Long ago, a king was getting old and he had no sons to take over the throne(宝座). He loved to1plants, so he put up a notice: "Each boy can get a seed from me. In six2, the boy with the best plant would be the one to take over the throne."
Excitedly, huge crowds of boys came to the palace to get the seeds. Jun was one of them. After3home, Jun put the seed with rich black soil (土壤) into a good pot(罐).Day after day, Jun took good care of it. Chen was the4boy to say that his seed was spouting (发芽).Soon, everybody's seed sprouted except that of Jun. Other boys5Jun. When something was empty, they would say that it was" as empty as Jun's pot". Half a year passed and all the boys took their plants to the palace.
"My pot is empty!6should I do?" Jun said sadly to his parents.
"Take it to the king," his parents said. "You has done the best you could."
So, Jun carried his pot to the palace. When the king7Jun's pot,he said, "You brought me an empty pot?"
Jun said, "Your Majesty, I tried8best. I took very good care of it,9 it just didn't grow!"
To everyone's10, the king said aloud, "I don't know where you got your seeds. There is no way anything could grow from my seeds. I had cooked all of them." Then, he smiled at Jun…Jun took over the throne!
Known as "Super Dan", China's badminton player Lin Dan is one of the greatest badminton players in history. Four months ago, Lin announced(宣布) his retirement(退役) through his personal Weibo account. Here is what he wrote:
From 2000 to 2020, I've been through four Olympics and I never thought about stopping my career before. But now it's time for me to say goodbye. And it's actually so hard for me. At nearly 37 years old, my physical condition won't allow me to fight with my teammates anymore. In the future, I wish to spend more time with my family. I want to thank my country that nurtured (养育) me, my coaches (教练) who trained me, my family who always stayed with me, my fans who supported me and my opponents (对手) who encouraged me to be better: I wish to tell all of you who are having dreams to stay hungry. Go fight for your dreams. |
Fans were hoping to see Lin in the Tokyo Olympics, which has been put off to the summer of2021 because of COVID-19, but Lin couldn't make it.
It's just another day at school. You and your friend are playing in the classroom. Suddenly, your friend's nose starts to bleed(流血). What would you do? Would you do something to help your friend?
In daily life, we run into emergencies now and then. Nosebleeds are just one kind of emergency. But if you learn some basic first aid skills, you can help people during emergencies.
The second Saturday of September is World First Aid Day. First aid, as its name tells us, means the first steps you can take to care for someone who gets hurt. It includes keeping him safe and staying calm. It also includes getting help by telling other people or calling 120.
Every year in China, 3.2 million people die in emergencies. That's an average(平均数) of six people per minute. Doctors say that the first 10 minutes after an accident can make the difference between life and death. This is why it's important for us to learn first aid.
CPR(心肺复苏术) is one of the most useful first aid skills. It can help people who suffer cardiac arrest(心脏骤停). But if you want to perform CPR, you need to learn how to do it properly. You can take courses offered by the Red Cross Society or some hospitals.
Today's children grow up with different kinds of electronic devices (电子设备) around them. It seems that they can't live in a world without smart phones, tablets(平板电脑) and the Internet. According to a report, 42% of American children under 8 have their own tablets. They usually spend more than 2 hours a day in front of the screens.
What do parents think of electronic devices?
Electronic devices help kids learn in a new way. There are lots of educational apps and kids can learn a lot from them. —Frank |
Electronic devices make learning fun. With many videos and games, kids will be more interested in learning. —Maggie |
My child is getting fat because he spends too much time on the computer. And he has sleep problems because of some computer games. —Rose |
Some electronic devices make kids lose themselves. As a result, they don't want to do out-door activities or talk with people around them. —Henry |
It is important to make rules to limit(限制) your children's screen time. The following rules can be helpful.
No electronic devices during family meals.
No electronics use during family fun nights.
No screen time in cars.
No screens in bedrooms.
Every week, choose one night to be screen-free(无屏幕). It could be good for children's physical and emotional (情绪的) health. Also, it can improve family's relationships.
A company called SkyDrive showed its new flying car, the SD-03. The small car could stay about1 to 2 meters above the ground, and fly around for 4 minutes with a driver on board.
They hope that flying cars will be used for short trips in cities in the future. Flying cars can save time and help reach places easily.
With lots of cars flying around, people need new ways to help control the traffic in the air. And it is too difficult for people to control in real time.
Safety is another problem. If flying cars fall from the sky, it will hurt not just the people in the car, but people on the ground, too.
Cars and airplanes had lots of problems at first, too.
Tomohiro Fukuzawa, the CEO of the company, wants the flying cars to be able to fly two people on trips of up to 5 kilometers by 2023. By 2050, he hopes people will be able to fly anywhere inside flying cars in just 10 minutes. He said, "".

A study in Botswana, Africa shows that painting eyes on the backsides of cows may help protect (they) from large predators(肉食动物) like lions. Protecting cows could also help protect the lions — from angry farmers. Lions eat farm animals. So farmers kill lions (protect) their farm animals.
Researchers from the University of New South Wales spent four years (study) what would happen if they painted pictures of eyes on the backsides of cows. They (work) with over 2,000 cows on 14 different farms in the Okavango area. They put the cows three different groups. They painted large eyes on the backsides of one group of cows. The (two) group got simple Xs. The final group got nothing.
The results were fantastic. The eyes worked (excellent). Of the 683 cows with eyes painted on them, none were killed in the four (year). Cows with nothing on their backsides didn't do so well. 15 of the 835 unpainted cows were killed. They were surprised to learn that even Xs seemed to give cows some protection. Only 4 of the 543 cows with Xs were killed.
However, the researchers aren't sure whether the eyes would work so well when all of the cows have them. Still, for now, it seems like a (practice) way to protect cows in the area.
