"What's the matter, Bob?" asks Mrs. White, "Why do you look so sad?"
"Mum, I wish we can stay in New York. I have many friends there .We are new here, and I have no friend now." Bob says.
"You will soon make friends here," says Mrs. White, "Wait and see!" At this time, someone is knocking at the door. Mrs. White opens it .A woman with a nice smile stands there.
"Hello," she says, "I'm Mrs. Green, I live next door." "Come in, please," says Mrs. White, "Bob and I are so glad to see you. Do you want any help?" "Yes, I come here to ask for two eggs," says Mrs. Green, "I want to make a cake." "You may have the eggs," says Mrs. White, "but please sit down. Let's have coffee and talk a little, OK?"
In the afternoon, someone knocks at the door again. Mrs. White opens it. There stands a boy with a nice smile.
"My name is Tom," he says, "Mother gives you this cake and these two eggs."
"Well, thank you, Tom." Says Mrs. White, "Come in and meet my son, Bob." The two boys are about the same age.
"Let's play football, OK?" says Bob, "I have a little dog. It will play with us. " Tom finds it fun to play football. Soon they have great fun playing football.
"I'm glad you live next door," says Bob, "Now I have someone to play together." "I'm glad your mother wants two eggs," says Bob.
"She doesn't really want the eggs," Tom laughs, "She just wants to make friends with your mother!"
Then Bob laughs, too. "That's a funny way to make friends," he says, "but it's a nice way."
Nidhi Arora used to be the HR manager of a large Indian company. After sitting on lots of job interviews, she noticed a serious problem. Today's young people are very clever. They do well in exams. However, they know little about current affairs(时事). This is because they almost never read newspapers.
In Arora's opinion, understanding what is happening around the world is important. It helps young people know what they need to do: What does the world need? Could I create that?
However, there was another problem. The newspapers adults read use difficult language. None could be given to a child. Arora decided to make a four-page paper for kids on her own. With encouragement from many mothers, the Children's Post was born in 2017.
The paper covers a wide number of topics, including international affairs, environment, technology and history. Readers can also find puzzles, poems, short stories and cartoons in the paper. Arora has managed to put together a team of seven editors. The editors decide the content. Sometimes, they ask their readers what they want to read more of and change accordingly. The completed copy then reaches Arora for further edits. She makes sure the facts and grammar are correct and that the language is simple.
Today, the Children's Post is the only daily newspaper for children in India. More than 3,500 copies are sold every day. Arora is always thinking about improving her paper. She hopes every kid in India could develop the habit of reading newspapers.
What color are icebergs (冰山)? White or blue? Surprisingly, there are green icebergs in Antarctica (南极). Their unusual color has confused scientists for years. But scientists have finally solved the mystery of the green icebergs.
Icebergs are large pieces of ice in the sea. Icebergs form after breaking away from glaciers (冰川).
Most icebergs are white. There are also many icebergs in Antarctica that are blue. Glacial ice has a lot of small air bubbles (气泡). The icebergs appear to be blue because the air bubbles reflect blue light.
However, there are no air bubbles in green icebergs, which means these icebergs are made out of sea ice rather than glacial ice.
But why does sea ice look green? Scientists at the University of Washington, US, recently found the reason— iron oxide (氧化铁). It comes from rock dust found on the Antarctic mainland. After studying the green icebergs, scientists found that they have 500 times more iron than glacial ice. The iron comes from bedrock in the ocean. When glaciers grind (碾磨) against bedrock, a powder (粉末) that is rich in iron is created. The powder later mixes with ocean water, which then freezes as green sea ice, Stephen Warren from the university suggested.
This is an important finding because these green icebergs can deliver iron to far parts of the ocean. There, tiny sea plants use the iron as a nutrient (营养物). We thought green icebergs were interesting. But now they may actually be important.
A. English is widely used in China. B. It can also happen to other languages, such as French. C. For example, the vocabulary for cars and driving is very different. D. They say "Have you a storybook?" E. English in these two counties is different only in sound. F. Many expressions are also different in the two countries. |
American and British people both speak English of course. But sometimes it does not seem like the same language. In fact, there are some important differences between British English and American English.
Often, Americans don't say each word separately. They say several words together. Americans may say "I dunno" instead of "I don't know". Or they may say "Whaddya say?" instead of "What did you say?" However, the British are more careful in their speech. They usually say all the words and keep them separate.
Sound is not only the difference between British English and American English. Words sometimes have different meanings too. Americans drive trucks, but in England people drive lorries.
In England, if you are going to telephone your friends, you "phone them up". In America, you "give them a call".
There are also some differences in grammar. For example, Americans usually use the helping verb "do" when they ask a question. They say "Do you have a storybook?" But the British often leave out the helping verb.
Most languages are like this. Languages change over time. When people live in separate places, the languages change in different ways. This is what has happened to English. Many people in Canada speak French but their French is very different from the French of France.
