As we know, there are differences between Western culture and Chinese culture. We can see differences when we pay attention to the way words are used. Let's look at the words about animals and plants. Most expressions in Chinese are about the dog, for example, "a homeless dog" "a mad dog" "a running dog" and "a dog catching a mouse", having negative meanings. But in Western countries, dogs are thought to be honest and good friends of humans. In English, people use the dog to describe positive things. For example, "you are a lucky dog" means "you are a lucky person". And "every dog has its day" means "each person has good luck some time". To describe a person's serious illness, they say "sick as a dog". The word "dog-tired" means very tired. However, Chinese love cats very much. But in Western culture, "cat" is often used to describe a woman who is cruel(残忍的).

The rose is a symbol of love in both China and some Western countries. People think the rose means love, peace, courage and friendship. And the rose is a kind of important flowers in England, America and many other countries.

The words about plants and animals are used in positive or negative ways in different cultures. We can learn about many differences in culture by comparing how some words are used.

    1. (1) Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A . Chinese people prefer dogs to cats. B . Western people think of cats as good friends. C . Roses are the national flower of all Western countries. D . Words show differences in culture.
    2. (2) The underlined word "negative" means"          "in Chinese.
      A . 正面的 B . 中性的 C . 负面的 D . 有趣的
    3. (3) From the passage, we can infer that the word "copycat" is most possibly to describe a person who          in Western countries.
A . loves drawing cats B . enjoys writing books C . likes following others D . is good at copying notes
    4. (4) What's the best title for the passage?
A . Negative or positive B . Different countries have different cultures C . "Roses" means the same in Chinese and English D . What dog and "cat" mean in English and Chinese

If you cannot live without your car, Zurich might be the last city you would like to visit. In Zurich, people are welcome, but cars are not! Over the past 20 years, this city has used smart ways to make traffic lighter.

One is to keep the same number of parking spaces. For example, if 50 new parking spaces are built in one part of the city, then 50 old spaces in other parts are taken away for other uses. So the total number does not change. Some are unhappy that there are never enough parking spaces. That is just what the city has in mind: If people find parking more difficult, they will drive less.

Also, the number of cars in the city is counted. Over 3,500 little computers are put under Zurich roads to check the number of cars that come into the city. If the number is higher than the city can deal with, the traffic lights on the roads that enter the city will be kept red. So drivers who are traveling into Zurich have to stop and wait until there are fewer cars in the city.

Now, you may ask why Zurich is doing this. This is simply because the city wants to make more space for its people.

    1. (1) The writer tells us how to keep the same number of parking spaces by_________.
      A . giving a reason B . giving an example C . sharing a story D . drawing a picture
    2. (2) The writer says "Zurich might be the last city you'd like to visit because_________.

①Zurich only welcomes people with mini cars

②Zurich is a small city with a long history

③it's difficult to find a parking space in Zurich

④you can't drive into Zurich at any time you want

      A . ① ③ B . ③ ④ C . ② ③ D . ① ④
    3. (3) What will happen if the cars in Zurich are more than the city can deal with?
A . People will build more parking spaces under Zurich roads. B . All the computers under Zurich roads will stop working C . Drivers will stop and wait before traveling into Zurich. D . All the lights on the roads in Zurich will be always kept red.
    4. (4) Which of the following shows the structure(结构)of the passage?(P-Paragraph)?
      A . B . C . D .
四、任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,共计10分)
  • 13. (2020八上·萧山竞赛) 下面文章中有五处需要添加小标题,请从以下选项中选出符合各段意思的小标题。选项中有一项是多余选项。

    A. If you drink water when you exercise, you'll get headaches and feel tired.

    B. Evening is the best time to exercise as it's always cool.

    C. Exercising the same body part every day is the fastest way to improve strength.

    D. A plate of chicken is a good meal before games because it has much energy.

E Girls who do strength training will make their muscles big.

    F. The best time to exercise is early in the morning.

Today, people are paying more and more attention to improving their health through sports and exercise. But some of them have some wrong ideas about it.

In fact, the best meal before games should have carbohydrates(碳水化合物). Foods like potatoes, bread, bananas are rich in it, but chicken and meat are not. Carbohydrates are the best and most easily used form of energy. The energy that you get for today's game is from what you ate yesterday!

No. Morning is a good time to exercise, but it may not be suitable for you. If an afternoon or evening period suits you, and you enjoy the feeling of getting healthier, you can choose any time to exercise. There is no fixed time for you to exercise.

The fact is that you must have some water during breaks when you exercise. And after exercising, you must have enough water. If you don't drink enough water, then you'll probably get headaches and feel tired.

Not right. Exercising the same body part every day is the fastest way to cause problems. To improve strength, you want to work your muscles(肌肉) hard, but then you need to give those muscles a day of rest. Too much exercise can cause serious problems to muscles.

Wrong. We usually connect those big muscles with bodybuilders(健美运动员), but girls don't have enough male hormone(雄性激素) to make their muscles big like men. Strength training is a good way to make their muscles strong for girls.
