Water Splashing Festival (泼水节)
In Yunnan, China, there is a special festival called Water Splashing Festival. It is one of the most important festivals for Dai people in Yunnan Province in the southwest of China. It is the Dai's New Year on 13th to 16th in April of Chinese lunar calendar(农历) with a 3-day celebration. The first day is called" Mairi" in the Dai's language. It's like Chinese New Year's Eve. The second day is called "Naori" or" Kongri". And the third day is called "Bimai". It means the New Year of Dai people. The third day is the happiest day through the whole year.
Dai people think water is lucky. It means best wishes for the New Year. At the Water Splashing Festival, people splash water on every person with all kinds of buckets (桶). Tourists are welcome to take part in the festival and some tourists will be surprisingly splashed. So do not bring phones and cameras on the streets during the festival. Enjoy the water and have fun with the friendly Dai people!
