Hey, everyone. I'm WangXue. Our topic (话题) today is What do you think about it? If you have any opinions, welcome to share them. Thanks.

I think it is really noisy to set off firecrackers. Some people set them off at midnight. People nearby cannot sleep well. It also creates air pollution and lots of rubbish. So I think there is no need to set them off.

Setting off firecrackers is a tradition during Chinese festivals. People set them off to wish a happy new year. We cannot give it up.

I like traveling. But the virus has made this more dangerous. I have to stay at home during the winter holiday. I am so boring.

I think we can improve firecrackers. We cannot set them off freely because now they are dangerous. But if we can make them safer and better for the air, we wouldn't have to give them up.

I think we can use something else to replace them. For example, we can use LED fireworks instead. They are safer. Even kids can play with them.

    1. (1) Which of the following can be put in the blank "      " in the first text?
A . how to improve firecrackers B . where to set off firecrackers C . why we should set off firecrackers D . whether we should set off firecrackers
    2. (2) What's Li Qing's opinion?
A . Setting off firecrackers is a tradition. B . Improving firecrackers is a better way. C . Using LED fireworks instead of real ones. D . Setting off firecrackers causes many problems.
    3. (3) Whose topic is different from others?
      A . Shi Jia's. B . Liu Ran's. C . Zhang Qi's. D . Lin Yisong's.

Everyone in my class was afraid of Mrs. Lane, my maths teacher. She knew everything, especially about you. She likes tidiness. After class, one of us would walk down the rows with the wastebasket and we would put in our waste paper.

Once as a classmate collected our waste paper, Dave suddenly threw a paper ball into the basket about 4 feet away. Soon other kids followed excitedly. I also put up a beautiful shot. But the minute it left my fingers, Mrs. Lane called my name. I felt so terrible.

"Nice shot! I'd like to see more," she said. Mrs. Lane took me to the door. "Ten more shots from here. Every time you don't score a goal, you have one hour with me after school." The class cheered when I scored and groaned (叹气) when I failed. Finally, I made three shots and missed seven. It meant seven hours of one-on-one with Mrs. Lane, with one every afternoon. I simply accepted the fact that I'd never be happy again.

Finally, I understood why Mrs. Lane did this: I was new here. And I made only a few friends. Here's what happened: Whether I hit the wastebasket or not, this brought my classmates' attention to me.

    The first day came.

"Come in," Mrs. Lane said. "Pull up a chair."

I did. She passed a plate of cookies to me. "You're probably hungry," she said.

I was always hungry, so I took a cookie. "Thank you," I said.

There was a plate of cookies on her desk every afternoon for the next six afternoons. They were homemade, and they were delicious. We grew closer that week.

And on that eighth afternoon, I felt a little lost as I kicked my way through fallen leaves, all the way home.

    1. (1) What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 mean?
A . The writer didn't want to shot the balls. B . The writer didn't want to stay with Mrs. Lane. C . The writer felt disappointed at missing seven shots. D . The writer thought he was laughed at by his classmates.
    2. (2) Why did Mrs. Lane ask the writer to throw ten more paper balls?
A . To get to know him better. B . To cheer the students up. C . To make him popular in class. D . To teach the class a lesson.
    3. (3) What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A . The writer was lost on his way home. B . The writer was punished by Mrs. Lane.  C . The writer missed the cookies from Mrs. Lane. D . The writer missed the time he spent with Mrs. Lane.

Why do only famous people have biographies (传记)? This is the question two young sisters, 7-year-old Aishvarya, and 11-year-old Vaishali, asked their parents. They were reading biographies in school and realized they knew more about Beyonce than about their own grandparents. So they decided to do something.

They created "Grand Stories", a workbook that helps grandchildren learn about their grandparents. Through answering guided questions and telling stories, Grand Stories help families learn more about each other.

This family had come from India to the US, and all four grandparents live far away. Through modern technology and some family visits, the girls know their grandparents—but they want more. Where did they go to school? How did they meet, get married, and raise families? What were their stories? These reflect the "Do you know" questions in the workbook to study how much people know about their family history.

The sisters asked their own grandparents to talk about their stories. The grandfather, who is a quiet person, didn't share much during the interview. But then he stayed up all night writing his biography. When the father looked through the biography, he realized there was so much he'd never known about his own father! Through these stories the father felt closer to his own family.

What the two sisters discovered is how much we depend on knowing our family stories to understand who we are in the world. These stories are important for young children growing up, as well as our becoming parents and grandparents. "Grand Stories" is a great way to start these conversations. Whether you're 7 or 70, it's never too early or too late to start sharing family stories.

    1. (1) Which of the following may appear in the workbook made by the sisters?
A . Which is the way to the book store? B . Where did they grow up? C . When will they finish the biography? D . How was the dinner last night?
    2. (2) Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
      A . B . C . D .
    3. (3) The writer wrote this passage to       .
A . tell people about the two girls' family B . introduce ways of telling family stories C . show the importance of writing biographies D . encourage people to know their family stories

A lunch break—it's an important and often necessary part of our working or school day. It's time to get something to eat and maybe chat with some friends. And now we're gradually getting used to plenty of places to buy our lunch from, all offering delicious dishes and sandwiches to eat on the go.

But buying our lunch is not just costing us money, there might be a cost in polluting our planet too. Just a sandwich, some crisps and maybe a cake and coffee can produce much waste. Cups, packing paper and plastic are all part of our disposable (一次性的)feast besides the food waste we create. Some experts say throwing away food is a big cause of environmental problems.

As for the solution to the problem, according to an environmental group called Hubbub, is to eat packed lunches. Tessa Tricks from the group thinks it's usually healthier and cheaper to make your own lunch. It means you can eat the things you really want and causes less waste.

Of course, if you haven't got time to prepare your packed lunch and you are going to buy lunch, Hubbub suggests that you should take your own container to a shop and ask them to put your food in it. The idea of using reusable coffee cups for hot drinks and refilling water bottles has already been known successful, so this could be another step in the right direction.

The problem with eating is that you might want to carry your food in something that is disposable, so it's a good idea to make sure it's something recyclable. The message seems to be that if we give our lunchtime eating habits some thought, we will all make an effort in climate(气候)change and protecting our environment. That is something for all of us to consider and take action!

    1. (1) The writer mainly tells us          in Paragraph 2.
A . the problems of wasting food B . different kinds of lunch C . the problems caused by buying lunch D . different causes of climate change
    2. (2) The underlined word "It" in Paragraph 3 refers to         .
      A . Buying take-away food B . Eating healthier food C . Cooking lunch by yourself D . Using reusable materials
    3. (3) Which of the following is the writer's opinion?
A . People like to buy lunch from shops. B . Many people are too busy to make their own food. C . Throwing away food causes problems to the environment. D . Everyone should have a good lunchtime eating habit to protect environment.
    4. (4) Which is the best title for the passage ?
A . Prepare Your Own Lunch B . Don't Use Disposable Containers C . Eat Properly to Keep Healthy D . Don't Let Our Lunch Cost the Earth

You may have heard the saying "The Yangtze River is China's mother river." The Yangtze is almost 6,400 km long. It is the world's third-longest river and covers one-fifth of China's land area. The Yangtze River Economic Zone (长江经济带) covers 11 provinces and cities, making up about 40 percent of China's total population and GDP.

On Dec. 26, 2020, Chinese government passed the Yangtze River Protection Law, which took effect on March 1, 2021. It is the first law to protect a waterway in China, CGTN noted.

The "mother river" is in great need of protection because something is wrong with it. For example, due to overfishing and water pollution, the river's Chinese Paddlefish (白鲟) has died out after keeping alive for 150 million years. There's more and more land becoming desert and land pollution near the upstream part of the river in Qinghai province, Xinhua reported.
