I was walking into my first school in America with fear. I had travelled a long distance from India in order to 1 my parents who had been here for three years, hoping America would help my future.
I was afraid 2 I would do everything alone. I didn't know3here! On the first day, I went to my4 period class after I had missed my first. With fear, I 5 the door knob (把手), opening it slowly. Everyone's 6 were on me as I entered the room. 7 paying attention to them, I went to the teacher and asked if this was the right class. His soft "yes" made me a little8. He gave me a piece of paper called Course Requirements. To my 9, he then asked me to choose the seat by myself. You know, in India we needn't do that. Since it was my first day, it was 10 for me to find the right directions, but I managed to get to my classes on my own. At the end of the day, I was 11 the way to the school bus which we didn't have in India either. I found my bus and sat down 12 thinking today wasn't so bad.
As time passed, I13some friendships and started to love my school. The teachers had a fun way of making hard things easy, 14 the teachers in my home country had a more strict way. We also had much 15 school days in India 7:00 am to 5:30 pm, while in America school was 7:30 to 2:30. The main difference I found in America is the amount I learned each day. Because of the great education here, I feel I am the luckiest person in the whole world.

It should be easy for you to recognize faces of your family and friends. But can you remember faces that you've only seen once? You might think it is very difficult.
However, studies have found a small number of people have amazing face recognisation skills. They are the so-called "super recognisers (识别器)", who can remember at least 80 percent of faces they've seen. It is unknown how many people truly have these skills.
But studies show that at least one in 50 people are super recognisers, reported the Daily Mail. Bournemouth University of UK recently carried out a study, trying to find whether super recognisers have a different way to deal with faces. They found that when these people look at faces, they spend more time looking at the person's nose. Researchers also found that these people are not particularly smarter than others. Their super ability is limited only to face recognisation. Another important finding is that there are subtypes (子类型) of super recognisation. Some super recognisers never forget faces. But for some, if you present pairs of faces to them at the same time, they can quickly decide whether the faces are of the same person or two different people.
In fact, many super recognisers say they are good at "spotting" faces in a crowd. These subtypes of super recognisation could be applied to many areas of life. For example, the skills could be very useful at a passport control checkpoint. Super recognisers could help match faces in CCTV footage. They could also help police spot known troublemakers, bad people or even missing people in crowds.
①When it comes to Chinese students considering studying in foreign countries, many of them usually believe that life will be easy and enjoyable. Unfortunately, it's likely that students with those thought will be disappointed very soon after landing at the airport.
②So, what are the problems you may have and how can you deal with them?
③Teaching and learning styles in America are very different from those in China, requiring more critical thinking (批判性思维) and teamwork. In a normal American classroom, one project might be done by a study group in which every person has their own responsibility.
④So don't worry about your language or any grammar mistakes. Just watch what other students do, and don't be afraid of asking any question. The discussions, sometimes even arguments, that your group members and you hold are likely to be the beginning of a friendship.
⑤Besides schoolwork, another important thing faced by overseas students is homesickness or loneliness. You may miss your parents' cooking, your pets, or even your old bed. Being away from home can create bitter feelings, especially when faced with the challenges of getting used to a new environment.
⑥What I strongly suggest is to try hard to deal with these feelings. Be open to new friendships. Sign up for school activities, and give yourself permission to enjoy life at school, even if you miss home a lot. Be organized and keep a diary to check your progress. Write down three new things that you're grateful for every evening, as well as three things you're looking forward to every morning.
⑦Studying abroad is never simple. In fact, there will be many difficulties every day. But I'm sure you will overcome your difficulties and make your time overseas a success.
Delia was a young pianist. Her husband, Joe, was a young artist.
Each of them was taking lessons: Joe with a famous art teacher, and Delia with a great pianist from Germany. Their teachers were the very best, so lessons were expensive, more than they could really afford, but … when you love your art, nothing is too much.
But soon the money began to run out, and they couldn't afford the lessons any more.
Then one day Delia came back home and told Joe that she had met a man whose daughter, Sally, wanted to learn the piano, and he was going to pay her $50 an hour.
"Delia," Joe said, "I'll be much happier if you keep up your lessons." Delia said it didn't matter. "When I've had some money, I'll continue." But Joe also decided to stop his lessons, to draw pictures and sell them.
A few days later, Joe came home and proudly took $200 from his pocket. "I met a man from Vermont," he said, "who bought one of my pictures. And he wants to buy more!"
▲ . They didn't have to worry any more about money.
Then, one day, Joe came home and saw that Delia's hand was wrapped in a bandage (绷带). He asked her what had happened. "Oh," said Delia. "My student, Sally, asked me to make some coffee for her. I dropped the coffee and burned my hand. Sally went straight to the drugstore and got this bandage for me. "
"Delia, what have you been doing the last two weeks?" Joe asked. She tried not to tell him, but the tears came. "Oh Joe, I couldn't get any students, so I worked as a waitress in a restaurant. Today, I burned my hand with hot water. So I can't work any more. But we'll still have money from the man in Vermont, won't we?"
Joe looked at her. "There's no man in Vermont," he said. "I've been working in a drugstore, and today someone came in to buy bandages for a woman who'd burned her hand. So when I saw you, well, I guessed."
They both laughed.

Stonehenge, a rock circle, is not only one of Britain's most famous historical places but also one of its greatest mysteries Every year it (接待) more than 75,00 visitors. People like to go to this place(尤其) in June as they want to see the sun rising on the longest day of the year. For many years, historians believed Stonehenge was a temple where ancient leaders tried to (沟通,交流) with the gods. However, historian Paul Stoker thinks this can't be (真的) because Stonehenge was (建造) so many centuries ago." The leaders arrived in England much later," he points out.
Another (受欢迎的) idea is that Stonehenge might be a kind of calendar. The large stones were put together in a certain way. On midsummer's morning, the sun shines (直接地) into the center of the stones. Other people believe the stones have a(医疗的) purpose. They think the stones can prevent illness and keep people healthy. "As you walk there, you can feel the energy from your (脚) move up your body," said one visitor. No one is sure what Stonehenge was used for, but most agree that the position of the stones must be for a special purpose. Some think it (可能) be a burial place or a place to honor ancestors. Others think it was built to celebrate a victory over an enemy.
How to Understand Dogs?
Humans are good at understanding others' feelings from the sounds they make. A baby's laugh tells us he or she is happy. Similarly, we have no trouble (know) that a dog's energetic bark is a sound of joy.
In fact, the earlier studies have shown we're good at telling the(different) of the dog's barks. Are there similar features that we hear of a baby's laugh, a dog's happy bark or a man's angry cough? A team of researchers designed survey to know about how humans realized the feelings of dogs from their sounds. Thirty-nine people (invite) to take the survey. They listened to sounds any expressions. The volunteers judged each sound through (it) emotional class.
The(researcher) results showed a special relationship between how the listeners learned the feeling of each sound and its sound science. This way, (short) calls were regarded as more positive ones than longer calls. By these same simple rules, they came to a conclusion: It may be possible to (easy) recognize man-made feelings in social robots.
How can you show your personality without saying a word? Clothes and shoes may help you a lot. You can let your fashion do the talking, while your sneakers(球鞋) do the walking.
The sneaker culture we live in today first started in the 1980s. At that time, basketball became more popular in the US and abroad. Many clothing brands began to tie their sneakers to basketball stars. Even today, we see lots of sports stars wearing the latest shoes in TV ads.
However, basketball sneakers are not only for athletes. They're also popular with young people. Sneakers are not only comfortable to wear, but also encourage kids to create. Students can take part in design-your-own-sneaker competitions. They are given blank, white shoes like an artist's canvas(画布). Then it is up to them to create their own sneaker artwork using pens and paint.
In Britain, students can also design their own sports shoes online before buying them, including colors and patterns. Sneakers in the US are more than simply shoes to wear them for school or sports. Many Americans collect them, too. People who collect sneakers even have a club for themselves. They're called "sneaker heads".
