Mandy: Is it ever OK to lie to a child? My 8-year-old son likes playing soccer, but he's not very good at it. Yesterday he played badly on the school team. When he finished the game he asked me, "Am I a bad player?" I said, "Of course not! You've played well!" Did I do the right thing?

Emma: Yes, you did the right thing. White lies are a necessary part of life. Sometimes you have to tell lies that hurt nobody. You just wanted to make him feel good.

Bobo @ Emma: I don't think there is ever a good reason to lie to our children. Children learn honesty from the examples they see. As the first teachers, we parents should always be honest in order to teach our children to be honest, too. If you keep hiding truth(真相) from them and they find the fact in the future, they will not believe you anymore. I believe honesty is the first step to a good parent-child relationship.

Ruby: You lied to make your son feel better, but you missed a good chance to teach him how to face difficulties in our life. People should work hard for what they want. Maybe next time you can say, "Sorry, dear, I'm afraid not. But we can practice more, because great soccer players practice a lot." 'The truth will make him stronger.

Alex @ Ruby: Agree. Parents should be honest to their children. Yet, sometimes we don't need to be so direct. Or we can let our kid talk about his feeling first. If I were you @ Mandy, I would ask my son "What do you think?" first. Then he will tell you his thoughts. In that way, everything you say is true, and you can also avoid hurting him.

I think that a great friend is a great artist who can change my feeling about life greatly. When I talk about the person who influenced me most, I must think of my best friend quickly.

When I was in my university, one of my classmates sat beside me. His name is Wang Tao. He is an unforgettable friend in my life. He is good at studying and handsome. Everyone knows that he is a genius of my university.

He is kind-hearted and is always ready to help others. But he doesn't like others to praise him, because he thinks what he did is common. There is an old saying: A friend in need is a friend indeed. Wang Tao sets a good example in many parts in my life.

I remembered that my Mathematics was mediocre at that time, but he was excellent in solving Mathematics questions. He often received high scores. Of course, I wished I could reach his level. Though we talked all day long, he was patient and polite to answer my Mathematics questions. Slowly, I made great progress in Mathematics. I passed the examination finally. Then we became friends naturally. And now, I still remember his strong will to study.

We know that we live in a society, so we all need a lot of friends. There are two kinds of friends, good and bad. Bad friends may make us fail in life, while good ones make our life successful. To me, Wang Tao is a very good friend. I learnt so much from him, and I became better and better.

    Dear Joe,

I wrote you the letter to tell you about what the world used to be like when I was young. Life used to be very different then. We didn't have cell phones when we wanted to talk to our friends. We didn't have e mails either, so we had to write letters.

When we traveled from town to town, we used to walk or ride horses or take a cart(马车). Later we had buses and very few people had cars. Air travel was a luxury and we used to dream of riding on an airplane but now everyone does. It's so common.

Food is another big difference. There weren't any supermarkets so we used to grow our own food. We would exchange some with people from other towns to buy the things we didn't have. We didn't have a refrigerator(冰箱)so we kept things cool in a special room downstairs.

But the biggest difference is electricity. We didn't have any in our town! At night, we used to light candles when we wanted light and we burned coal(煤)or wood to keep warm. We didn't have television. In summer, we used to go swimming in the river.

Life used to be very different, but we were happy.

    Love,

    Grandpa

When we think summer, most of us think of fun in the outdoors. So it seems easy to lose weight over the summer. In fact, though, it's quite possible for us to put on weight. The good news is that we can avoid these problems if we know these ways.

Here are some ways to keep summer weight away.

When we don't have a plan, it's easy to spend summer moving from bed to the computer. So it is necessary to make a work or study plan, like learning a new skill or working at a job.

Because we don't have to go to school, it's easy to sleep late, watch too much TV and eat more snakes as usual. So it's necessary to make sure your summer days follow a schedule—getting up at the same time each day and eating meals as usual times.

Whenever you're free, find something special to do, like making a dinner for your family.

But remember: limit your screen time, no more than two hours a day.

If it's too hot outside or you don't like going to a gym, you can do you exercise indoors. If you love being outdoors, try swimming, running or playing soccer in the early morning or evening. Anyway, don't let the heat stop your exercise plans.

Don't eat too much meat. Choose some fresh fruit. It's better to put your focus on talking with your family and friends, not on food. Also, don't eat too many frozen things like ice cream.

    A. Beat the heat

    B. Make a work or study plan

    C. Think about what to eat

    D. Stay busy

    E. Put everything in a schedule

I was a schoolgirl in Grade 7 when Danny came to my school and became one of my classmates. He was handsome with blond hair, so many girls in my class liked him very much. Every day, his parents picked him up in an old car. We all realized he was from a poor family. I had a poor family as well, but I just hid it from everyone. I was afraid the kids in my class would leave me if they knew the truth.

One day, our teacher, Mr. Sims, announced that we would have a field trip. We decided to go to an amusement park. My classmates were excited. I sat back and looked at them, knowing that my parents did not have the money to send me. To my surprise, Danny stood up and said simply, "I won't go with you. My dad hurt his back and lost his job. I am not asking my parents for money."

"Danny, I'm very proud of you for understanding the situation that your parents are in," Mr. Sims replied. "But the trip is at the end of the month, so we have plenty of time to raise money for it." While walking home from school that day, I noticed three boys talking with Danny. I was a little worried that they were giving him a hard time. But as I got closer, I found they were discussing how to raise money for the trip.

By standing up and admitting(承认)he was poor, Danny changed my life. I no longer felt I had to lie about my family's situation. As for Danny, I will remember his courage and honesty forever.
