Many families take their children on vacation. They will usually travel for a few days or weeks during school breaks. But Julie and Tim Rivenbark planned a longer vacation with their two children—the family is on a one-year trip around the world. They consider visiting 30 countries in all.
Right now, the four travellers are about halfway through their trip. Ms. Rivenbark says they are trying to see as much of the world as they can.
She says, "We have been through Europe and southern Africa. Now we are kind of working our way through Asia. So we have been to a lot of big cities, like Dubai, Rome and Bangkok." The family have wonderful memories and experiences which they will never forget. They have spent time floating in kayaks (独木舟) in Italy, flying in hot air balloons in Myanmar(缅甸),counting stars on the Everest Base Camp in Nepal(尼泊尔珠峰大本营) and going on safari in South Africa. They have ridden on different animals, especially ostriches(鸵鸟).
Among those interesting experiences, which impressed them most is meeting new people. "People have been truthful and friendly, very welcoming and love our kids—regarding us as their friends," said Mr. Rivenbark.
It took the family a year to search information and prepare for the trip. The couple cleared out all of the things they don't need and sold their house and car. They carry small bags filled with lightweight clothing and whatever else they need. Ms. Rivenbark says she enjoys this kind of life and she does not feel bad to part with the things she has brought back home.
"I want my kids to have a wonderful childhood. I hope these sweet memories will become one of the most important parts in their life."

Do you know the Silk Road? It is the of different roads that connected Europe, Africa and Asia long ago. People arrived at these different places along these in the old days. Zhang Qian was a famous traveler of the Silk Road. He was probably the first person to back good information about the central Asian lands to China.
In 138 BC, Emperor Wu of Han sent Zhang Qian to Yue-chi to for help to fight against Xiongnu. But on his way there, the Xiongnu people caught him. Zhang had to stay with them about 10 years before he got away. When Zhang finally reached Yue-chi, he was to find that the people there didn't want to fight against Xiongnu. On his journey back to China, Zhang Qian found a lot of good things and brought back.
Later, Emperor Wu of Han sent Zhang to the West 。Zhang's journey to the West helped develop the international(国际的) business, especially in silk between China the West. That's the Ancient Silk Road.
Now the old Silk Road are still used, they are crossed by trains, not by camels or horses. People along the road still do business with each other. Now it is called New Silk Road. Another saying is One Belt, One Road(一带一路).
In our country, parents pay so much attention to their children that they would like to help their children to do everything, including study and work. Gradually, some of the children get used to depending on their parents and family members. As a result, these children lose the ability to face their lives by themselves. They don't know how to solve problems independently. It is not good for their children. Our parents should learn to help children to be independent.
Here are some suggestions for our parents. To start with, it is quite important for our parents to realize that our children will grow up and have their own ideas and thoughts as time goes by. Parents should encourage their kids to make some decisions by themselves. Parents should give their children more chances to experience the world and life around them. Secondly, our parents should believe that our children have enough ability to deal with their personal matters. Parents should ask their children to do some family chores properly because it is a good chance to train them. Of course, I am not saying that our parents should not help our children when they are getting into trouble, but I mean that our parents should give our children a chance to deal with some matters by themselves.
To be independent is important for children because only independent people can live and enjoy a full and meaningful life.
