For me, it's the moment I know that Christmas has truly begun. It's already dark. I get a glass of milk and sit down to write down my wishes on 1.
Although I hardly see my family and friends, I 2 sending cards to them. I enjoy pushing lots of envelopes(信封) into the postbox and 3 them.
Most people like a paper card better than an e-card. 4, the number of the cards I get is becoming smaller and smaller each year. If I am lucky, I might get lots of group texts(短信). I still send cards to those people, but 5 getting cards back, I won't send them Christmas cards next year.
People now send much 6 cards every year than before, because of high postage(邮资) and the Internet. What makes me 7 is that although a lot of people enjoy social(社会的)lives, many old people are not good at using the Internet. For them, a card means a lot.
One of my friends moved to a(n) 8 city. He knew no one there, and ended up decorating (装饰) his house with the cards he got before, just to make 9 feel less lonely.
So this Christmas, let's put down our 10, take out those old address books and send cards to our families, friends and neighbors.
What do you know about national parks? Are they the same as the common ones?
National parks are much bigger and they give a safe home to plants and animals. They help keep the environment clean. They are also great places to travel to. You can see colorful plants and wild (野生的) animals there.
China now has five national parks. They keep nearly 30 percent of the important wildlife species (物种) safe in China. Let's take a look at three of them.
Park I | It is the largest national park in China. It is much bigger than Yellowstone National Park in the United States. It is home to the sources(发源地)of the Yangtze, Yellow and Lancang rivers. It's also home to hundreds of animal species. |
Park II | More than 70 percent of China's pandas live there. There are more than 1,600 wild pandas in China. The park joins 82 small panda homes in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu together. Pandas and some other wild animals can live and play together in the park. |
Park III | It has the largest tropical forest in China. The forest covers nearly 74 percent of the park. More than 400 kinds of plants grow only in Hainan. There are 35 Hainan gibbons(长臂猿). They are the only members of the species in the world. And Hainan's three highest mountains are also in the park. |

Many people say volleyball is easy. "As long as you can hit it in the air, you can play volleyball." I agreed with those people in the past. But now I find it is not really so.
I wasn't good at volleyball at first. But after practicing hard with my mother, I was sure that I could join my school team and surprise everyone. I wanted to show that I could do well in volleyball, too.
My dream didn't come true the next day. When I played with the team, I was unable to work with other players successfully. I also couldn't handle(处理)balls well. I was upset. Isn't volleyball just about hitting the ball?
I began a few weeks of training with the team. Then, we had our first game against Park School. The Park School players were full of experience. However, most of my teammates were not. I could hardly expect to win.
The ball went up. One "thump", a second "thump" and I leapt up and hit the ball. It flew over the net (网). I enjoyed the game and felt wonderful working together with my teammates. The sounds of running feet, loud shouts and cheers (欢呼) filled us with warmth. After the game, everyone was excited, talking about our teamwork.
That's when I started to know that being on the school team meant working together with others. I understood how cooperation (合作) is a kind of beauty in itself. Volleyball helped me make friends, learn new things, and find my true self within a group.
It is often said that the best way to solve a hard problem is to sleep on it. Is it true? A new study shows that it is.
A team of scientists in the US found that sleeping is useful to help you solve problems. They did an experiment on 57 university students. They asked students to solve 42 difficult problems on the first day. Students worked on each problem when listening to different music. Students could try to remember the music they heard when solving the problems. By the end, there were still six problems left.
The students then went back home to sleep with special music players. They played music linked (联系) with the unsolved problems when the students were in the slow-wave sleep stage (时期) . This stage is when people are likely to dream and reorganize memories (重组记忆).
The next morning, the students tried the unsolved problems again. Scientists found they were 55 percent more likely to solve them. The music activated (激活) the memories they had of the problems when they were sleeping. With its help, they were able to "work" on the problems in their sleep.
Scientists have found that sleep can not only strengthen (强化) memory, but also help us organize and send information. This study is more evidence (证据) of these findings. So the next time you face a difficult problem, sleep on it. Play some music to help yourself think of the problem.
①Students listened to music when they slept.
②Students were asked to solve problems when listening to music.
③Students tried the unsolved problems again.
④Students left six problems unsolved.

Monday, July 15th I asked Mom to let me cook dinner for the family last night. I told her I'd cook something easy so she agreed. We usually eat Asian food like Chinese, Korean, or Japanese, but I decided to make something different. I chose an Italian food-spaghetti (意大利面) with meat sauce (酱) . Spaghetti is easy to cook. I put enough spaghetti for everyone in my family into a big pot. I cook it for about ten minutes. But before this I made the meat sauce. I wanted the meat sauce to be really delicious. I cut an onion into small pieces. I put a little oil into a pot and added the onion pieces. I fried (油炒) the onion in the oil for a few minutes. When the onion was soft, I put some beef into the pot with the onions, and fried them together for a few minutes. Then I added a can of tomatoes and some mixed herbs. Finally, I added some tomato juice and cook it on a low heat for about an hour. When the spaghetti was ready, I put it into a large bowl. Then I poured the meat sauce over it. There was enough for everyone and we all put some cheese on top of it. Everyone enjoyed it and Mom said she would let me cook something else another day. I'm going to read a cook book and find something really interesting to cook. |

When I first saw the dog Lucy, she was about the size of a little dog. I thought she was(small) dog in the world. She was so cute.
However, she was very naughty(淘气的) dog. One night, she ate our socks and (break) our shoes. My mom did read some books about dogs, but we were not prepared for the naughty dog. We were very angry and we shouted to her (loud), but it didn't work.
So we decided (take) her to the dog school. We believed that she could learn how to be a man's best friend there. After a few (month), we were surprised that Lucy could even help us do some small things.
Now, Lucy is already 10 years old. Though she is a little old, she can still help us a lot. For example, I say "socks", she will run quickly to get my socks. Thanks to the dog school, it has made a big (different) to Lily.
