One day at a restaurant, a cockroach (蟑螂) suddenly flew from somewhere and landed on a lady. The lady started 1 . With a frightening voice, she began to jump, with both her 2 trying to push away the cockroach. She was so 3 that everyone in the group also got scared. The lady finally 4 to push the cockroach away, but it landed on another lady in the group.
Now, it was the 5 of a second lady in the group to act like the first lady. The waiter rushed forward to them. During their 6, the cockroach fell upon the waiter. The waiter stayed 7 and watched the behavior of the cockroach on his shirt. 8 he was confident enough, without any second, he caught it with his fingers and threw it out of the restaurant.
Drinking my coffee and watching the whole event, I 9 a few thoughts and started thinking. Was the cockroach responsible for 10 behavior? If so, then why was the waiter so calm? He dealt with it 11, without any chaos (混乱) .
Surely it was not the cockroach, but the actions and 12 of those people who saw the event that scared the ladies.
I realize that it is not the shouting of my father or my boss that 13 me, but it is that I couldn't control my feelings well. That means it's my attitude (态度) to the 14 that creates chaos in my life. In other words, maybe you can't run away from something terrible, 15 you can choose the way of treating. That's really important to you.
Hey, everyone. I'm WangXue. Our topic (话题) today is What do you think about it? If you have any opinions, welcome to share them. Thanks. |
I think it is really noisy to set off firecrackers. Some people set them off at midnight. People nearby cannot sleep well. It also creates air pollution and lots of rubbish. So I think there is no need to set them off. |
Setting off firecrackers is a tradition during Chinese festivals. People set them off to wish a happy new year. We cannot give it up. |
I like traveling. But the virus has made this more dangerous. I have to stay at home during the winter holiday. I am so boring. |
I think we can improve firecrackers. We cannot set them off freely because now they are dangerous. But if we can make them safer and better for the air, we wouldn't have to give them up. |
I think we can use something else to replace them. For example, we can use LED fireworks instead. They are safer. Even kids can play with them. |
Everyone in my class was afraid of Mrs. Lane, my maths teacher. She knew everything, especially about you. She likes tidiness. After class, one of us would walk down the rows with the wastebasket and we would put in our waste paper.
Once as a classmate collected our waste paper, Dave suddenly threw a paper ball into the basket about 4 feet away. Soon other kids followed excitedly. I also put up a beautiful shot. But the minute it left my fingers, Mrs. Lane called my name. I felt so terrible.
"Nice shot! I'd like to see more," she said. Mrs. Lane took me to the door. "Ten more shots from here. Every time you don't score a goal, you have one hour with me after school." The class cheered when I scored and groaned (叹气) when I failed. Finally, I made three shots and missed seven. It meant seven hours of one-on-one with Mrs. Lane, with one every afternoon. I simply accepted the fact that I'd never be happy again.
Finally, I understood why Mrs. Lane did this: I was new here. And I made only a few friends. Here's what happened: Whether I hit the wastebasket or not, this brought my classmates' attention to me.
The first day came.
"Come in," Mrs. Lane said. "Pull up a chair."
I did. She passed a plate of cookies to me. "You're probably hungry," she said.
I was always hungry, so I took a cookie. "Thank you," I said.
There was a plate of cookies on her desk every afternoon for the next six afternoons. They were homemade, and they were delicious. We grew closer that week.
And on that eighth afternoon, I felt a little lost as I kicked my way through fallen leaves, all the way home.
Why do only famous people have biographies (传记)? This is the question two young sisters, 7-year-old Aishvarya, and 11-year-old Vaishali, asked their parents. They were reading biographies in school and realized they knew more about Beyonce than about their own grandparents. So they decided to do something.
They created "Grand Stories", a workbook that helps grandchildren learn about their grandparents. Through answering guided questions and telling stories, Grand Stories help families learn more about each other.
This family had come from India to the US, and all four grandparents live far away. Through modern technology and some family visits, the girls know their grandparents—but they want more. Where did they go to school? How did they meet, get married, and raise families? What were their stories? These reflect the "Do you know" questions in the workbook to study how much people know about their family history.
The sisters asked their own grandparents to talk about their stories. The grandfather, who is a quiet person, didn't share much during the interview. But then he stayed up all night writing his biography. When the father looked through the biography, he realized there was so much he'd never known about his own father! Through these stories the father felt closer to his own family.
What the two sisters discovered is how much we depend on knowing our family stories to understand who we are in the world. These stories are important for young children growing up, as well as our becoming parents and grandparents. "Grand Stories" is a great way to start these conversations. Whether you're 7 or 70, it's never too early or too late to start sharing family stories.
A lunch break—it's an important and often necessary part of our working or school day. It's time to get something to eat and maybe chat with some friends. And now we're gradually getting used to plenty of places to buy our lunch from, all offering delicious dishes and sandwiches to eat on the go.
But buying our lunch is not just costing us money, there might be a cost in polluting our planet too. Just a sandwich, some crisps and maybe a cake and coffee can produce much waste. Cups, packing paper and plastic are all part of our disposable (一次性的)feast besides the food waste we create. Some experts say throwing away food is a big cause of environmental problems.
As for the solution to the problem, according to an environmental group called Hubbub, is to eat packed lunches. Tessa Tricks from the group thinks it's usually healthier and cheaper to make your own lunch. It means you can eat the things you really want and causes less waste.
Of course, if you haven't got time to prepare your packed lunch and you are going to buy lunch, Hubbub suggests that you should take your own container to a shop and ask them to put your food in it. The idea of using reusable coffee cups for hot drinks and refilling water bottles has already been known successful, so this could be another step in the right direction.
The problem with eating is that you might want to carry your food in something that is disposable, so it's a good idea to make sure it's something recyclable. The message seems to be that if we give our lunchtime eating habits some thought, we will all make an effort in climate(气候)change and protecting our environment. That is something for all of us to consider and take action!
You may have heard the saying "The Yangtze River is China's mother river." The Yangtze is almost 6,400 km long. It is the world's third-longest river and covers one-fifth of China's land area. The Yangtze River Economic Zone (长江经济带) covers 11 provinces and cities, making up about 40 percent of China's total population and GDP.
On Dec. 26, 2020, Chinese government passed the Yangtze River Protection Law, which took effect on March 1, 2021. It is the first law to protect a waterway in China, CGTN noted.
The "mother river" is in great need of protection because something is wrong with it. For example, due to overfishing and water pollution, the river's Chinese Paddlefish (白鲟) has died out after keeping alive for 150 million years. There's more and more land becoming desert and land pollution near the upstream part of the river in Qinghai province, Xinhua reported.

International students at Beijing International Studies University celebrated Little New Year-usually a week before Spring Festival-at one of (他们的) teachers' home in Beijing on Thursday.
For Marcela Vazaves, celebrating the Spring Festival is to (花) it with loved ones, whether it is with friends and teachers around her or with parents and (亲戚) in Mexico online. However, this year, she and two of her classmates were invited to a teacher's home, making dumplings and learning about the (文化) behind Spring Festival. The 25-year-old said (虽然) she felt sorry for not being able to travel home because of the COVID-19 epidemic (流行病) , she is (感谢) that she is safe and well in China. "The university has taken (真正地) good care of us international students since the epidemic broke out more than a year ago," she said .
"The university has paired all international students with people in Beijing and prepared (礼物) for them, so they can celebrate the festival with (当地的) people and enjoy a real festival environment." said the teacher. "Inviting students to my home is a good way to make friends with them. I teach international students Chinese language, I also want to build true (友谊) between us," he said.
At school, fights sometimes happen. But how to keep away from (they)? Here's something you can do.
Be calm. Sometimes, you feel angry that you really want to teach somebody a lesson. But being angry can't solve problems. Neither can a fight. In fact, everyone in a fight should (punish), no matter who started it. There is no (win) in a fight.
Shout loudly. Turn towards the person is coming up behind to attack (攻击) you, put both your (hand) up in front of your body and loudly say "stop". If the person doesn't stop, ask help by calling out the name of a teacher whose office is nearby.
Learn to refuse. Your friend may ask you (join) in a fight. Learn to say no. Helping him fight is not (help) at all. If you really want to give him a hand, tell him to give it up. Tell him if he gets into a fight, he may get hurt (easy). Then, try to learn why he wants a fight and help him find a right way to deal with the problem.
