Like many high school graduates, Maggie Doyne didn't go straight to college. She decided to travel and arrived in western Nepal in 2006. A war had just ended there and left many children living on the streets. They were often forced to work at hard physical jobs for little money.
One day, while walking down a country road, Doyne saw a little girl breaking up rocks. She soon learned that 7yearold Hima sold the rocks to support her family. With deep sadness, she decided to pay Hima's tuition(学费) for school. Encouraged by the changes in the child, Doyne thought, "If we can help one child, why not 10?"
Doyne felt that the street children's greatest need was a home. She found a piece of land for sale and bought it with $5, 000 she saved from years of babysitting (当临时保姆). In 2008, the Kopila Valley Children's Home was set up. With the help from the community, another goal was reached in 2010-the Kopila Valley School. Over 350 children now attend the school and over 50 live in the home.
Today, Doyne lives in the home and is "mum" to the kids.
Children's Games in Ancient China
During ancient times, children didn't have much to enjoy themselves. However, they came up with interesting games to play in their childhood.
Kicking stone balls
During the Qing Dynasty, kicking a stone ball around was a popular game in the northern part of China, and it was often played in winter to keep warm.
Playing hideandseek
Hideandseek is a traditional game for children, popular round the nation. There are two ways to play: cover a child's eyes while other kids run around to tease(戏弄) him or, more commonly, others hide and one child must try to find them.
Flying kites
Kites have quite a long history. The earliest kites were made of wood, instead of paper. The three most famous kites are the Beijing kite, Tianjin kite and Weifang kite. Each has its own feature. For example, the birdshaped kite with long wings is a special kind of the Beijing kite.
Watching shadow plays (皮影戏)
The closest thing to watch a film during ancient times was going to see a shadow play. The artists control puppets (木偶) behind the screen and tell stories to the music.
Have you ever heard the phrase "You never get a second chance to make a first impression(印象)"? It may sound like an unusual piece of advice, but it is true-the first impression someone has about you when meeting you for the first time will probably influence how that person treats you or reacts to you in the future.
What is even more interesting is that the brain takes in all the information to create that first impression in about three seconds. When you meet someone for the first time,by the time you have stated your name or shaken hands, the other person has already formed an opinion about the kind of person you are.
So how do you make a good first impression? All things grown up tell you such as being polite, and being welldressed are very important. However, the most important tool for making a good first impression is your face.
Smiling, being responsive, and looking like you are happy will almost always leave a positive(积极的)impression on people, especially those who do not know you. Most people, generally speaking, are ready to smile back when they are smiled at.
Furthermore, smiling and being in a positive mood helps you to know and get a better understanding of new things. This means that you can possibly be friendlier to people you do not know and be more creative and able to solve problems more quickly. So if you ever need a reason to be happy, think about the wonderful people you might meet and impress with a cheerful smile.

Experts in nutrition(营养)suggest that we should eat at least five different kinds of vegetables and fruit a day. They are very necessary for our health and help our bodies work well. They can help reduce(减少)the risk of getting ill. There are a lot of vegetables and fruit to choose from and they taste delicious.
It's easy to buy our food from the local supermarket, so why do we go to the trouble of growing our own? Here are several good reasons:
You can pick and eat it at once. When you have tried it, you will agree that vegetables and fruit that are eaten straight from the garden taste better than anything you can buy in a supermarket.
You may want to cut down on your "food miles", the distance that a product has travelled before it reaches your kitchen. Many food packages are flown halfway across the earth.
Homegrown food is likely to be healthier. Food producers often use fertilizers(化肥)and pesticides(农药)which can end up in your food. If you grow your own, things are different. You might also choose to grow some traditional vegetables and fruit.
These often have more of the vitamins, minerals(矿物质)and protein(蛋白质)that keep you healthy.
And you can grow your own even if you only have a small backyard or a balcony(阳台). Some food can grow well in pots, including lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes and carrots. You can recycle plastic bottles and cups to grow something. Just make sure there are holes for drainage(排水)and a small plate under them to catch drops of water.
Happy gardening!

Before paper was invented, people wrote or drew on materials such as bamboo, silk, animal skin and wooden blocks.Writing materials were really expensive and few people (learn) to read., few people wrote. This all changed, thanks to a man named Cai Lun.
We know paper had already existed(存在)in China, but the process for producing it was difficult and the paper was of low quality. Cai Lun began experimenting(试验)with many different materials and different methods ( turn )those materials into paper. In the year 105, he made it from tree bark, bamboo, cloth rags and fishing nets. His paper was stronger and cheaper than any paper that had been made before.
With Cai Lun's papermaking method, Chinese culture grew more (rapid) over the next several centuries. That's because ideas were much easier to share and more people learned to read. The use paper spread abroad, helping other cultures record and spread (they) ideas. Today, Cai Lun is considered national hero in (Chinese). But the whole world should remember the (clever) Chinese papermaker in the world forever.
