Betty and I are best friends. Our birthdays are on the same day, so every year we have a birthday party together. But this year, we had a costume (服装) party instead.
While we were writing the invitations, my mum came in and asked, "Why not invite John?" John had been in our class for only a few months, but he was already getting better grades in math than anyone else in class. I wrinkled(皱着) my nose, "Mum, he wears the same pants to school every day. How could he even afford a costume?" Mum said nothing. The next day, mum gave me an envelope(信封) with a shopping ticket in it. "I thought it would be nice for you to give this to John." Mum said. But how? We didn't want to make John embarrassed. We discussed it for a long time. Finally, Betty and I had a good idea.
On the day of our party, kids arrived, dressed differently. John arrived, in an old sheet, but still in the same brown pants as usual. We danced, ate snacks and played games in groups. Before eating the birthday cake, Betty said in a loud voice, "Now it's time for the great prize game. It's the following riddle(谜语)……" It was a math game. None of us was surprised when John came up with the right answer first and walked off with the envelope.
Everything went on well as we planned. John wore a new pair of pants and a new shirt the next week. He felt happy. So did we.
When we help others, we need to find a proper way, or we may hurt them in another way.

As a young boy, I enjoyed listening to my father telling his childhood stories. The picture of him and his friends climbing to the top of a tree to look at a bird's nest(巢)stayed in my mind for quite a while. I dreamed of looking at a bird's nest that had eggs or small baby birds inside like my father did when he was a boy.
But that was almost impossible.
First, youngsters today are not allowed to climb trees. People think it's too dangerous. Second, we don't have so many birds' nests around anymore.
However, early one spring day, my dream came true.
It was a Saturday morning. My dad's best friend, who I call Uncle Ben, invited us to visit his business. He sold used cars at his shop outside the city. It was a large parking lot.
Uncle Ben led us through the parking lot, pointing out all kinds of different cars. As we walked across the lot, we suddenly found something unusual—a bird's nest on the back wheel of a car!
I was excited to be so close. I looked at the nest in amazement. It was real—a real bird's nest with four eggs sitting inside.
Uncle Ben took a look at the eggs. He said it was a robin's nest. To protect the nest from being destroyed (破坏),he suggested that we move it to a tree beside the parking lot. We all hoped that the robin would find her new home and her baby birds.
Green is an important color in nature. It is the color of grass and the leaves on trees. It is also the color of most growing plants.
Sometimes, the word "green" means young, fresh and growing. For example, a greenborn is someone who has no experience. In the 15th century, a greenborn was a young cow or an ox whose borns (角) had not yet developed. A century later, a greenborn was a soldier who had no experience in war. By the 18th century, a greenborn had the meaning it has today—a person who is new in a job.
Someone who is good at growing plants is said to have a green thumb(大拇指). The expression comes from the early 20th century. A person with a green thumb can make plants grow quickly and well. The Green Revolution(绿色革命) is the name given some years ago to the development of new kinds of rice and other grains. It was the result of hard work by agricultural 农业的scientists who had green thumbs.
Green is also the color used to describe the powerful feeling. Jealousy(嫉妒). The green eyed monster is not a dangerous animal from outer space. It is an expression used about 400 years ago by the British writer William Shakespeare in his play "Othello". It describes the unpleasant feeling when someone has something he wants.
In most places in the world, a green light is a signal(信号) to move ahead. In everyday speech, a green light means approval(赞成) to continue with a project.

I decided to meet my sponsored(被资助的) child, 12-year-old Natacha Etienne. She survived(幸存) the earthquake in Haiti. After a two-hour drive, I found myself in a beautiful place w Natacha's family live.
When I first saw Natacha, waiting in her best clothes, I felt like giving her a hug , but I d . She had never seen me b. With half of the villagers gathering to look at me, Natacha stood back, silent and shy.
When I pulled out photos, hand-written messages and drawings I'd received from Natacha, her shyness was gone and she began to talk to me. Her parents greeted me with w hugs and nervous smiles.
Her parents thanked me repeatedly for coming. Her father opened some drinks, and we drank and t. I learnt that their only plan was to get all their eight children educated, s they could get a chance to leave Haiti. "You are like
a mother for Natacha," they said. "You pay for her education and we are really thankful to you."
I took part in the sponsor activity, hoping it could help children like Natacha have a c to go to school. I believe my little contribution (捐助) will c their lives. Now I realize that writing letters and sending photos are of great importance to Natacha, because they are all small g sent with great love.
We all just have one life. What makes you happy? Is it something as simple as getting a new toy or doing well on an exam? Or is it something more meaningful than that?
A happy life means forgetting. ①There are quite a few unhappy things that happen to us. They make us upset, worried, jealous(嫉妒的) and angry. Sometimes they trouble us a lot. What should we do? Just forget them! Throw the terrible things away and leave the happy ones in your heart.
A happy life means giving. Give up a seat to an old person on a crowded bus. It's difficult to give up something of your own, but if you share things with those in need, you can feel happier. So, just learn to give. Give a hand to someone in trouble. Giving will bring happiness and pleasure.
A happy life also means doing. Never put off until tomorrow what you can do today. ②If you have a plan, carry it out straight away! A sense of pride and happiness will make you happy.
A happy life isn't just about playing. We all know that, "All work and no play makes Jack a silly boy". But if we spend too much time playing then we become "dull(迟钝的) boys", too.
These are just the seeds(种子) of happiness. You must water and care for them continually until they flower. Then your life will be happy.
Is your life happy? If it is not, you should take actions and make your life happy.
