Newton was a quiet boy. Having lost his father before he was born, he grew up with his grandparents. At 17, soon after he finished schooling, his mother decided that he would be trained to take care of their family farm. But instead of watching sheep, young Newton would spend his time making small tools. His head teacher saw the genius in him and asked his mother to send him to the university. Newton set out for Cambridge in June, 1661, and began his career in scientific research.
Newton was always trying to understand and explain a lot of things in nature. To test a question about colors, he would stare at(凝视) the sun with one eye until all the colors changed. As a result, he had to stay in the dark for several days before his eye returned to normal. Newton was the first to show us that white light is made up of colors mixed together. He was also the first person to understand the rainbow and explain how it forms.
A story goes like this: One day, an apple fell on Newton's head, and it was then that Newton realized that the apple fell towards the Earth and didn't go anywhere else. He thought to himself, "How did this happen?" After doing some experiments,he later knew all objects (物体) always fall towards the Earth's center because the Earth attracts them. He realized that every object in the universe attracts every other object towards it. Then Newton discovered the law of universal gravitation.
Newton was an English physicist, mathematician and astronomer. Because of the significant work Newton has done, he is widely considered as one of the greatest scientists of all time.
"Funny or die" has a whole new meaning, thanks to a study. Women with a strong sense of humor were found to live longer, although they had some illnesses such as heart problems and infection (感染). Happy men seemed to be protected against infection.
The researchers reported the findings from a 15-year study among 53, 556 women and men in their country. The study was mainly about the connection between the sense of humor and death. The team studied the influence(影响) of humor on people's ways of thinking and social skills. Besides, they studied death under different conditions: heart problems, infection and other health problems.
The findings showed that for women, those who had high scores on a humorous way of thinking had 48% less risk(风险) of death from all causes. These women also had 73% lower risk of death from heart problems and 83% lower risk of death from infection. For men, a connection was found only for the risk of death from infection - those with high humor scores had 74% less risk. There searchers said the differences between women and men could be caused by a small fall in humors cores as the men grew older. No connection was found for the influence of humor on social skills.
"The humorous way of thinking may influence the way people deal with things, "said the co-researcher Sven Svebak." It may help reduce fighting in people's daily life. "Although the sense of humor is natural, it can also be developed through social activities.
"I think that children whose parents have no sense of humor arc less likely to develop their sense of humor when they grow up, "Sven Svebak said. "But if you had a humorless childhood, never fear - studies show people can learn to be humorous at any age."
Zhong Kaitong, a fourth-grader from Guangzhou, enjoyed a fun vacation this summer.
A new guideline(指导方针) introduced by central government on July 24 helped Zhong enjoy some free time during the summer. The guideline aims to ease the schoolwork burden (负担) on primary and junior high school students. What's more, after-school training are also regulated so that students can enjoy their school life.
According to the guideline, children below the third grade will not have homework anymore.
Off-campus tutoring organizations(校外培训机构) are not allowed to offer teaching ahead of time. No subject-based training will be allowed on weekends, national holidays or during winter and summer vacations. According to Global Times, more than 75 percent of children in Chinese cities from grades 1 to 12 are taking private(私人的) tutoring courses.
" Some training organizations have made money from parents' anxieties (焦虑), "said Chen Xianzhe, a professor at South China Normal University. "The guideline is meant to relax parents and society as a whole."
"But this does not mean the tutoring courses will completely disappear, since there are still exams, " said Chu Zhaohui, a senior researcher at the National Institute of Education Sciences. One-on-one or one-on-two tutoring might see a rise due to this need.
