Walk around the city of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and you may see a green animal named Sluggo and a flying pig named Philomena. You might even see street artist David Zinn drawing them using only sidewalk chalk and charcoal (炭笔).
At the age of 12, David began working as an artist. His dad was writing a computer instruction and worried that it would be boring to read. So he asked David to draw pictures of turtles (the name of the computer program) to explain it. The publisher liked his drawings, and soon David had the job of drawing more turtles in action. "I learned a great lesson, which was that, to make money as an artist, I couldn't always draw what I wanted," he says. "I had to figure out how to draw a turtle drinking tea and other things like that. "
David worked for 20 years as a commercial (商业的) artist, but he often felt cooped up (禁锢) sitting at a computer for 10 hours a day. Then, on a sunny afternoon about ten years ago, he brought some chalk and started drawing on the sidewalk. That's when Sluggo came to life.
"One of the reasons I like to put art on the street is to take people by surprise," he says. "I can have fun drawing, and knowing it will be washed away helps me not think too much. It frees me up. "
It takes David about two hours to complete one drawing. He uses a lot of sidewalk characteristics in his street art. It can be difficult to draw on surfaces that are not flat. He has to notice where shadows will land so they won't destroy the 3D drawings he creates.
Today, more and more people are accepting and looking for his work. David's artwork can also be found across the country and even throughout the world. Photos of his drawings have been shown at many universities and museums.
There are various reasons why people travel. Some tourists go to see battlefields or other historic remains. Others are looking for culture, or simply want to have their pictures taken in front of famous places. Most European tourists are looking for a sunny beach to lie on.
Northern Europeans are willing to pay a lot of money for the sun because they have so little of it. People of cities like London, Copenhagen and Amsterdam spend much of their winter in the dark because the days are so short, and much of the rest of the year in the rain. This is the reason why the Mediterranean(地中海)has always attracted them. Every summer many people travel to Mediterranean resorts(度假胜地)and beaches for their vacation. They all come for the same reason: sun!
The huge crowds mean lots of money for the economics of Mediterranean countries. Italy's 30,000 hotels are booked without a break every summer. And 13 million people camp on French beaches, parks and roadsides. About 37 million tourists visit there yearly, or one tourist for each person living in Spain.
But there are signs that the area is getting more tourism than it can deal with. The Mediterranean is already one of the most polluted seas on earth. None of these, however, is ruining anyone's fun. Obviously, they don't go there for clean water. They allow traffic jams and seem to like crowded beaches. They don't even mind the pollution. No matter how dirty the water is, the coastline still looks beautiful. And as long as the sun shines, it's still better than sitting in the cold rain in Berlin, London, or Oslo.
Older women who walk a little over three kilometers each day might live longer than less active women of the same age, a new study suggests.
Many Americans hoping to stay healthy set a daily goal of 10, 000 steps, or about eight kilometers. They often have this goal because they are wearing electronic devices which set that target, note researchers in the United States. Their findings appeared recently in the publication JAMA Internal Medicine.
But it is not clear how much intensity(强度)or speed matter when counting the health benefits of every step, the researchers write. They add that 10,000 steps per day might not be the right goal for everyone.
For the study, researchers observed 17,000 women, all in their early 70s. They asked the women to wear accelerometers for at least four days. Accelerometers are small devices that measure the number of steps and the intensity of movement. The researchers followed up with the women much later, around 4. 3 years later, on average. Since the beginning of the study, 504 women had died. Compared to women who took no more than 2, 718 steps daily, the women who took at least 4,363 steps per day were 41 percent less likely to die.
"Even a modest amount of steps is associated with lower death rates," said I-Min Lee, the lead writer of a report on the study. "The rate of stepping did not matter in these older women: it was the number of steps that mattered.
The study had a few limitations. For example, the researchers only measured women's movements once, at the start of the study period. It is possible that the women's behaviors changed over time. Still, the results are "good news for older adults who may have difficulty walking at faster paces, "said Keith Diaz, a researcher at Columbia University. He was not involved in the study.
"Any walking is better than nothing," Diaz said by email. "With even small amounts of walking, your risk of death will be sharply reduced "For those who have difficulty walking, other research shows that any form of aerobic activity provides health benefits," he added. "Swimming, bicycling or any form of activity that is continuous in nature will provide health benefits.
The jobs of the future have not yet been invented. By helping them develop classic skills that will serve them well no matter what the future holds.
1 Curiosity
Your children need to be deeply curious. Encourage kids to cook with you. Ask kids, "What ingredients(配料) can we add to make these pancakes even better next time?" And then try them out. What could we try next time?
2 Creativity
True creativity is the ability to take something existing and create something new from it. We can give kids chances to think about materials in new ways. Experimenting with materials to create something new can go a long way in helping them develop their creativity.
3 Interpersonal Skills
Understanding how others feel can be so challenge for kids. We know what's going on inside our own head, but what about others? We can do this in real life or ask questions about characters in stories. "Why do you think she's crying?" "Can you tell how that man is feeling by looking at his face?" "If someone were to do that to you, how would you feel?"
4 Self Expression
Being able to communicate ideas in a meaningful way is a valuable skill. . You may find that your child is attracted by one more than another.
A. Did those ingredients make the pancakes better?
B. And we can't ignore science education.
C There are a dozen different things you can do with them.
D. So how can we help our kids prepare for jobs that don't yet exist?
E. Being able to read people helps kids from misreading a situation and jumping to false conclusions.
F. Gardening is another great activity for helping kids develop this skill. .
G. There are many ways to express thoughts and ideas—music, acting, drawing, building, photography
A man was employed to paint a boat. He brought paint and 1 and began to paint the boat as the owner wanted. While painting, he 2 there was a hole in the body of the boat and decided to repair it. When he finished painting, he received his 3 and left.
The next day, the owner of the boat visited the painter and4 him with a cheque (支票), much higher than what he was paid for the painting work. The painter was 5.
"You've already paid me for painting the boat, sir!" he said.
"This is not for the paint job. It's for repairing the 6 in the boat. "
"Ah! But it was such a small service. " the man said. "Certainly it's not worth paying me such a high amount for something so 7!"
"My dear friend," the owner said, "You don't understand. Let me tell you 8 happened. When I asked you to paint the boat, I 9 to mention the hole. When the boat dried, my kids took it and 10 a fishing trip. They did not know that there was a hole there. I was not at home at the time. So when I 11 and noticed they had taken the boat, I was hopeless. Imagine my 12 and joy when I saw them returning safely from fishing. "
"Then, I examined the boat and found that you had repaired the hole! You now see what you did? You 13 the life of my children!"
Each of us has a moral duty to offer help, wipe tears, listen carefully and repair all the "hole" we 14 in our life journey, because a small act will make a big 15 in the future.

This army of clay statues is believed (be) as effective and strong as any real-life army and can protect the Emperor and his tomb.
, no one in modern times knew about the tomb or the terracotta statues until 1974, when some farmers discovered the tomb while (dig) a well nearby. After years of excavation, three underground vaults(坑) (official) opened to tourists in 1979,1989 and 1994 respectively, showing thousands of terracotta warriors, horses and chariots. Since then, the Terracotta Warrior Museum in Xi'an (become) a tourist destination for millions of people from home and abroad.
