Taking good notes can help you do well in all your schoolwork. But unluckily, most schools don't teach you how to take notes. So here is some advice
Write down key facts. If your teacher writes notes on the board, you can copy them down. If not write down the most important points. Different teachers do things differently. For example, some teachers may say lots of dates and facts in class. but only write the key ones on the board. Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may say a certain date or a piece of information several times.
Don't overdo(做……过度)it. You'll go crazy if you try to write down every word in class. And if you focus too much on getting your notes right, you may miss important points. Some students lean better by listening, writing, down some key points, and then going over the notes after class.
Ask. Don't be afraid to ask the teacher to say something again. If the teacher is going too fast, your classmates will also be willing to hear the information again. If you feel shy about asking in class, see your teacher after class.
Note-taking gives your mind a chance to absorb(吸收)what you need to learn. It can not only help you do better in a test, but also help you form good study habits.

Dragon Head Raising Day: time for a haircut
China is a country with many colorful days and festivals. The Dragon Head Raising Day(Longtaitou)is one of them.
This special day is on the second day of the second month in the Chinese lunar calendar(阴历). It stands for the start of spring and farming.
The dragon is important in Chinese culture. We Chinese people call ourselves the"descendants(后代)of the dragon". Therefore, people celebrate the Dragon Head Raising Day with many customs about dragons.
On the day in ancient times, people put ashes(灰)in the kitchen. This was to"lead the dragon into the house". People believed that with the help of the dragon, they could have a good harvest(收成)in autumn.
Also, people eat special foods on that day. The foods are usually named after dragons. For example, people eat"dragon whisker(细须)"noodles and dumplings called"dragon teeth".
Today, many customs have faded away(消退). But one that has remained is the cutting of hair. It was said that a haircut during the first lunar month may bring bad luck to the mother's brothers. So many people have their hair cut on the Dragon Head Raising Day.
No matter how carefully we check a composition(作文), it seems there's always one more little mistake waiting to be discovered. The following tips may help you find your mistakes before anybody else does.
First of all, give it a rest. If time permits(允许), set your composition aside for a few hours after you've finished it, and then read it carefully to correct mistakes with fresh eyes.
Secondly, look for one type of problem at a time. Read through your composition several times, concentrating first on sentence structures, then word choice, then spelling, and finally punctuation(标点). As the saying goes, if you look for trouble, you're likely to find it.
If you don't believe in yourself, you can ask a friend for help. Read your composition to him aloud. You can also ask him to read it aloud. You may hear a problem that you haven't been able to see. Your friend can also help you find some mistakes.
Then, try to read your composition backward(倒着)Another way to catch spelling mistakes is to read backward, from right to left, starting with the last word in your composition.
Another method some writers usually use is to keep a list of the types of mistakes they commonly make, and then use the list each time they correct their works.

Buy Nothing Day
For many people, the last weekend of November kicks off the holiday shopping season. But a growing number of people are celebrating a different kind of holiday. It's called Buy Nothing Day. On this day, people are encouraged not to spend any money at all. The movement was started in 1995 by a group who cared about the environmental effects of shopping. "if we buy something, we think we are helping the economy. But we' re killing the planet, and wasting our resources, "said one organizer. "For one thing, just think about all the paper and plastic we're wasting on shopping bags. "
There are Buy Nothing Festivals in most major cities. Participants go to big shopping centers and malls and hand out leaflets about the bad effects of shopping. Other participants cut up their credit cards in public.
Some organizers are unhappy this year because major TV networks will not give them air time to advertise Buy Nothing Day. Although it's hard to advertise this event, over one million people in at least 65 countries are expected to take part in the next Buy Nothing Day.
