Imagine you're enjoying dinner with your friends at a nice restaurant. You're having a great time when suddenly you hear a phone ringing at the table next to you. A man takes out his phone and starts talking about problems he's having with his girlfriend. He keeps talking for almost ten minutes! How will you feel? Maybe you will feel uncomfortable, but you can do nothing about it. This happens all the time, not only in restaurants, but also on buses, at the cinema, everywhere!

Cell phones are useful in our daily lives. But be careful not to be noisy phone users and disturb others. You are supposed to control your own behavior. Here are a few rules:

Follow the rules! When you're in public places and see a sign that says "Turn off cell phones", don't use your phone. If you are allowed, speak softly for a short time and try to keep away from other people.

Phone off! Never make calls in a theater, when you are watching a movie or enjoying a concert.

Pay attention! Talking on a cell phone while driving is dangerous. And watch where you're going when you're walking down the streets and talking on the phone.

As more people use cell phones, things are going to get worse. So, the next time you're getting ready to make a call, stop and consider the people around you.

Most musicians agree that the best violins were first made in Cremona, Italy, about 200 years ago. These violins sound better than any others. They even sound better than violins made today. Violin makers and scientists try to make instruments like the Italian violins. But many aren't the same. Musicians still prefer the old ones.

Some people think it is the age of the violins. But not all old violins sound wonderful. Only the old violins from Cremona are special. So age cannot be the answer.

Other people think the secret to those is the wood. The wood must be from certain kinds of trees. But the kind of wood may not be so important. It may be more important to cut the wood in a special way. Wood for a violin must be cut very carefully. It has to be the right size and shape. The smallest difference will change the sound of the violin. Musicians sometimes think that this was the secret of the Italians. Maybe they understand more than we do about how to cut the wood.

Size and shape may not be the answer either. Scientists can make new ones that are exactly the same size and shape. But the new violins still do not sound as good as the old ones. Some scientists think the secret may be the varnish (清漆). Varnish is what covers the wood of the violin. It makes the wood look shiny(光亮的). It also helps the sound of the instrument. No one knows what the Italian violin makers used in their varnish.

    1. (1) The passage is about ______.
      A . the old Italian violins B . musical instruments C . scientific ideas D . making violins
    2. (2) Violins made today ________.
A . have the same size and shape as the old ones B . are better than the old ones C . sound the same as the old ones D . have the same varnish as the old ones
    3. (3) Some scientists believe that the secret of the old violin was_________.
      A . their color B . their sound C . their varnish D . the music
    4. (4) Why was the violin painted with the varnish?_________
A . To make the sound nice. B . To make the appearance shiny. C . To value the violin. D . Both A and B
