I'm Reed, 26 years old and from New York City, but I moved to Florida several months ago. I found out on the website that there was a huge rescue effort still going on down here and that volunteers were desperately needed. I was able to get a good friend to sponsor my trip here and had the opportunity to come up for a couple of weeks through the Christmas season,

When I first got here we were just moving into the new building. The first half of my stay I was mainly helping to set this place up help build a lot of the dug runs and just help out with whatever else was needed. The second week I started to be able to get out more and started filling up feeding stations in St. Bernard Parish.

One day we were out trying to check out an extremely pregnant dog that was reported to be out in St. Bernard Parish, which would soon have parts of it destroyed so getting as many animals out of there as possible was definitely a priority (最重要的事). When we arrived at the location we did see a female dog that clearly had already given birth to her puppies. I tied to befriend her as much as possible, giving her treats and slowly trying to build her trust. She wasn't going far, so that indicated her puppies were nearby.

Once we built somewhat of a rapport with her, we started to search for the puppies. Almost giving up, we arrived at a house that seemed like it could be a possibility. I got on my hands and knees trying to make out what was going on under the house, staying as quiet as possible. All of a sudden, I heard the weakest sound of a puppy's crying. After homing in on it a little bit more, there was clearly a trash under the house. After getting a little more help, we were able to get the puppies from under the house with success and we found out they weren't even a week old.

This experience was so unbelievable, one I know I'll never forget.

    1. (1) What did Reed do in the first week in Florida?
A . Feeding dogs in the streets. B . Searching for sponsorship to travel. C . Helping with some construction work. D . Assisting in tearing down an old building.
    2. (2) Which of the following can best describe Reed?
      A . Warm-hearted and promising. B . Enthusiastic and caring. C . Considerate and generous. D . Kind and humorous.
    3. (3) What does the underlined word "rapport" in paragraph 4 mean?
      A . Extreme hatred. B . Everlasting friendship. C . Harmonious relationship. D . Psychological defense.
    4. (4) What can we infer from the passage?
A . The puppies were strong and lively. B . Reed made efforts to save the puppies. C . St. Bernard Parish was being destroyed. D . The female dog would give birth to puppies.

An inspiration for poets and authors, explorers and adventurers, the vast Arabian Desert is one of the most beautiful landscapes on the planet. It is hard not to be moved by its dramatic land or its seemingly endless sea of sand dunes (沙丘). However, limiting the physical movement of these natural desert wonders themselves is an almost impossible task.

Strong winds that blow up through these wide-open spaces sweep the surface, reshaping large sand dunes at will. In addition, running water from winter rains carves fresh patterns into the desert floor. The unique geography and constant flow of sand presents a set of challenges to the early settlements, particularly since many of them are situated in remote desert locations.

Fortunately, a discipline exists that traces its roots back to some of the earliest known civilizations, and which has also helped settlers there build safe, stable structures. Known as geotechnical engineering, it involves using geological knowledge to solve engineering problems and it is helping preserve desert operations through breakthroughs in sand and soil stabilization, without harming the natural environment.

Experts have piloted a new method of sand control that involves spraying chemicals onto sand around facilities where there is an absence of vegetation or biodiversity. Thus, a hard coat is created that prevents the sand from moving. This has proven so successful that it will cover a total of 700 square kilometers in the upcoming projects. The chemicals hold sand in place for between three to five years without influencing the environment, at which point another coat can be applied if required. We are now using predictive modeling and satellite imaging to determine the effectiveness of the approach, while trials have been scheduled to assess whether it can be applied to access roads und pipeline routes as well.

But as technology advances, so too must our approach to urban development. And as the science of materials progress, we can expect to see more examples of changing the way we connect with our surroundings.

    1. (1) What is the purpose of the first paragraph of the text?
A . To introduce the theme. B . To present the main idea. C . To show the beauty of desert. D . To emphasize an impossible task.
    2. (2) Which of the following makes it challenging to live in deserts?
A . Sand keeps flowing in a certain pattern. B . Deserts are remote and relatively uninhabited. C . Running water from winter rains is running out. D . Strong winds change the shape of sand dunes at will.
    3. (3) What do we know about the new method of sand control?
A . The chemicals con work for more than 5 years. B . Sand around the facilities is coated with vegetation C . A chemical coat is formed to stop the sand from flowing. D . The method has been applied to 700 square kilometers successfully.
    4. (4) What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A . Our way of life is changing faster than ever. B . Advances in materials are beyond our expectation. C . We are in the hope of setting examples of changing the world. D . The science of materials contributes to our relationship with nature.

Some people look forward to getting braces (牙箍) on their tooth, thinking they look cool. Other people avoid visiting the orthodontist (正齿医生) until resistance becomes in vain. But anyone who benefits from the orthodontist's trade today should be thankful for the progress this science has made over the centuries.

Remains of crooked (弯曲的) human teeth date back tens of thousands of years. Greek and Roman texts describing the treatment of irregular teeth by the application of pressure date buck as far as the fifth century B.C. Archaeological evidence indicates even earlier use of orthodontic appliances, including man-made objects found in considerable burial sites in ancient Italy. Another early attempt at braces may have been discovered on Egyptian mummies with recognizable metal bands around their teeth. Thus, from at least 1,000 BC, it was known that teeth move in response to pressure.

Techniques for correcting dental irregularities did not advance much until the eighteenth century. French dentists led the way to building orthodontic practice on scientific foundations. The greatest contribution came from Pierre Fauchard. In 1728, Fauchard published the first general study of dentistry. In it, he described the process of straightening. He made smooth a crooked tooth to create space around it. Then he repositioned the tooth using a tool called a "pelican". And he bound it to its neighbors and let it set. French and English dentists improved on Fauchard's work though the eighteenth century. Patients of Fauchard's treatment may have been grateful when the work was complete. While many of them faced the treatment with fear and cried during the procedures, there were many Frenchmen who flooded to Fauchard to improve their looks with dental work.

Pioneering European orthodontists introduced new techniques and instruments in the nineteenth century. By midcentury, American dentists began to take the lead in research and invention. Electricity revolutionized the operating room, and the proper medicine made surgery less painful. John Farrar developed guidelines for using tools to move teeth by applying force at regular intervals.

The twentieth century saw refinement in the materials and methods of orthodontics. But the fundamental principles of the science were developed during the days of Fauchard.

    1. (1) How many cases are mentioned about ancient treatment of irregular teeth?
      A . Two. B . Three. C . Four. D . Five.
    2. (2) What's the public's attitude toward Fauchard's treatment?
      A . Objective. B . Fearful. C . Conservative. D . Positive.
    3. (3) What was Americans' contribution to orthodontics?
A . Americans relieved the pain from the treatment. B . Americans repositioned the tooth using a "pelican". C . Americans introduced new techniques und instruments. D . Americans published the first general study of dentistry.
    4. (4) What can be the suitable title for the text?
A . Straight History of Orthodontics B . Advanced Techniques in Orthodontics C . Thanks for the Progress in Orthodontics D . Establishment of Professional Orthodontics
