    Every year, a lot of children in the USA go to summer camps. Some go to play outdoors in the woods, in the mountains or on lakes. But families now have many choices of special camps. These can be in the middle of nature or a big city. Special camps offer young people the chance to learn about different subjects.

    In technology camps, one subject that children can learn about is video game design. They learn how to use computer programs to create games of their own. One program that teaches video game design is called Cyber camp. Children can learn how to design their own virtual* worlds to set their video games in. Then, they program their own rules and objects into the games.

    Cyber camp also offers courses in robot building and Web design. A recent story in the Washington Post described how one child made a robot that could sing a song. Another made a robot that could follow a black line drawn on a piece of cardboard. Also, children can learn how to make websites. One child made a site for Pokemon, one of his favorite cartoon shows.

    For thousands of years, humans(人) have explored (探索) the Earth. Nowadays, we are exploring space. Astronomers (天文学家) are the modern-day explorers. Now, many astronomers are looking for new planets and new places for humans to live in the future. But where do astronomers start exploring?

    First of all, astronomers look for a star. That's because our own Earth moves around a star— the Sun. More importantly, it is neither too far from nor too near to the Sun for heat and light. So when astronomers have found the star, they look at the planets around it. In recent years, astronomers have found nearly 400 new planets with stars. However, many of these planets are either too near to the star or too far away.

    However, if the planet is in a good place, astronomers look for three key things: water, air and rock (岩石). Water is important because all life needs water. Humans can drink it and they can also grow plants with water. And plants produce air for humans to breathe and food to eat. Rock on a planet is also important. That's because there is often water under the rock.

After many years of exploring, astronomers have found a planet like the Earth. It's Gliese 581g and it's near a star. The astronomers think it has water and rock and the temperature is between -31℃ and -12℃. That's cold, but not colder than Antarctica or the Arctic Circle, for example, Gliese 581g is bigger than the Earth. A year on Gliese 581g is only 37 Earth days, not 365 Earth days. But astronomers do not think these are big differences and some of them think Gliese 581g will be a new Earth. However, Gliese 581g is twenty light years from the Earth.

    How could we tell time if there were no watches or clocks anywhere in the world?

    The sun was probably the world's first "clock", except in the far north, where the Eskimos live. There, it's dark most of the winter, and light most of the summer. But in most of the world, people have used clock. Even today, if you don't have a clock, you still know that when the sun shines, it's day, and when it's dark, it's night. The sun can also tell you if it's morning, noon, or afternoon.

    People who live near the sea can tell time from the tides. In the day time, for about six hours, the water rises higher and higher on the beach. And then it goes down and down for about six hours. The same thing happens again at night. There are two high tides and two low tides every 24 hours.

    Seaman on a ship learn how to tell time by looking at the moon and the stars. The whole sky is their clock.

    In some places in the world the wind comes up at about the same time every day or changes direction or stops blowing. In these places the wind can be the clock.

    A sand clock is an even better clock. If you had fine dry sand in a glass shaped like the one in the picture, you would have what is called an hour glass. The sand in the hourglass goes from the top part to the bottom part in exactly an hour. When the hourglass is turned over, the sand will take another hour to go back again.

    As the saying goes, "A hero is known in the time of misfortune". Zhong Nanshan is a hero like this. He is a doctor in Guangdong and he (挽救) many people's lives in 2003.

    In 2003, SARS broke out in Guangdong. Later, it spread across China and other parts of the world. Patients (咳嗽) a lot and got fevers. Hundreds of patients even died from the disease. Even many doctors and nurses got SARS when they treated patients. So (每人) was afraid of it. But Zhong was brave enough to ( 与....战斗) against the disease. Zhong spent days and nights to find the cause of the disease. And with his way of treating, many patients began to get better. Zhong finally won people's trust and (使……满意) people so much.

    In early 2020, a disease called COVID-19 hit Wuhan. It went quickly and around tens of thousands of Chinese people got the (疾病). Zhong Nanshan is 84 years old, but he quickly (率 领) his team to Wuhan to meet it. Zhong's team took many measures to cure the patients with COVID-19. He advised people to wear masks, wash hands often, stay at home and not to go to crowed places. Zhong wins the (心) of people again.

    Zhong always (锻炼) in his life. When he was 67, he could still play basketball. Now at the age of 84, Zhong is in excellent  (身体状况) and he still treats patients in the hospital and teaches young doctors. "I am just a doctor." Zhong says. But we think he is a real fighter.

    What would you do if you felt anxious (焦虑的)? Would you feel better if someone else could share his or her experiences with you? In the United States, two teenage girls set up a mental health camp called "Healing (治愈) Hearts" to help people deal with anxiety.

    The idea of creating the camp came from Dinah Martinez, 17, and her schoolmate Janet Martinez, 18. Both girls suffered from anxiety.

    Dinah Martinez always did well in school. "But then I just started to collapse (崩溃)" Dinah Martinez said. She stopped talking to her friends, stopped going to school for three weeks and stayed at home.

    Janet Martinez was anxious in elementary school. Things got even worse in junior high. "It was a lot of pressure (压力) I put on myself. I would wake up in the morning and it was like my heart was racing," she said.

    The girls' camp idea got support from Girls Leading Our World (GLOW) in the US. The organization awarded them $5,000 to put on the camp for other teenage girls.

    The "Healing Hearts" camp was created to "help deal with anxiety, especially with girls in high school because that's when they are the most vulnerable (脆弱的) ,"Janet Martinez said.

    On the first day of the camp, 10 girls were there. Experts at the camp talked about anxiety. They helped girls who were experiencing anxiety. The girls learned how to calm themselves when they are anxious. They learned about calming methods like deep breathing and guided mediation (调节).

"It's good to know that someone else is going through the same thing as me and we can both help each other out," Dinah Martinez said.
