Every Friday, I do volunteer work at an old people's home. It usually takes me several hours1joy to the old people there. One Friday, as I2to leave the house, the telephone rang. I picked it up, and found the call was from my husband. "Sorry, dear. But I've got too much work to do now. I'm afraid that you will.3pick up Taylor from school today. I4home as soon as I can." he said.
So, with the unexpected partner, my son Taylor, I went to5old people's home. That day, we were supposed to send flowers to each lady there. After we visited the third room, I noticed that my son would give the flowers to each lady and whisper(低语) something into the lady's ear. In return, I would always get a smile. I didn't ask him what6because I wanted to make sure that we had enough time7all the ladies.
After that evening, at dinner time, l8by my husband how my volunteer work worked out. "It was fun," I said." Whatever Taylor said to the ladies, it surely made them9." I stopped10at my son across the table. "What did you whisper back then?" l asked.
With a smile on his face, he answered, "All I said was 'l love you, Grandma. You look so beautiful today. 'I wanted to make them feel good."

China has changed a lot in these years since I first moved here. One main development has been using cashless payment(无现金支付), which has changed the way we live and shop. China is hardly the first country to have cashless payment. I used a debit card(借记卡)to pay for things without cash for years in the US. But now I can use my phone instead, it is quite easy and convenient.
One of the things l like most is that l can send and receive money directly among my friends. Cashless payment makes it so much easier to split the bill when we eat out together. People can send money to the person who has paid the bill on his or her phone. And it makes it simple to make donations(捐赠)as well. For example, l often donate to a pet receiving agency. Their official WeChat has a QR code(二维码) that I can scan to give them a donation.
But like all technology, cashless payment has some problems as well. What happens if your phone gets lost or stolen? There are also times when your phone's mobile Internet connection, or the shop's Internet connection, might not work. Not long ago, I went to a nearby convenience shop to buy some snacks. But when I got there, I found that the shop's cashless payment didn't work and they could only accept cash. l didn't have any cash with me, so l had to give up and leave without any snacks.
So even though cashless payment is convenient, you should always carry a bit of cash in order to avoid any possible inconvenience.
If you look at the top of your phone, you'll usually see a little symbol that says 3G or 4G. The "G" stands for the "generation" of your mobile network. But the symbols will become things of the past after 5G networks fully arrive.
Shanghai vice-mayor Wu Qing made the first 5G video call on a Huawei Mate X Smartphone. Shanghai has also become the first city in China to start testing 5C networks. About 100 times faster than 4G networks, 5G will let people download and upload data faster than ever before. But 5C won't just bring faster mobile Internet. People can use it for many other things as well.
For example, 5G will help to make self-driving cars safer. Today's self-driving test cars have one problem-when they found something in front, that is too late to stop at once. When the car "sees" something in front, it sends this information to a data center and receives instructions. However, it will be some time before it sends and receives this information. With this kind of lag (滞后) , the cars might crash because they don't receive instruction in time. With5G, this lag will be greatly lowed, making the cars safer.
5G could also be used to power the Intermit of Things (IOT), that is, a large online network that connects all things and people. Fast Intermit speeds will be the key to developing this technology. The IOT could be used in a lot of ways. For example, with IOT, your refrigerator could automatically place an order online for eggs when it finds that there are no eggs left inside.
As we know, there are differences between Western culture and Chinese culture. Let's look at some words about animals and plants. Most expressions in Chinese about the dog, for example," a homeless dog", " a mad dog", " a running dog" and "a dog catching a mouse", have bad meanings. In English, people use the dog to describe good actions. For example," you are a lucky dog" means you are a lucky person. Andevery dog has its day" means each person has good luck sometimes.
But in Western culture, " cat" is often used to describe a woman who is unkind. There are many other examples of how "cat" is used differently as well.
People think the rose stands for love, peace, courage and friendship. And the rose is the national flowers of England, America and many other countries.
We can learn about many differences in cultures by comparing how some words are used.
A. However, Chinese love cats very much. B. Westerners love roses very much, while Chinese like peonies (牡丹). C. We can see differences when we pay attention to the way words are used. D. We can see similarities when we pay attention to the way words are used. E. The words about plants and animals are used in good or bad ways in different cultures. F. The rose is regarded as a symbol of love in both China and some Western countries. G. But in Western countries, dogs are considered to be honest and good friends of humans. |
