Flower Fun
Aaaaaahhhhh! It was that time of year again time to plant flowers in the first season of the year. Christina and her dad were trying to decide what kind of flowers to plant this year. Her dad showed her an ad in the morning paper. He wanted Christina to check it out so she could help him decide what they should buy. The two always like to surprise Christina's mom with beautiful flowers before her "big day" in May. Christina was surprised to see Flower Power was having a sale. She knew they had better hurry to the store.
Hi Sandra, You'll never guess where I'm writing this email from! A cave dwellings! You know we're on holiday in Spain, right? Well, we spent a few days in Barcelona first. It's a great place and we had a good time (though one day I didn't feel very well - I think I ate too much ice cream the day before!).Anyway, when we left Barcelona, we came to spend a few days in Granada, another city in Spain. And guess what? We couldn't get a hotel - too many tourists and not enough beds! Then someone said, 'Why don't you try the cave dwellings in Guadix? We thought he was joking. Cave dwellings? But here we are — and enjoy ourselves a lot! You'll see that every cave is unique. You'll enjoy the temperature in the cave. It's around 18 - 20℃, even on a hot summer day! You'll sleep better in the cave than in a normal hotel. You can't imagine how relaxed you will feel. Tomorrow we are going to visit the Alhambra in Granada. We are enjoying it so much that we don't know when we're going to leave. We're never going to have enough time to explore everything. Take care! Ben |
Charlie Chaplin, who died in 1977, would be 132 years old this year. Chaplin was one of the greatest and widely loved silent film stars. He was born into a poor family in South London. His mother started out as a singer and actress, but later lost her voice. Chaplin and his brother had to make money for their family any way they could. He tried many jobs during his lifetime.
"l was newsvendor, printer, toymaker, doctor's boy, but ... I never lost my dream of becoming an actor," Chaplin said. After years of trying to find acting work, he finally got work at Keystone Studios. This would change his life forever. He went to the US in 1910, and in 1914 hew as in his first Hollywood film. In those days, the film industry was very new. Chaplin's early comedies were in black and white and they were 'silent'- there were no words or music.
Chaplin's favourite character was 'the tramp'— a little man with big trousers, an old black hat and a sad face. Chaplin made his character funnier by giving him a mismatched look. He made many famous films. Modern Times (1936) was his first 'talking' film. Besides acting, Chaplin wrote, directed and even made music for many of his films-he was even a violinist and a pianist. He loved everything about filmmaking. His love for filmmaking made a great difference in his life.
Chaplin decided to leave the USA in 1952 and his new home was in Switzerland. He died there on Christmas Day at the age of 88.He was silent film's first superstar, and maybe the only one that most people remember from that time.

Hi, there! OUR last class trip to Lake Windermere was just wonderful. It took us almost four hours to get there, but it was worth the long trip to get there! We had lunch near the lake. In the evening, we got into our tents — under thousands of bright stars. I am looking forward to our next class trip in the summer holiday. How was your class trip last Friday and what did you do? What are you going to do for your next class trip? Write soon. Yours, Laura
