Last week our teacher announced that a Chinese Character Dictation Competition will be held in the auditorium on July 3. Many of us were interested and hoped to join in it, and only one competitor was allowed for each class. Luckily, I got chance.
In the following days, I busied me preparing for the competition. My classmates gave me a lot of good advices. As the competition was approaching, I felt more and more confident. The day finally came. Some characters were very challenging that many of the competitors got stuck while I succeeded on writing down most of them and won first prize. When I was standing excited on the stage, pictures of my classmates helps me flashed into my mind. The victory and honor were belonged to all of us.
After 20 years of living and reading together, we have gathered what some might call a large library. One problem: We don't1have a library to put the books in. It was time to take 2.
I started in the office, where the literary remains of five university degrees3dust. Why did we4have textbooks from 25 years ago? I worked my way through the shelves 5and slipped them into the donation box. Next came Second- Hand Dog, 6when we adopted our first shelter clog nineteen years ago. I couldn't 7flipping (快速翻动) through the pages, remembering the 8learned and later 9 to all the dogs followed.
And so it went on and on. Trying to choose what I could stand to10with, I realized the full shelves held much 11 a collection of books. They told a story, our story. Flipping through these 12 pages, a historian could conclude a pretty accurate 13of our life over the past twenty years. The stained pages of our recipe books14 our favourite meals. That guide to childhood illnesses got us across many sleepless nights. How could I give them away?
At the end of the day, I drove to the 15center with just a few boxes. Our16are still fully filled.
They're not growing as quickly as they used to, since we're joined the17crowd. I imagine how easy it will be to18the electronic bookshelves of the future. Scan through19of text. Delete, delete, in the blink(眨眼)of an eye.
This might sound efficient(有效的)to some, but it makes me feel20 .
Where do hurricane names come from? Why do we give human names to violent, mindless masses of water and wind? And how do we all agree which name to use?
Before the 1940s, only the worst storms were given names. There was the Sea Islands Hurricane of 1893, the Great Galveston Hurricane of 1900 and the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 to name a few.
The practice of using more memorable names didn't begin until 1950. It was when Atlantic tropical hurricanes received official names, although they still weren't human ones. So the 1950 season featured such strangely named storms as
Hurricane Dog, Hurricane Easy and Hurricane Love.
The same list of names was recycled every year, so the 1950-1952 seasons each featured a Hurricane Able through at least Hurricane Fox. That became confusing, so in 1953 the U. S. National Hurricane Center began using female human names, which proved far more successful. Not only did it make storm identification easier, but it helped authorities and news outlets spread warnings.
The first hurricane names were often inspired by forecasters' wives, but in 1979men's names were added to the mix The World Meteorological Organization now monitors the master list of names, which alternates between male and females six lists are rotated annually in the Atlantic. So the 2015names will be used again in 2021. Seventy-eight Atlantic hurricane names have been retired since 1954, including 29 since 2000.
A. Besides, it helped the public pay attention to them.
B. These names were chosen from some familiar words.
C. This naming rule, however, had an obvious weakness.
D. These names of retired hurricanes are silly or unreasonable.
E. But when a hurricane is bad enough, its name can be retired.
F. They were usually based on the place or time of year they made landfall.
G. It is also easier to use names when we have more than one storm to track.
