    After nearly half a mouth, the Christmas letter finally was here in my hand. Yes, writing letters is how my friend in the US and I exchange our greeting every Christmas. People ask why not send our greetings on Facebook, or on Wechat1, and by the way, it'll save money. For me, writing letters is more of a2habit than a quirk (怪癖) in modem times.     Modem inventions make our life easier and more interesting than before. Let's take a look at some inventions.

    The next time you look up at the sky and see a cloud that looks like Mickey Mouse or your favorite fruit, look again. It may not be a cloud, but a Flogo - a 1ogo (标语) that flies. It's a new form of advertising (广告) in the sky that's never been used before. It's a different way to market your products, logos, and events.

    These funny logos are made with soap bubbles (肥皂泡) mixed with a little helium gas (氦气) , which makes them lighter than air and float in the sky. Special machines are used to make these new finny Flogos. The machine, which can be rented for $ 2,500 a day, can make a Flogo every 15—25 seconds.

    Flogos can fly much higher or lower if needed. They can last from a few minutes to an hour anywhere in the sky, depending on the weather conditions. Though they can fly to 20,000 feet they usually float around at 300—500 feet. Flogos are only white now, but people hope to have more colorful Flogos in the near future.

    Flogos are Green, 100% environmentally safe, because the soap used to make the Flogo comes from plants and leaves. So this fun way of advertising is healthy and good for the environment.

    When Isaac Theil let a sleepy stranger take a little catnap (打盹) on his shoulder, it was because "I simply remembered the times my own head would bop on someone's shoulder because I was so tired after a long day," he said to Tova Ross of Tablet Magazine.

    Another subway rider was so moved by Theil's kindness that he took a picture and put it on Reddit, from which it was then posted to Facebook. One wrote "Heading home on the Q train yesterday when this young black guy nodded off on the shoulder of a stranger. The man didn't move a bit and just let him stay there. After a minute, I asked the man if he wanted me to wake the young man up, but he shook his head and replied, 'He must have had a long day, let him sleep. We've all been there, right?'."

    Theil himself has been completely surprised at the attention he's received for his small act of kindness, as the photo has been shared over 20, 000 times on Facebook.

    "There is only one reason that I didn't move, and let him continue sleeping, that he was simply

a man being who was exhausted, and I knew it and happened to be there and have a big shoulder to offer him."

    "It's an honor that people use this as a lesson to just be good to each other," Theil said to Tablet.

    One cool April 22 morning, people started the day as usual. Yet it was not a normal day. What's so special about April 22? The answer is because it is Earth Day. People all over the world celebrate this important day. The idea of having a special day to celebrate Earth began in the 1960s. Life was very different then. Most people. had no idea how dirty our air and water were.

    On April 22, 1970, twenty million Americans joined the first Earth Day activities. This showed that people really want to do something for the environment. Since then laws have been passed to protect the air, water, land, and animals. The vehicles (汽车) such as cars and buses you ride in must pass tests to make sure they don't cause too much pollution. Thanks to it, cars today give out about half as many bad chemicals as they did in the past.

    It's a good thing because they have got a lot of help. The Cuyahoga River in Ohio was so polluted that rubbish and oil on the river even caught fire! Today, the river is cleaner. It no longer burns.

    Now the celebration has spread to other countries. More than 175 countries take part each year. Every April 22, millions of people get together to clean and protect the Earth. Our job is to put this knowledge to work. You can help keep our planet healthy, too!

    On Jan 26, people around the world were surprised to hear of the sudden passing of Kobe Bryant, one of the NBA's most legendary (传奇的) . The 41-year-old, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna Bryant and seven others died when their helicopter crashed (直升机坠毁) in California, US.

    So far, people from all walks of life deep sorrow as well as respect for the late basketball superstar—not just for his achievements on the court, but for his genuine (真 诚 的) personality and the encouragement he to so many people.

In the basketball world, Bryant is among the top players of all time. Fans remember him as the player who the Los Angeles Lakers win five NBA championships during his 20-year-long career. He entered the NBA from high school as a born basketball player. His deadly agility and aggressive tactics (敏捷进攻性的策略) earned him the nickname Black Mamba (非洲毒蛇). That's why his competitive theory is know as the "Mamba Mentality".

    "Mamba Mentality is you're going, you're competing, you are not  the end result," Bryant said. "It's all about how it is going and trusting in the hard works, so others  much."

    Off the court, he was known as a successful businessman, and he also left footprints in the movie industry, an Oscar in 2018 with his short film Dear Basketball.

    He was also known as a proud family man. His friend, baseball star Derek Jeter, remembered him as such in an interview: "Throughout our friendship, conversations we had— they were always about ."

    As the Los Angeles Times noted, Bryant's greatness was deeply felt by his skill, hard work and tireless efforts for his dream. Luckily, all these will live on long after his death.

    Though times have changed, falling asleep in class is still quite common among teenagers.

    Why do students sometimes fall asleep in class? An obvious (显而易见的) reason is lack (缺少) of sleep. However, there are also causes for getting too little sleep.

    Homework is a daily meal for most students, one that can take three to four hours per night. A teenager who wants to be able to take part in any activity besides homework must stay up late to fit everything in. Club activities, sports, computer — game playing, and TV viewing, for example, all lead to teens having less time for both homework and sleep. Sometimes teens lack sleep because of after—school jobs that are taken on to earn extra money for college, family cost, or simply for clothes.

    Physical problems are another reason that can cause students to fall asleep in class. For example, insomnia (失眠), which may keep a student up at night, causing exhaustion (疲惫不堪) during class hours, is a serious problem that may require medical attention. Medical research also supports the idea that each person has a body clock that helps to decide his or her sleep pattern. Unluckily, these body clocks do not always work according to school timetables.

    The effects of falling asleep in class can be quite serious. First of all, sleeping in class is not a good way to show your respect to teachers. In addition, it is highly possible that other students may make jokes about those who sleep in class. However, the most harmful effect of sleeping in class is missing important points. In the long run, sleepers may end up with failing classes.

    Since teens are probably not going to deal with the problem, falling asleep in class will probably remain an all—too—common situation. It will continue until more teens find a way to balance their personal and social lives with school and work, while still finding enough time to sleep.
