The way of greeting someone comes in different forms. Kissing and hugging are normal in some European and Arab countries. Maoris in New Zealand greet each other by rubbing against their noses. However, the most common physical way of greeting people nowadays is handshake. It has become so ubiquitous that you may never have thought about its origins. It's like a part of human nature.

The modern handshake as a form of greeting is hard to trace. The Quakers are traditionally seen as originators. But as Dutch sociologist Herman Roodenburg——the chief authority for the history of handshaking一wrote in his publication A Cultural History of Gesture, "More than in any other field, the study of gesture is one in which the historian has to make the most of only a few clues. " Another well-known evidence of the early tradition of shaking hands took place in the early 17th century. A Scotsman living in England, named James Cleland, suggested that the practice of the u good old Scottish shaking of the two right hands" should be observed, instead of things like bowing down to everyone's shoes and kissing hands.

If you ask why shaking hands is the most preferred way of greeting over other gestures, the most well-known explanation is that handshaking prevents the right hand from holding a weapon. In the 19th century it was argued that shaking hands without removing gloves was quite rude and required an immediate apology.

Shaking hands seems like a gesture that has been around forever. However, in 1880's France, a society had been formed to abolish the handshake as a ''vulgar" English novelty. And now in the US that gesture may fall away in favor of the fist hump. While the fist bump is a cooler way to greet someone, the reason may have been more practical. According to survey participants, they did not want to shake hands because they were afraid of catching and spreading bacteria.

    1. (1) Which of the following can best explain "ubiquitous" underlined in paragraph 1?
      A . Curious. B . Obvious. C . Common. D . Shallow.
    2. (2) What does paragraph 2 mainly discuss about the modern handshake?
      A . The importance. B . The history. C . The feature. D . The classification.
    3. (3) Why did people shake hands using right hands according to the most famous explanation?
      A . For convenience. B . For politeness. C . For enjoyment. D . For safety.
    4. (4) What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A . Everyone doesn't fall in love with the handshake. B . The root of handshake is lost in the sands of time. C . It might seem like shaking hands is an ancient custom. D . A handshake is among the most common ways to greet others.

A new study published this week in the journal Nature Communications has concluded that a 100 percent change to organic food production in England and Wales would actually lead to a great increase in greenhouse gas emissions (排放). In turn, this would contribute to further climate change.

Although organic farming directly pours out fewer emissions than conventional farming—around 20 percent lower for crops and 4 percent for farm animals—it produces notably less food. As to this study's findings, total organic agriculture in England and Wales would produce 40 percent less food. With less food in the market, the countries would need to increase food imports, which would produce more global greenhouse gas emissions.

Organic farming also increases the amount of absorbing carbon, a process where carbon dioxide (CO2) is "absorbed" out of the atmosphere and captured by plants and stored in the soil. However, even a total change to organic farming would only be equal to a tiny part of the higher emissions from overseas land use.

"We predict a drop in total food production of 40 percent under a fully organic farming process, compared to conventional farming, if we keep to the same national diet," Dr Adrian Williams, lead author and reader in Agri-Environmental Systems at Cranfield University, said in a statement. "This results from lower crop quantity, because output is limited by a lower supply of nitrogen, which is mainly from other crops or solid waste from cattle on the grassland."

Nevertheless, it is important to note that organic farming still holds some useful benefits for the environment, such as reducing exposure to chemicals and improving the varieties of creatures. In conclusion, the study suggests that organic farming will continue to play a key role in resolving the world's environmental problems. However, it's just one part of a much wider solution.

    1. (1) What will total organic agriculture bring to England?
A . More main food. B . More species crop. C . More food imports. D . More fresh oxygen.
    2. (2) How does organic farming increase the amount of absorbing carbon?
      A . By taking in CO2 B . By changing CO2 C . By giving off CO2 D . By producing CO2
    3. (3) What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A . The ways to reduce organic farming. B . The results caused by organic farming. C . The solution to the environment problems. D . The advantages of organic farming.
    4. (4) Which of the following is the best title of the text?
A . Organic farming, green food B . Organic farming, our hope in future C . Organic farming, a mistake we made D . Organic farming, a double-edged sword

Like many couples, Sheila and David Hoffman enjoy travelling. Since 2000, they've often visited relatives in Australia and enjoyed holidays in many European countries including France, Germany, Italy, and Greece. And they've toured around America, but they haven't once stayed in a hotel. The Hoffmans are part of a growing number of people who use their home as a way to have inexpensive holidays. So far, they've swapped their three-bedroom London home with people who want to stay there for anything from a week to two months.

In a home swap, you offer your house as a place to stay and anyone who's interested gets in touch. If your dates and requirements fit, then you make a deal to exchange houses for an agreed time. The exchange can involve more than just a place to stay — some homeowners also exchange cars and others will arrange for a friend or neighbour to be on call in case of emergencies. Some exchangers will even organise restaurant bookings and trips.

Home swaps have existed in Britain on an organised basis for decades but they really took off with the arrival of the Internet. Previously, the process was long and drawn-out, involving letter exchange and expensive international calls to complete arrangements. Now, it can all be done with a few clicks. Most home-exchangers register with a specialist home-exchange company that deals with the organisation.

More people are using their homes as a way to enjoy holidays at home as well as abroad. Most of them choose to follow the trend because they are interested in how natives lead their lives. When you live in a typical home rather than a hotel, it's almost like an exchange of lifestyles. It's also a cheap way to travel making sure you won't run short of money on your journey.

    1. (1) Where do Sheila and David Hoffman live?
      A . In Australia. B . In the US. C . In the UK. D . In France.
    2. (2) Which word can be used to describe some homeowners mentioned in Paragraph 2?
      A . Smart. B . Strict. C . Humorous. D . Thoughtful.
    3. (3) What can we know about the home-exchange process in the past?
      A . It caused many problems. B . It saved a lot of time. C . It was well-organised. D . It was complicated.
    4. (4) What is the main reason for more people swapping their homes?
A . They hope to experience life as the locals. B . They are not used to staying in hotels. C . They do not want to leave their houses unused. D . They need to earn money from exchanging their homes.
二、任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
  • 5. (2021高二上·长白月考) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

The Types to Live Below Your Full Potential

Human potential is unlimited, but unfortunately, many do not use their true potential. Here are some types to live below your true potential.

Let yourself be affected by minor issues

Sometimes we may be affected by small issues. One way to check if something is worth thinking over is to ask yourself this question: "Will this matter in one year's time?" If not, then it's probably not worth your energy to think about these things, Focus on things that do matter in the long run instead.

    Blame others for your difficulty.

Is there anything you're blaming others for in your life? For example, if you blame your parents for your obesity, you'll continue to remain obese because in your mind they are the reason why you're obese. You'll never have the power to change the situation until you take responsibility for it.

Try to do everything by yourself.

Are you someone who likes to do everything yourself? So do I, but over the years I've realized that this prevents me from achieving more. Start by removing the less important tasks and doing the more important ones, and you'll notice a big difference.

Many people set small goals because they're afraid to fail. Actually what they're really afraid of is to realize what they've always had the power to achieve. So set your highest goals today. You should try to achieve them because they are what you deserve.

    A. Set small goals.

    B. Believe that you can make it.

    C. You give others power over that part of your life.

    D. While these emotions are normal, often these issues aren't important in the long run.

    E. Trying to do everything means you're not able to do the higher level, important things.

    F. Still worse, they waste it by carrying out tasks that are a poor use of their time and energy.

    G. In fact, when you blame someone for what you're going through, you refuse responsibility.
