When Andrea Peterson landed her first teaching job, she faced the difficult task of creating a music program with almost no money for equipment or materials in a climate where standards-based learning was the focus and music just provided a break for students and teachers.

For her drive and creativity in overcoming those challenges, she's been named national teacher of the year.

Principal Waynes Kettler said he's worked with many outstanding teachers in his 22 years as an educator, but Peterson is "just that one step above anybody I've ever worked with before. "

Kettler and others at Monte Cristo Elementary School talk about the ways she has introduced the learning from other classrooms into her music program and her creativity in working around things such as the lack of money for new music.

When students were reading S. E. Hinton's novel The Outsiders in their regular classroom, Peterson helped them write a 30-minute play with scenes from the book. Then they chose three Broadway tunes that focused on race, equality and social fairness, the themes of the book. Peterson created two other songs herself after classroom discussions about the play and the book.

The honor means a lot to people of Granite Foils. It's inspiring and exciting to know that people from small towns even win national honors.

As national teacher of the year, Peterson will spend the more year outside the classroom, as a national and international spokeswoman for education.

Not surprisingly she is a big believer in the value of acts education. She said it's necessary for schools to offer classes such as act or music and physical education because for some kids one of those subjects is the only thing that drives them to come back to school day after day.

    1. (1) What is the most important reason that Peterson won the award?

"Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all?" An old tale tells a seemingly unbelievable story of a magic mirror, but now the magic is no longer unachievable.

In August 2018, news went widely-spread that the police had caught criminal suspects (嫌疑人) who attended Chinese singer Jacky Cheung's concerts. How did the police pick out the suspects among thousands of screaming fans? The helping hand is AI facial recognition technology. The low-key (低调的) but powerful tool is no longer far-fetched, but entering the world of China's top investors and companies.

Facial recognition is a technology able to recognize a person from a digital image or a figure from a video source. Tang Wenbin, CTO of Face, an AI computer vision technology company in China, vividly explained the workflow (流程). According to him, facial recognition is the identification (身份证明)of our appearance, including knowing the sex, age and identity of a person. You may think it is like a brain or a neural network. You use data to train it, and then, it learns the pattern.

Facial recognition technology has been traditionally related to the security work but today it is widely used in other industries including mobile phones, marketing and finance. Chinese start-ups have seen the power of AI facial recognition for simplifying and speeding up tasks in many industries. And the market is now crowded and competitive.

China is starting the AI revolution and has made breakthrough in facial recognition. "If the use of AI in different industries is a marathon, the companies there probably have just got off the blocks, " said Tian Feng, director of Alibaba Cloud Research Center. "For you, a thousand times over. " The words echoed (回响) in my heart long after I had finished the heartbreaking story. Each word impressed me with the power of firmness, the power of determination, and the power of love, whether it is from Hassan or Amir.

It's hard to use a few words to describe what the story is about because too many things are clear, friendship, familial affection, love, inferiority (自卑), shyness, regret, etc. It's even harder to imagine how the writer managed to expose so many points of human nature in just one story, with the truth of cruelty. Unlike many other stories in which the main characters are always perfect men or heroes. Kite Runner shows us a real man who is thirsty for others' support, who may also become feared in the face of challenge, who will also make big mistakes, just like most of us. In the story, we see Amir's growth from an immature, unconfident boy to a brave man, willing to shoulder responsibilities. But he grows up with pain and regret, and almost at the cost of his life.

The story impresses me with the cruel reality that some mistakes take a lifetime to make up for. Some hurt which has already been caused can never be undone. Some people, once left, may never return. So always keep a sense of responsibilities for what you are doing, so that unnecessary hurt can be avoided. If mistakes are made, try to make up for it at once, for you may never have a second chance. Also, cherish people you love when they are still by your side, for they may be away for good.

At last, I believe that the person, who is ever promised by others with the word "For you, a thousand times over", is the luckiest guy in the world. I wish I could have this honor too.

      A . Sometimes B . Frequently C . never D . forever
    3. (3) According to the passage, which statement is correct?
A . Amir likes to challenge himself in growth. B . Amir grows up happily with love and friendship. C . Amir reflects many aspects of human nature. D . Amir is a brave hero who loses his life at last.
    4. (4) Which of the following will the author most agree with?
A . Wait for what you love though it's far away. B . Treasure what you have before it's gone. C . Chase what matters despite the difficulties. D . Avoid what hurts unless it counts.

One snowy day, the winds grew stronger and the snow turned into a blinding snowstorm. A farmer sat down to relax before the fire for the evening. Then he heard a loud knock, something hitting against the window. He looked outside but could not see anything. So he went outside for a better view. In the field near his house he saw, of all the strangest things, a group of swans.

They were apparently flying to look for a warmer area down south, but they had been caught in the snowstorm. The storm had become too blinding and violent for the swans to fly or see their way. They were trapped on his farm, with no food or shelter, unable to do more than wave their wings and fly in aimless circles. He had sympathy for them and wanted to help them.

He thought to himself, the barn (谷仓) would be a great place for them to stay. It was warm and safe; surely they could spend the night and wait out the storm. So he opened the barn doors for them. He waited, watching them, hoping they would notice the open barn and go inside.

However, they did not notice the barn or realize what it could mean for them. He moved closer toward them to get their attention, but they just moved away from him out of fear. He went into the house and came back with some bread, broke it up, and made a bread trail to the barn. They still did not catch on.

Starting to get frustrated, he went over and tried to drive them toward the barn. They panicked and scattered into every direction except toward the barn. Nothing he did could get them to go into the barn where there was warmth, safety, and shelter. Feeling totally puzzled, he exclaimed, "Why don't they follow me? Can't they see this is the only place where they can survive the storm? How can I possibly get them into the one place to save them?"
