The first astronauts
Since the earliest times, people have looked up at the stars, the moon and the planets. Today people use modern machines1at the sky. This is very different from the situation 2years ago when people could only use their eyes. Perhaps they dreamed of 3 the universe. When did humans first go into space? The story began not so very long ago, 4the first astronauts were not people—they were animals.
Scientists wanted to make travelling to space as 5as possible for humans. So they decided to experiment with animals and test 6in spaceflights. Insects, mice, frogs, dogs and monkeys were some of the animals7first went into space. Many of them 8, but they helped to make space travel safer for humans. For their great service, we 9forget these animals. Albert I was the first monkey to go into space in 1949. Sadly he died10his space ship landed back on Earth.

I had the meanest mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal and eggs. When others had sugary drinks and candy for lunch, I had to eat sandwich. But at least I wasn't alone. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mothers as I did.
My mother knew where we were at all times. She knew who our friends were. We had to wear clean clothes and take a bath every day. We had to be in bed by 9:00 pm. and up 8:00 am. We couldn't sleep till noon like our friends. So while they slept, our mother gave us work to do. We had to wash dishes, make our beds and learn to cook. 1believed she lay awake at night thinking up mean things to do for us.
Through the years, things didn't improve a lot. We could not lie in bed "sick" like our friends did in order to miss school. My mother was the meanest mother. Out off our children, a couple of us went on to higher education. None of us have ever done bad things. She forced us to grow up into educated and honest people. I am trying to raise my children like this. I will feel proud when my children call me mean
Because, you see, I am thankful that I had the meanest mother in the whole world. Mother's love to their children can be rather deep, yet this love must help the child grow away from the mother, and to become fully independent. That is where true love lies.
In many countries around the world May 1 is a holiday. Labour Day, or Workers' Day, is an international holiday that honours working men and women, and the jobs they do.
During the late 1880s, in many parts of the world, people worked for fourteen to sixteen hours a day in factories, and earned very little money. In America and Canada, people get together to make their workplace better. These groups of people formed unions (团体). The union leaders asked company directors for shorter work days and higher salaries (工资), but many of then refused to accept the ideas."
On May 1, 1886, men and women in the United States and Canada stopped work and marched through cities and towns to try and force bosses to let them work an eight-hour day. In the city of Chicago, several people died in fights with the police.
Over the next few years, people in cities around the world stopped working every May 1 to honour workers everywhere. By the early twentieth century, the first of May was a national holiday in many countries.
However, in the United States and Canada,May 1 is not a holiday. North Americans celebrate Labour Day on the first Monday in September. Today in the Unites States, Labour Day is mostly about having fun. People enjoy a long weekend, and often celebrate by having barbecues or picnics with friends or family, In many parts of the Unites States, Labour Day is also the last day of summer vacation, and the students return to school the next day.
①People worked for long time but made little money.
②People stopped working on May 1th to honor workers.
③Working people set up unions.
Mona Island is an amazing place to take a vacation. Some of the animals living there can't be found anywhere else in the world. There are beautiful beaches and caves to explore. The sea around the island has colorful fishes.
Mona Island is very small. The government of Puerto Rico takes care of the island and has made it a natural reserve. That means the island's animals and plants are protected from being harmed by people. Mona Island is different from most places because people are not allowed to live there. Only a few park rangers (公园管理员) are able to stay.
The park workers' job is to keep Mona Island safe and beautiful. They insist that rules are followed. One rule is that only 100 people at a time can visit the island. That way, the park rangers can make sure the land and animals remain safe.
On the island, visitors can go to see the Mona Island iguana(美洲热带大蜥蜴)which lives only on Mona Island.
Also, visitors can come to the island to get a close-up view of many kinds of fish and other sea life. They can swim far below the surface. They use special equipment to be able to breathe underwater. Through the clear water, divers can see the bright colors of the fish.
Visitors can also explore caves. Some of the caves ' even have paintings and drawings on the walls. This artwork was made by the Arawak and Taino Indians who lived on the island hundreds of years ago.
After a full day of fun activities, visitors can settle in, listen to the night sounds, and view the stars in the huge sky. Because the island is far away from other places, it is surrounded by darkness, and the stars are easier to see. Visitors say that watching the stars is amazing. It's the perfect end to a perfect day.
