Wang Lei: Do you have any plans for Sunday, Han Ning?
Han Ning: Yes.It's his first time to be in Changchun. Wang Lei: Cool!
Han Ning: In fact, I don't. Maybe we'll go to the park.
Wang Lei: To the park? I don't think that's a good idea.
Han Ning: Really? Then where else can we go? The cinema? The Natural Museum? Wang Lei: Keep thinking, Han Ning.
Han Ning: Oh, come on! Just help me, Wang Lei.
Wang Lei: Why don't you show him around Changchun City Planning Exhibition Hall?

As a 32-year-old man, I was sitting on my mom's sofa and waiting for the pain(疼痛) in my back to ease(减轻). I 1 my job, so my wife, our baby boy and me had to live with my parents. We slept in my old bedroom, and I was feeling2.Thankfully, I had one new 3: helping my son learn how to walk. Anytime he took a few steps, however, he would fall down and4.
I had to bend(弯腰)over and 5his hand while he walked along. But my 6didn't deal with it too well. It really hurt.
As I sat there with my eyes closed, I7heard my mother said: “Joe, look!” I opened my eyes and watched my son grab(抓住)the coffee table, pull(拉) 8up and smile.
Next with a giggle(咯咯地笑), he started walking around it, keeping his hands on it 9balance(平衡). Finally, when he reached the end of it, he took two big10and made it to the wall. Then he started walking down the hall with his hands balancing on the wall the 11 way. I laughed and cheered. Suddenly, I wasn't feeling so 12anymore for losing my job, because my boy had learned to walk.Learning to love in this world is a lot like first learning to13. We often fall and cry. However, 14we try again, we will find our own feet and know how to love. Don't be15to step out and fall.
Have you heard of pneumonic plague(肺鼠疫)? It's a kind of serious disease(疾病)that killed tens of millions of people in the 1450s in Europe. In 2020, two people from Inner Mongolia got this terrible disease, which caught people's attention again. Then what can we do to stop ourselves from catching it?
* Care about health
The World Health Organization( WHO) says if we want to stay away from a dangerous disease, we should care more about our health before it appears.
According to the latest study, some factors(因素)decide people's health situations.
As we can see, our lifestyle plays an important role in our health. In other words, we will be half successful in having good health if we have healthy living habits, such as eating healthy food, doing exercise and having enough sleep.
* Care about hygiene(卫生)
To stay away from diseases like pneumonic plague, it's important for us to wash our hands often. We should also keep clear of mice.
Qomolangma is the world's highest mountain. You may have learned from your textbooks that its height is 8,844 meters. But not all sides are in agreement on this. Different researchers have give different results. Also, the height of the mountain can change over time.
That's why a 30-member Chinese survey team set out to reach the peak of Qomolangma to re-measure(重新测量)its height on May 6th, 2020.
It is not an easy task. The air temperature on the mountain is -29℃ — four degrees lower than in Antarctica — and strong winds blow all the time. In such bad conditions, surveying drones(无人机)cannot work at the peak of the mountain. That's why it's still necessary to sendhuman experts to the peak to get reliable(可靠的)results. But does a difference of a few meters really matter when it comes to a high mountain?
In fact, measuring the height of Qomolangma is about more than just getting one exact(确切的)number. Mount Qomolangma is at the point where the Eurasian plate(欧亚板块)meets the Indian plate. It formed 38 million years ago as the two plates hit each other. Changes in the peak's height can show whether the two plates are heading toward or away from each other. This can help us understand the movement of Earth's crust(地壳).
The survey team will also get firsthand information about environmental conditions at the top of the mountain. This will help us understand how climate(气候)change has affected(影 响)the Tibet-Qinghai Plateau.
Facing social anxiety(社交恐惧症)
Do you have any experiences like these? When the teacher asks if someone could speak in
front of the class, you low your head. When you go to the restroom or dining hall, you always try to find someone to go with you because you are afraid of being seen alone.
Well, many people have these kinds of experiences. They are feeling social anxiety, or worrying about things like talking, going to a party or being the center of attention. A recent survey from China Youth Daily showed that about 45 percent of the 1,544 interviewees(受访者)said they experienced social anxiety.
Stefan G. Hofmann, an expert from Boston University, the US said that social anxiety is probably “a result of the fear that we will not be welcome”. For Chinese kids, there's another reason for their anxiety. Shu Man from East China Jiaotong University said, “Most of them are the only child in their families, so they don't have many chances to practice their social skills.”
“However, you don't have to worry too much about social anxiety. You only need to get help from a doctor if you can't live a normal life,” said Li Songwei from Tsinghua University. Shu Man advised that you should go to public places more often and try thinking about something happy when you are really nervous.
Some years ago, our head teacher Mrs. Waters, decided to start a school newspaper and get some students to do it.We liked her idea.
Some of my friends joined the newspaper team soon. I'd always loved creative writing and drawing cartoons, so I joined the team too.They thought I was doing something meaningful and creative. And they often came along to give me advice.
My first job was writing a report about a sports event.Dad told me it was similar in some ways to writing a story — getting information in the right order. With his help, I did a good job on my report. Sometimes the team didn't use what I'd written or my cartoons, but I didn't mind.
I'm now one of the editors(编辑). We decide what goes into the newspaper.
I'm busy with these things every day, but I really enjoy doing them.
A. My parents were happy about it. B. I just told myself to do better the next time. C. We also correct(改正)mistakes in people's articles. D. It was hard for me because I never wrote anything like that. E. She thought the newspaper would help us learn more about school life |
I've just spent a year as a volunteer in Uganda. And it has made a big difference to my life. I had lived a very quiet life in England. I had never left the country, never been on a plane even. And suddenly there I was on a plane and landed at Entebbe Airport in 40℃. I was met by an old man, and then taken into the bush. It was quite an amazing change — not like anything I had ever met in England.
In fact, at the beginning I was very homesick and I just wanted to go back to England, to my friends and family and the life I knew so well. But very quickly I became very interested in what I was doing and by what I was able to offer. People had so little there, and I was able to help them in some ways. It completely changed my life.
The people I was with didn't have much money, but their lives were rich in other ways —family life was very important. But living in the bush was difficult; we were fifteen miles from the nearest post box and fifteen miles from the nearest road. The village was right on the banks of the Nile.
I worked as a doctor seeing about sixty people a day in a small village. The main problem was that there were almost no resources(资源). That made the work very difficult. But there were good things too. I made some very good friends during my time in Uganda.
