I can well remember that you1China for the first time when you were nine. Ever since you returned, you have been interested in Chinese culture and have put a lot of2into learning Chinese. When you first started to learn Chinese, I3it was nothing but a passing fad (一时的狂热) . However, you didn't4halfway, but kept on learning and did a good job in the HSK (汉语水平考试) . Now you finally got what you had5for a long time. You got the chance to6life in China for one year. You should have it, my son, for chances only come to those who are7.
When you study there, you will have to face8in everyday life that you have never experienced before, but after a year abroad, you will return with a new9at life—and at yourself.
Your mum and I are both10you. Keep it up, my son!
Love,
Dad
People often ask me for suggestions about how to learn English. As for it, everyone is different. I'll share some of my experience. I once took a school year English course in Wuhan University, but I mostly learned English on my own.
One thing I can tell you is that once you've started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. If you see something when you're riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about "How would I say them in English?" At first, it might be with simple words or phrases, but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. Now I'm in America, and for most of the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It's amazing how much this helps.
For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I didn't want to make mistakes. Finally I got it over. And while traveling in America, I'd try to hang out with friends who couldn't speak Chinese, so that I'd have no choice but to speak English. And I also decided that if I said something stupid and other people laughed at me, then so be it. After that, my English started improving much more quickly.
Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you're writing, and give you some suggestions for improvement.
Two years ago, my family moved to a new city and I had to study in a new school. As I had few friends there, I felt lonely. Then I met Tony. The first time I saw him, he was standing in the center of a group of students, telling jokes. The children around laughed from time to time. Tony knew about my problem. He asked me to play basketball with his friends and helped me with my studies. We soon became good friends.
About a year ago, however, Tony's father was killed in an accident. As a result, his family had to move to a small house. Tony changed into a different person. He became silent and he even lost his interest in studies. Several times, I invited him to go out and play basketball with me, but he refused. I wanted to help him, but didn't know what to do.
Then something strange happened in my class. Two classmates lost the money in their schoolbags.
Last Friday, just before the P. E. lesson, I went back to the classroom to get my running shoes I would use. The door was half open. I went in. To my astonishment, I saw Tony was searching one of my classmates' schoolbags. I was shocked…
I think that a great friend is a great artist who can change my feeling about life greatly. When I talk about the person who influenced me most, I must think of my best friend quickly.
When I was in my university, one of my classmates sat beside me. His name is Wang Tao. He is an unforgettable friend in my life. He is good at studying and handsome. Everyone knows that he is a genius of my university.
He is kind-hearted and is always ready to help others. But he doesn't like others to praise him, because he thinks what he did is common. There is an old saying: A friend in need is a friend indeed. Wang Tao sets a good example in many parts in my life.
I remembered that my Mathematics was mediocre at that time, but he was excellent in solving Mathematics questions. He often received high scores. Of course, I wished I could reach his level. Though we talked all day long, he was patient and polite to answer my Mathematics questions. Slowly, I made great progress in Mathematics. I passed the examination finally. Then we became friends naturally. And now, I still remember his strong will to study.
We know that we live in a society, so we all need a lot of friends. There are two kinds of friends, good and bad. Bad friends may make us fail in life, while good ones make our life successful. To me, Wang Tao is a very good friend. I learnt so much from him, and I became better and better.
We separated three months ago. Now I miss him very much, and I hope that our friendship will continue to be just strong after we graduate.
Stories and Art of Chinese Fans
You may think you cannot live through summer without air conditioners. But in ancient China, hand fans were almost the only ones to help people keep cool.
Chinese people started to use hand fans over 2,000 years ago. The fans came in different shapes, such as round and square. They were also made from all kinds of materials, Palm leaf fans were cheap and easy to make. Feather fans(羽毛扇)showed the owners high status. Sandalwood(檀香)fans could send out a sweet smell.
Later, hand fans became far more than just something that could cool you down. They developed into art works, in which tuanshan (round fans)and zheshan (folded fans)were the most common.
In the shape of a full moon, tuanshan was usually made of silk. They had beautiful birds and flowers on them. Women, especially those in the imperial palace(皇宫), liked to use them. Meanwhile, men, especially the literati(文人), used zheshan. The literati liked them because they were usually made of paper and they could paint and write poems on them. It was a way for them to show off their ability in literature, painting and handwriting. Almost anything can be painted on zheshan.
Today. Chinese people still use these fans, but not many people write or paint on them any more. Next time when you are waving a fan, you may think of the stories behind it.

Lisa has always been fat. She wanted to lose weight, not only because she wanted to look more beautiful and healthier, also because it would make life easier.

She was also unhappy about the way people treated her sometimes. She couldn't enjoy having dinner with her friends she was afraid of getting fatter.
But now things are quite different, Last month, her classmates were (prepare) for the School Art Week. They invited Lisa (play) the lead role of the Proud Queen(皇后) that was tall and fat. Lisa agreed and practiced a lot.
Soon after the play, Lisa became a star. She did a good job that everyone remembered the Proud Queen. She even won the School Best Actress Award her wonderful performance.
Now Lisa doesn't worry about being fat any . She believes in the English saying "Every dog has its day".

food Some popular Chinese food in America can't be saw in China at all. |
