At the age of 16, Einstein always played with a group of naughty kids.1he was so busy playing, he didn't study enough and failed his final exam.
One morning, when Einstein was2a fishing rod and was about to go fishing with his friends, his father stopped him and said3, "Einstein, you're so fond of4all day that you failed your exam. I'm worried about your future."
"What are you worrying about? Jack and Robert also failed, but they could5go fishing." "My boy, you can't think6that." his father said, "There is a story that people tell in our hometown. Listen to it now."
"There were7cats playing on a roof. But unluckily, one cat was careless and8the chimney (烟囱) while holding the other cat. When the two cats tried their best to climb out of the9, one cat had soot(烟灰) on the face, while the other cat's face was clean. Seeing the soot-faced cat, the clean cat thought its face10be dirty, so it ran to the riverside and washed its face. The soot-faced cat saw the clean-faced cat and thought its face was also11, so it just walked down the street as usual. People all laughed at this cat."
"Einstein, no one can be your 'mirror'. Don't blindly12others. You have to think for yourself. If you take your cues from others, you will never learn."
Hearing this, Einstein thought for a while and then13down his fishing rod and returned to his room. He decided to pay more attention to his14and less attention to what his friends were doing. This allowed 15 to be successful.

Our house was across the street from a big hospital, so we rented (出租) our empty rooms to outpatients. One evening, there was a knock at the door. I opened it to see a sick-looking man.
His face looked terrible - it was swollen(肿胀的) and red. Yet his voice was pleasant. He told me that he came for treatment and that he'd been finding a spare room since noon, but no one would give him one because of his face.
For a moment I didn't know if I should let him in, but he said he would be happy to just sleep on our passage. I agreed.
The old man had a huge heart inside his small body. He told me that he fished for a living to support his daughter, who has five children and a disabled husband.
He didn't complain while telling me his story. He was thankful that he did not feel any pain from his disease, which was seemingly a form of skin cancer(皮肤癌).
The next morning, he said, "Can I come back and stay the next time I need treatment?" I told him he was welcome to come again.
On his next trip, he brought a big fish and some other seafood. In the years that he stayed with us, there was never a time that he did not bring us gifts like these.
My neighbor warned me that I could lose possible renters by putting up the old man after he left the first morning.
Maybe we did lose renters once or twice. But if only they could have known him, perhaps their illnesses would have been easier to stand. I know our family will be thankful to have known him; from him we learned what it was to accept the bad without complaint and the good with thanks.
Look around and you'll see people busy on their smart phones. Smart phones do make our lives easier. But have you ever thought about what they mean to your eyes?
According to a study, half of British people own smart phones and they spend an average of two hours a day using them. There has been a 35% increase in the number of people in the UK who suffer from short-sightedness(近视) since smart phones were introduced there in 1997.
_______________. When looking at something in the distance, your eyes automatically blink (自动眨眼) a certain number of times. However, when you look at things closer to your face, the blinking slows down. This reduces the amount of tears and causes discomfort in your eyes. Another bad habit is using smart phones in dark rooms before going to sleep. If you look at a bright screen while your pupils become larger, too much light enters your eyes. This can do harm to the eyes and cause a disease called glaucoma(青光眼).
While you're probably not going to stop using your smart phone, there are a few things you can do to protect your eyes. Hold your phone at least 30 centimeters away from your eyes when using it. Take a break every hour and try the following: look at something at least five meters from you and then focus on the tip of your nose. Repeat this several times. It should reduce the discomfort in your eyes.
Humans are the smartest animals on Earth. We have lots of abilities that other animals don't have. But sometimes, our way of thinking can become a problem.
Julia Watzek, a graduate student in psychology_(心理学) at Georgia State University, US, recently did research on the problem-solving abilities of both monkeys and humans. She and her team tested their ability to change their strategies(策略) by having them play a simple game.
In this game, each player was shown four squares on a computer screen: one striped square, one spotted square and two blank squares. While being trained to play the game, they learned that clicking the striped square and then the spotted square would cause a blue triangle to appear suddenly in one of the blank squares. Clicking on the blue triangle would give them a reward - human players would hear a "woop!" sound and monkey players would receive a snack.
But halfway through the game, the researchers introduced a shortcut. Suddenly, the blue triangle started appearing at the start of gameplay, beside the striped and spotted squares. If a player clicked on the blue triangle, they'd receive their reward right away.
To their surprise, about 70 percent of the monkeys found out this way immediately. Humans, however, were much slower. Only I out of 56 human players found out the shortcut right away.
Watzek's conclusion was that humans tend to get "stuck in their ways" when it comes to strategic thinking. Things such as standardized testing and formal schooling might cause humans to use the same strategy over and over, even when it doesn't work very well.
a. Click the striped square. b. Click the spotted square.
c. Click the blank square. d. Click the blue triangle.

A Fantastic Hobby
A British boy has become one of the youngest people to sail alone across the Atlantic Ocean. SebClover has a fantastic and exciting hobby-sailing. He sailed his 9.8-metre-long boat 5,000 km from Tenerife to Antigua.
Fifteen-year-old Seb said, "Sometimes I was afraid. But I still enjoyed every moment. The best thing was seeing fish and other sea animals swimming close to the boat." He was also very happy to arrive in Antigua.
"You are busy all the time on a boat alone. It's difficult to cook something to eat on this kind of journey because you have to watch the sea all the time. Usually, you eat something small and often. That way, you don't have to stop working. "The worst part of the journey?" That's easy to answer, "said Seb, "I ran out of chocolate!"
Seb has sailed boats since he was very young and started to get ready for this journey when he was only twelve. Seb said, "l enjoyed sailing alone, but I'm looking forward to going back to school now. Next time, I'd like to go sailing with my friends."
