Three students are talking about the New Year tradition of their own country.
Christina from Spain
On the last day of the year, the 31st of December, people wait till 12 p. m. Everybody must have 12 grapes to eat at midnight. At each sound of the clock, we must eat a grape. But we can't ever finish eating the grapes on time! Usually when people still have some grapes in their mouths, they look at each other and start to laugh. This tradition started in Spain long ago. One year, when there were a lot of grapes, the king of Spain decided to give grapes to everybody to eat on New Year's Eve.
Gordon from Britain
On New Year's Day in Britain, people have parties. At12 o' clock, the music stops, and we listen to the radio. On the radio we hear Big Ben, the famous clock in London. Then everybody sings a song about friendship and kisses their friends. We say "Happy New Year" to each other. It's lucky if a tall man with dark hair is the first person to come to the house in the New Year. So I go and visit as many friends as I can. They all give me a drink.
Angela from Brazil
In all cities in Brazil, we have a big party on New Year's Eve, especially in Rio deJaneiro. People in this city go to the beaches to watch fireworks(焰火). We put flowers in the sea and think about things we want for ourselves or others. We usually wear white clothes for good luck during the New Year.
Imagine that you're taking a trip from Asia to Europe by ship. Which way is the fastest? Before 1869, people didn't have too many choices. They had to take a long trip around the southern part of Africa. However, the opening of the Suez Canal (苏伊士运河)that year provided a shortcut (捷径). The canal is one of the most important parts of the global shipping network that all of us depend on.
The Suez Canal is 193.3 km long. It first opened in 1869. It took 10 years to build. Egypt manages the canal. In 2015, it finished an expansion (扩建)of the canal, making it able to hold the world's largest ships.
The ship Ever Given got caught in the canal on March 23 due to high winds, according to the ship's technical manager Bernhard Schulte Ship management. It was stuck there for six days until finally being freed on March 29. But during that short time, the ship blocked the canal, leaving at least 422 ships unable to pass. This accident showed us just how big of a role the canal plays in global trade.
The canal is a man-made waterway that connects the Mediterranean(地中海) to the Red Sea. It is a lifeline for the world's sea trade, as it cuts the travel distance from South Asia to Europe by about 7,000 km. Around 10 percent of the world's trade travels through the canal. Nearly $10 billion (about 65 billion yuan) worth of goods go through it every day, according to AP.
The canal is quite important for carrying oil. About 7 percent of the world's oil goes through the canal. The canal also ships goods like furniture (家具), clothing, and auto parts (汽车零件). Even daily goods like toilet paper and coffee pass through the canal. If the canal stops working for a long time, shortages of goods can make prices rise.
The accident showed how important and fragile (脆弱的)the canal is.
Good afternoon, and welcome to our country! I hope that your visit here will be a pleasant one. Today, I would like to draw your attention to a few of our laws.
The first one is drinking. Now, you may not buy wine in this country if you are under l 8 years of age, nor may your friends buy it for you.
Secondly, noise. Enjoy yourselves by all means, but please don't make unnecessary noise, especially at night. We ask you to respect other people who may wish to be quiet.
Thirdly, crossing the road. Be careful. The traffic moves on the left side of the road in this country. Use pedestrian crossings and do not take any chances when crossing the road.
My next point is about rubbish. It is considered impolite to drop rubbish in the street. When you have something to throw away, please put in your pocket and take it home, or put it in a dustbin. Finally, as regard smoking, it is against the law to buy cigarettes if you under l6 years of age. If you require any help, you should contact the police, who will be willing to help you.
Wish you a pleasant trip and enjoy yourselves!
Do you know how to be street smarts? Whether you're walking to the school or to the bus, hanging out in the playground, or riding your bike in your neighborhood, being street smarts helps you stay safe.
When you're walking home from school, a person in a car stops and asks you for directions. At the park, someone says he needs you to help look for his lost dog. These people may seem friendly, but they're strangers. But some strangers can be dangerous, and it's impossible to tell who's OK and who's not.
If a stranger approaches(靠近)you and asks for help, don't help. Right away, you should walk the other way. If you're not near a safe place, try any store or restaurant. If you feel you're in danger, call for help.
If a stranger stops his/her car and offers you ride, don't get in. It's also important to avoid a stranger's car completely. Don't agree to come closer to see a pet or to get a toy that's offered. What if a stranger comes to pick you up from school, dancing lessons, or the park? Don't get in the car. There are lots of ways to find out kids' names.
Kids need to follow the rules of street smarts all the time with every stranger, even if the situation seems fine. No one will think that you are silly.
A. Being street smarts means knowing how to keep yourself safe from strangers when you're alone or with other kids. B. Don't even give an answer. C. Most strangers aren't dangerous and wouldn't do anything to hurt kids. D. Even if the stranger knows your name, don't be fooled. E. If a stranger asks you to look in the car don't do it. F. All strangers are friendly |
My mom came to help me sleep every day when I was young. I don't remember when it started making me a little 1—my mom's hands pushing my hair that way. It made me uncomfortable, because they felt rough(粗糙的). One night, I 2her, "Don't do that anymore. Your hands are too rough!" She didn't say anything, 3she never did it anymore.
Years later, I'm not a little girl anymore. I miss my mother's 4at night. My mom is old but she still works for my family. It was late on Thanksgiving Eve. As I slept in my bedroom, a familiar hand ran across my face to push the hair from my head.
Taking my mom's hand, I told her how sorry I was for that5I shouted at her. But my mom had forgotten it. Thanks to my mother's caring hand, I fell asleep happily.
When I first entered Grade 9, all the thing got so hard for me. I used to get my homework done by 8 p.m. But I have to stay up 1midnight in Grade 9. I was quite stressed out. So I decided to make myself 2by jogging(慢跑).
At first I always felt tired. So I avoided thinking of the long way that I had to run. 3, I just thought about each step that I made. After I tried the way of running, to my surprise, things got 4. I started to feel the pleasure that running had brought me. Every single step became 5than before. The wind beside me was no longer laughing at me, but more like a(n) 6who came along with me. Also, everything in my life 7became better. For example, I felt more relaxed in class. At the same time, I finished homework more quickly. My teacher even 8me in class for my good job.
This is a very important lesson in my life. As I can see, Grade 9 is like a marathon(马拉松). So jogging is a good way to 9my stress. Every day is just a tiny 10. We can make our dream come true only by doing well in each step.
"I will risk my life for you." The sentence on the book cover of The Quality of Silence attracted me in the library. It was a touching confession (表白) of love. But as I started to read it, I found the book was not only about love, but courage and faith.
British author Rosamund Lupton wrote the booktells the story of Yasmin and her deaf daughter Ruby. They arrive in Alaska, US. Someone tells them that Ruby's father, Matt, (die) in an accident. Yasmin can't accept the fact of her( husband) death. She sets out into the cold winter (look) for him. But a lot of things happen. A storm closes in, someone follows them and sends them scary photos. But they don't give up and keep moving. (luck), they meet Matt again.
The author tells the story from Yasmin's view in (three) person and from Ruby's in first person. The author takes turns telling the story from the two views. It's such a great idea.Ruby's story, I feel like I'm in Alaska facing the same problems as them. I can't put down the book even for a second I want to know what happens next.
I (move) by Yasmin's spirit as well. I cried when I saw Matt and Yasmin together at last. (they) love was the reason that they both kept going.
