One day, there was a youngman traveling on a bus. He felt thirsty and got off at a station in search of water. However, before he got back to the bus, it had left. The man decided to find a place for a day's stay. He went to the nearby hotels to ask for a room but found none.
At last he reached a small house. He asked the owner of the house whether he could stay in her house for a day. The owner agreed. On that day the owner served him food and gave him a room to stay in, but did not ask for or expect anything in return.
At night when it was about eight o'clock, the gentleman heard a knock at the door. The owner opened the door. A well-dressed man entered and asked the owner to pay.
The gentleman came to know that the owner was in need of money. The next morning he left some money and a note on the table in the room and left.
Soon the owner saw the money. Beside the money, there was a note. It said, "You helped me but did not expect anything from me. Yesterday I heard the conversation between you and the stranger and come to know that you were in need of money. This is what you need."
Having donated a big part of his wealth to charity ,Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft and one of the richest people in the world, is now making efforts to reinvent (改造)the toilet. Now his charitable organization, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is looking for future toilets that can improve the living conditions of millions of people.
The flush toilet we use today was invented in 1775. While it works well in getting rid of our waste, it also uses a lot of water and needs a costly sewage system(下水道排污系统). Besides, it's not necessarily practical for the developing world. In some developing countries, lack of toilets leads to poor hygiene(卫生),and that could kill people. According to the World Health Organization, 1.5 million children under the age of five die each year because of hygiene problems.
Last year, the Gates Foundation gave money to eight universities around the world and asked them to start inventing the toilet of tomorrow: a toilet that uses little or no water is cheap and easy to fix, and is safe and hygienic.
At the " Reinvent the Toilet Fair(展销会)" competition recently held in Seattle, twenty-eight designs were displayed. The winners, from the California Institute of Technology, were awarded a $ 100,000 prize by the Gates Foundation.
"We couldn't be happier with the response that we've gotten," Bill Gates said at the event. Many of the new designs would not only greatly improve hygiene in the developing world, but also help change the dependence on traditional flush toilets in developed nations, he said.
In a big amusement park, there was a group of students sitting on the ground.
They were listening to a speech after spending a happy morning there. At the beginning of the speech, the speaker told them a story about himself. "When I was in middle school, our class was once asked to write about our dreams. That night I wrote down my dream of opening up an amusement park. However, my teacher gave me an F and told me to write it again," the speaker said. "Her reason was just that it was impossible for a poor boy to make such a dream come true. I went back home and asked my father what I should do. He told me to make the decision by myself. So I decided to make no changes.‘You can keep the F and I'll keep my dream,'I said to my teacher."
"And what happened?" the students asked. All of them were anxious to know more about the story.
"This is what is happening now. You are listening to my speech in my dream park," said the speaker. "I told you the story in order to make you know one thing: follow your hearts, keep your dreams and never let others destroy(破坏) your dreams."
When the students were leaving the park, their teacher went over to the speaker. "Thank you, Mr. Black. I think my students have learned a lot from your speech. Here I have to say sorry to you. Some years ago. I was once a dream stealer and stole a lot of students' dreams, including yours. Luckily you had enough gumption and didn't give up your dream because of me," she said and then left.
