually, people think they need to get more and more information before trying a new idea. There is nothing wrong with learning a lot, but when you let learning get in the way of doing, you will never get going.
One of the best ways to learn is to take action and learn from the results that you get from those actions. Don't be afraid of not being perfect and just take the first step. You will go further than those who are still in preparation. It's good to be prepared, but overpreparation in trying to reach a goal won't get you results. The knowledge and skills that you will need will be picked up along the way.
Learning more is great but if all you're doing is learning and not taking action, it's time to change that. Just take the first step.
At some point in life, many people develop a mental problem. While most people get over it, for others, it doesn't go away easily.
The WHO says that about 20 percent of teenagers worldwide suffer from mental illness. The number of teenagers with mental illness around the world has increased by half by 2020. It becomes one of the main causes of illness, and even death.
In China, the picture isn't bright, either. About one tenth of teenagers under the age of 17 have a mental health challenge.
The world is changing fast. Study and relationships have always caused stress, but today the stress is much higher than before, the WHO said.
A research centre in Oxford University says that young people today have big stresses at school. For example, they experience bullying . In a 2017 report, the centre noted that the Internet was a special source of stress. Online, young people often see "messages about perfection" and this causes the young "great uncertainty about their futures", says the centre.
Also, according to China Daily, Chinese people don't ask for help with their mental problems. They fear that others will think less of them if they say that they are in mental trouble. Elaine Peng, a US mental health educator, makes a similar point. And in the UK, over three quarters of young people believe their mental problems have a social stigma. It is reported in 2017 that a quarter of young UK people wouldn't ask for help if they developed a mental problem.
Young people who don't ask for help for their condition may be creating problems for themselves in the future. Elaine Peng warned that, "If we hide our mental health, it may remain a problem forever."
"My message for young people is, if you feel something is wrong within you—ask for help," he told China Daily.
