Once, two hungry mice came into a dairy (乳品店). As they were looking for something to eat, they fill into a large jar(坛子) full of milk. They did not know how to swim. Soon they started
drowning (淹没).
Both of them tried their best to stay above the milk. One of the mice said, "Friend, I think we are going to die(死). No one can help us now. I wish God(上帝) would send someone to help us!""
The other mouse said, "Do not be afraid, my friend. We must not lose heart. We must keep trying."
But a few minutes later, the first mouse gave up (放弃) hope. He did not try so he drowned. The other mouse saw his friend drowning in the milk and felt very sorry.
He kept moving his legs to try to keep afloat(漂浮). With great effort, the mouse climbed out In the end, he came to know that God helps those who help themselves(他们自己).
My daughter Maria is a girl of nine years old. She is in Grade Four.
Every evening we get into homework battles. Three afternoons a week, she has activities (net-ball, singing) after school and by the time we get home, homework is the last thing she feels like doing. The other two days, she gets home early and we argue (争论) about whether she should do her homework right away after school, or if she should have some time to rest and play first.
When Maria at last sits down to do her homework, she seems to want me there to help all the time. I do want to help her, but I'm sure that she is going to need to be able to do it by herself. And in fact, most of the time, I have to do other things.
It seems that children these days have much more homework than we did, and some of it is really beyond (超越) their abilities (能力). As you can see, I'm really worried about homework and I really don't know what I should do. Any ideas?
Dear Helen,
How's everything? I'm glad to get your letter. You asked me what I did last weekend. Now let me tell you. Last weekend I went to a forest with my parents. We left for the forest by car early in the morning on Saturday. When we got there, it was about 11:30 a. m. We had some rice and vegetables for lunch. After lunch, we had a short rest. In the afternoon, we went fishing by the lake. We caught some small fish. At night, we put up our tents and camped in the forest. It was exciting to sleep in a tent! On Sunday morning, we rode horses, flew kites and fed sheep. After lunch, we drove back home. We were tired but happy.
How about your weekend? Please write and tell me.
Yours,
Jessica
