Mother's Day and Father's Day are two big national holidays in many western countries. And it's interesting because they are not the same in every country. In England, Mothering Sunday is in March. In America and Germany and many other countries, it's one Sunday in May. Father's Day is in the middle of June. How do you celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day? Let's learn something more about it from the following introduction.

    Ann

In England, we call Mother's Day Mothering Sunday, because it's always on a Sunday. I don't really know the origin of it but I remember that my mother had a cup of tea early in the morning. And then we would go to church. And at the end of the church service, the children would collect a daffodil(水仙花) and take it back and give it to our mother who would normally be sitting in the service in the church. And really that's all we did to celebrate the day.

    Tony

I remember taking cups of tea to my mother. The idea in general is that the washing-up would be done; perhaps some cooking would be done on Mother's Day. We would try to relieve her of all those jobs to make it a special day for her, so that whenever she looked around, there was something to eat, something to drink, or something to read, or something interesting for her to do.

    Bill

Father's Day is always in June, a Sunday in the middle of June. On Father's Day, the idea is to find something fun that children could do with his father together. I remember going to baseball games. I think that on Father's Day it's particularly focused on doing things together because that is supposed to be relaxing and fun for Dad.

    1. (1) In ________, Mothering Sunday is in March.
      A . Germany B . England C . America D . China
    2. (2) What did Bill remember doing on Father's Day?
      A . Doing housework. B . Eating outside.    C . Going to the church. D . Watching baseball games.
    3. (3) What's the text mainly about?
A . The history of some national holidays. B . The stories of some interesting holidays. C . How to celebrate Mother's and Father's Day. D . How to give thanks to mothers and parents.

The Tomatina Festival(西红柿节)is a festival that is held in a town named Bunol in Spain, on which people throw tomatoes for fun. It is held on the last Wednesday of August each year.

In 1945, during a parade(游行) in the town one day, young men who wanted to be in the parade started a fight in the town square. They used tomatoes as weapons(武器). This is the most popular story about how the Tomatina Festival started.

At around 10:00 am on Wednesday, activities that are organized to celebrate the festival begin. The first one is climbing a pole with a ham on top. When a person is climbing, some people sing and dance. When the person drops the ham off the pole, the tomato fight starts. The tomatoes come from Extremadura. The tomatoes there are less expensive and are grown specially for the festival. The number of tomatoes used is about 150, 000. After exactly one hour, the fight ends. The whole square becomes red because there is tomato juice everywhere. Then hoses(水龙带) are used to clean the square and to wash away the tomato juice on people's bodies. After that, the town goes back to the way it was.

The local government has made some rules for the safety of people. One of them is as follows: People have to squash(把……挤软) the tomatoes before throwing in order not to hurt other people.
