As a winner of the NSLI-Y Scholarship in high school, and then the Critical Language Scholarship in college, I lived in China for two summers with host families, studying Chinese for nine hours a day. Tack on to that the approximately 2, 000 classroom hours I spent learning Chinese as an undergraduate, and it seems fair to say that a small fortune of resources has been invested in my Chinese ability.
Yet even with so much practice, I am not still achieving fluency, and it's unclear whether I'll use my language skills regularly in my career. This leads me to reflect: What is it that drives me to dill tones and memorize characters?
Many people are quick to point out the value of language skills in an increasingly competitive workforce. However language is about much more than just the ability to communicate. Foreign language study is tied to increased levels of empathy (同理心), enhanced cognitive development, and more creative insight on the human condition. Increasingly, research shows that these benefits also apply to those with exposure to multiple languages, and not just those who achieve fluency.
A beneficial future for the US and China will be built upon understanding, respect and recognition. Language exchange can provide cultural insight and strengthen the common ground we stand on.
It is not the economic potential of my language skills that leads me to persist Studying Chinese is the most modest way I can think of to approach China, a nation with over 5, 000 years of complex history. From this point, I have experienced the beauty, hospitality of China. And my experience of studying Chinese has helped me form a sense of curiosity and a commitment to understanding and respect-and that's a start.
For or Against?—That Is the Question
Andy is the most unreasonable and he makes me so angry that I could even scream sometimes! Of course, I sort of have to love him because he is my twin brother. Andy and Amy (that is me) have the same curly hair and dark eyes and are equally stubborn. Yet, on most issues we usually take opposite positions.
Just this week in our school, there was a heated discussion on whether to adopt a school dress code. Every student would be required to wear a uniform. The teachers are divided: Some are in favor of the uniforms while others are opposed. The principal has asked the students to express their opinions by voting on the issue before decisions are made. But she will have the final word on the dress code.
I think a dress code is a good idea. The reason is simple. The less T have to decide first thing in the morning, the better I can't tell you how many mornings I look into my closet and just stare, unable to decide what to wear.
Andy is shocked at my opinion. Last night, he even dragged out my parents' high school photo albums to show me how brilliant they looked without uniforms! He also declared, "Bruce Springsteen never wore a school uniform. Bob Dylan wouldn't have been caught dead in a school uniform! Besides, when I am feeling political, I want to be able to wear clothes made of natural undyed fibers, sewn or assembled in countries that do not pollute the environment or exploit child labor. If I have to wear a uniform, I won't feel like me!"
To that I replied, "So your personal heroes didn't wear school uniforms. But they went to high school about a million years ago! l feel sorry for you since I had no idea that your ego(自我)is so fragile that it would be completely destroyed by a uniform. "That really made him angry and he shouted, "You're just copying what you hear that new music teacher saying because you are crazy about him!"
Fortunately the bell rang before we could do each other physical harm, and we went to our separate classes. The vote for or against uniforms took place later that day. The results of the vote and the principal's decision will be announced next week. I wonder what it will be. I know how l voted, and I'm pretty sure l know how Andy voted. How would you vote-for or against?
In 1926, US automaker Henry Ford shortened its employees' workweek from six eight-hour days to five, with no pay cuts. It's something workers and labor unions had been calling for. Ford wasn't responding to worker demands: he was being a businessman. He expected increased productivity and knew workers with more time and money would buy and use the products they were making. It was a way of encouraging consumerism and productivity to increase profits, and it succeeded.
Since standardization of the 40-hour workweek in the mid-20th century, everything has changed but the hours. If anything, many people are working even longer hours, especially in North America. This has a severe influence on human health and well-being, as well as the environment. Until the Second World War, it was common for one person in a family, usually the oldest male, to work full-time. Now, women make up 42 percent of the world's full-time workforce. Technology has made a lot of work unnecessary, with computers and robots doing many tasks previously performed by humans.
Well into the 21st century, we continue to work the same long hours as 20th century laborers, using up ever more of Earth's supply to produce more goods that we must keep working to buy, use and replace in a seemingly endless cycle of hard work and consumption. It's time to pause and consider better ways to live like shifting from fossil-fueled lifestyles with which our consumer-based workweeks are connected.
The UK think tank, New Economics (经济学)Foundation, argues that a standard 21-hour workweek would address a number of interconnected problems: "overwork, unemployment, over-consumption, high carbon emissions, low well-being, and the lack of time to live sustainably, to care for each other, and simply to enjoy life".
Economic systems that require constant growth on a finite(有限的)planet don't make sense. It's time for a change in our economic thinking.
Most students feel more anxiety before and during an exam. Normal levels of stress can help you work, think faster and more effectively, and generally help you perform better in exams. It can cause your mind to "blank out" or make you unable to concentrate. Here are some strategies to help you keep your anxiety to a manageable level.
The better prepared you get for an exam, the less anxiety you'll suffer from.Six weeks before the exams is probably soon enough for the end of year exams, depending on where you are in your studies and what year you are in. Maintain your health-eat a balanced diet, get enough sleep and exercise regularly. Look at exams as an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills you've been learning throughout the term. The night before an exam, calmly review material one final time, organize all your supplies (your pens, calculator, eraser, and so on), and get a good night's sleep. Get to the exam on time. Don't talk to people outside the room because their nervousness could be "catching".
If you're afraid you will forget important facts, write them down as soon as you get into exam. When needed take a short relaxation break by closing your eyes, stretching(伸展) and relaxing muscles, and breathing deeply. If you start to panic, tell yourself. "I will stay calm. I can handle this." Read directions carefully and stay focused on the exam. Just keep working. Never leave early yourself.
A. Staying positive is also important.
B. Pay no attention to students who finish early.
C. However, too much anxiety can lower your performance.
D. Spend some time thinking about what is causing the anxiety.
E. The key to reducing exam anxiety is to start your revision early.
F. As for anxiety during an exam, just follow the following strategies
G. Remember that most people feel tense at this point-it is only natural.
Lots of kids set up lemonade stands in the summer. For many it's a first step toward learning what it means to1your own money. For 11-year-old Cartier Carey it was a2 to do a lot more. That's because Carey isn't using his3to open a first savings account. Instead, he's4 it back into his community. His goal is to help single mothers in need with all the stress and5uncertainty brought on by the pandemic, Carey decided to focus on the basics: diapers and wipes.

Drunk driving is a very serious issue in China. It is(legal) to drive after drinking alcohol, but there is still drunk driving, (cause) deaths and injuries. The deadly result (raise) heated debates on whether offenders deserve more severe punishment for these years.
There are a number of reasons the increase of drunk driving in China. Firstly, China's(high) sociable but sometimes excessive(过量的)drinking habits should(mention). People often persuade others(drink) more, even if they know their friends may drive after drinking. Secondly, the (press) on drunk driving is not heavy enough. Many people argue thatcost of drunk driving is too low, so drunk drivers do it again and again.
More severe punishment is definitely necessary to prevent drunk driving. drives after drinking should be severely punished. But we also need to attach greater importance to education. Anyway, prevention is always the best measure.

Dear friends,
……
The Students' Union
When I was ten years old, I was a grade four primary school student in a small town. I had a happy time at school because I had a few good friends there. We usually spent our spare time together, doing our homework, going to the amusement park, playing with our pets, and sharing our happiness and sorrows together. But everything changed when my parents decided to change their jobs and moved to a bigger city. I even had no time to say good-bye to my old friends and teachers.
As I moved to the new city, I began my school life in a totally new school with new surroundings, new teachers and new classmates. During the first week, I felt lonely when I was at school. My classmates knew each other, but they didn't know me, which added to my loneliness and sadness. That week day after day, I was sitting on my seat, pretending to be reading. How I secretly wished that someone would come to me and introduce himself to me or even play a trick on me, but disappointingly, nobody came.
Then one day, when my parents sent me to the bus station and said good bye to me, I didn't get on the bus to school as usual. Instead, I walked and walked on the street, looking at the beautiful window displays and forgetting everything, with no worry about the new school, new teachers and new classmates. Then my empty stomach stopped me and I used my pocket money to have a bowl of noodles in a small restaurant. It was noon at the time, but still I didn't want to go to school or go home. So I went to a park and sat on the bench, staring at the sky. And then t had a nap. When I woke up, I decided to go back to my hometown, where my former teachers and friends lived. So I went to the railway station. There l was stopped by a policeman, who asked for my ID card, which I didn't have at the time. Then the policeman called someone and I was asked to stay with him.
