Stuart Bee prayed that rescue would come before his ship slipped completely under water. The 62-year-old sailor had been washed out of his boat by a wave while he was sleeping at about midnight on Saturday, leaving him fighting for survival in the Atlantic, 86 miles off Florida.
Mr. Bee set out at 4 pm on Friday and was reported missing on Saturday by friends. On Sunday morning, 11 hours later, he was found by a container ship. "What day is it?" he asked Lacruiser Relativo, the container ship's second officer who threw him a lifebuoy and helped him aboard.
"My ship suffered engine failure. There were long and sharp noises and I was asleep when the water gushed in the back and forced me up the front," Mr. Bee told the US coast guard after his rescue. He said he swam in jeans and heavy work boots through the boat's forward hatch (船口) and surfaced, with no life jacket or any flotation. Mr. Relativo said later, "He stuck to the only part of his boat that was not sunk. He told me that he thought maybe that it was to be his last night and that if it was, had he lived his life well enough? He said he realized he had a beautiful life, out there watching the moon on the open water. It was dark but he found an inner peace as he looked at the sky."
Leisa Bee, his niece, said, "Another half hour and his boat would have completely sunk and no one would have found it or him. I keep looking at the pictures of his rescue and I can't stop crying. My uncle lived on that boat, so his home is gone now and all his possessions, though he did manage to keep his wallet. When he called my family, he said, 'Hey, you'll never guess what happened to me!' I had no clue of the thousands of people who'd been praying for me."
NASA has a new job listing, and it's no joke. The US space agency is looking for a "joker" to join their journey to Mars.
A journey to Mars is no laughing matter. On average, the red planet is 140 million miles away. A trip there would take around eight months in a small spaceship. As it is difficult to communicate, astronauts will have to wait 20 minutes for a reply when an emergency happens.
"When you're living with others in a confined space for a long time, such as on a mission to Mars, problems will happen," said Jeffrey Johnson, a scientist at the University of Florida. This is probably why NASA wants an astronaut with a sense of humor. These people have the ability to pull everyone together.
In stressful situations, perhaps humor is a way to know we aren't alone. By laughing together, we share stress, Then we can focus on our jobs instead of just worrying.
There are other examples of team "jokers". One example is the journey to the South Pole led by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, Adolf, a cook at Amundsen's team, was "joker". He made people laugh through the whole difficult and dangerous journey, Amundsen later wrote that Adolf was the most valuable member of the team.
But if you're hoping that your favorite TV comedian will fly to Mars, that probably won't happen. "Being funny won't be enough to land somebody the job," Johnson said. "They also need to be an excellent scientist and engineer." Besides, they must be in top physical condition.
Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I'm not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don't come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that's just the reality of how life is.
However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And, in addition to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. To become great at certain things, it'll require even more time, time that most people won't put in.
This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don't enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it.
When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It's sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there's a huge chance that you're wrong anyway.
Whatever you do, if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. If you're not willing to put in the time and work, don't expect to receive any rewards. Consistent hard work won't ensure you the level of success you may want, but it will ensure that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.
Basketball is a team sport played in a court with two netted rings attached to 10-foot poles on either end of the court. Variations (变种) on the basic game include beach basketball, wheelchair basketball and banks hot basketball. Here's how to play the basic game.
Two players from the opposing teams try to take possession of the ball. The team that catches the ball first plays offense, and the opposing team plays defense. Players of the same team pass the ball back and forth as the opposition attempts to take possession of it. Team players are assigned different positions.
The ball must be continually dribbled (运球) as players try to move it toward the extreme ends of the court where the netted rings wait. . You have to dribble or shoot the ball. Each player must throw the ball within a maximum of 35 seconds. The players cannot kick the ball.
Making illegal body contact is a foul (犯规). If a team commits consecutive (连贯的) fouls, their opponents are awarded a free throw.
The team that scores the most points in the stipulated time is the winner. If the teams are tied at the end of regulation, the game goes into overtime. Overtime periods are played until one team has more points than the other at the end of an overtime period.
A. The referee throws up the ball to start the game.
B. Don't walk with the ball, which is called traveling.
C. You can learn to dribble, pass, shoot and defend at a high level.
D. Start your journey by playing against the best players in your age group.
E. They are point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward and center.

Years ago, if a teenager had some problems in her life, she might go home and write in her diary. Now, a teenager with 1 problems might go onto the Internet and write about his problems in a blog. In many ways a diary and a blog are very 2. So, what makes blogging different from writing in 3 diary?
The biggest difference is that blogging is much more 4 than a diary. Usually, a teenager treats his diary like a book full of 5 that he does not want to 6. It's interesting that someone who writes in a blog 7 a diary will probably write nearly the same information.
I have a little sister, and sometimes I go online to read her 8. She writes about things like waking up early for swimming practice and not studying enough for her chemistry test. 9 I was her age, I wrote about the same things, but 10 in my diary. Then, after I had finished writing, I would hide my diary in a secret place because I was 11 that my sister might read it!
The biggest 12 with blogging is that anyone can read what you write. If I was angry with a friend during high school and wrote something 13 about her in my diary, she would never know! 14, if my sister ever wrote something bad about a friend, that friend 15 read her blog and get a “cry”. There are also 16 to blogging, of course. If I felt sad one day and wrote in my diary, “Nobody cares about me,” 17 would know about it. However, if my sister wrote the same sentence in her blog, her best friends would 18 respond and tell her how much they 19 her. Blogs help people 20 in touch with their friends and know what the people around them are doing.
